During the regular season I will be more topical.

I was a huge Braves at the time, and Andruw was the most hyped Braves prospect that I had ever seen make the majors. When he hit those two homers, I honestly thought he might end up being one of the all-time greats. He obviously had a great career, but he was never in the discussion as one of the best players in the league, and with the exception of that one season in which he binked 51 HRs, he wasn't even in the discussion for a single season MVP award.

It's weird to say that a HOF player had a disappointing career, but compared to my expectations when he arrived, I was a little disappointed.

thats the kicker with expectations, gonna be disappointed immeasurably and have your day ruined.

Back in the day when players didn't break their ankle celebrating between 1sr and 2nd base. 😊ldmanshakingfistatclouds:

I remember being super excited for the Yankees to finally (hey I was 13) make the World Series. Then game 1 got rained out and it seemed like an eternity waiting for the next night. And then when Jones hit 2 homers and the Braves demolished the Yankees it felt like a ruined Christmas.

At age 29, Jones had 342 home runs and 9 gold gloves and was coming off 92 home runs in 2 years. To only have 92 home runs in his 30's is a massive underachievement. And with no major injuries either. He just got fat and lazy it seems.

Makes you kind of respect people who do roids in their 30s and incorporate salads into their diet.

I've never had any issue with the players who did steroids prior to league testing. When the league wasn't testing, they were basically signalling that they were okay with it. To witch hunt those players afterwards has always been absurd.

As I recall from living in Atlanta at the time, he was truly a pioneer in the early Instagram days of β€œsliding into the DM’s.”

Once he was freshly retired, and still relevant, he’d follow local models, thirst traps, and club promoters in the ATL area. With, apparently, varying degrees of success.

A legend before his time.

Chipper was probably in the same boat. He divorced his first wife after having an affair with a local Hooters waitress. And after he retired, he left his second wife for a Playboy model.

best thing to ever come out of baseball was the "i will not call a grown man chipper"

Ah, the old Tiger Woods move. I'd say he's made the right choice. Legend.

Pretty big delta between Hooters and Perkins

I can't overstate the number of Southern baseball players I knew as a teenager who more or less had exactly the same personality as Chipper. He represents an archetype that is very familiar to me.

With the ABS counting a pitch as a strike if "any" part of the ball touches the zone, won't this lead to umpires calling more strikes on close pitches, thus giving pitchers and advantage??

I mean umpires are going to try to adjust ......... It would seem that on borderline pitches leaning towards a strike call would become a natural response.

very good point

i think a big way to think of it is every time people talk about widening the net in hockey, they point out that there are 6.3 goals per game but 1.7 hits of the post or crossbar - so simply expanding the net by an inch would increase the amount of goals dramatically - probably even more so than that data implies, because it'd mean bigger holes for players to target so instead of trying to tuck the puck in a gap in the pads, they now have more wide open space to target - as let's be clear, when they hit the post, that's the sign of a miss that missed closely not that they targeted that

i think the best route is under the new interpretation, to shrink the strike zone by half a baseball or so - but maybe this is just fancy play syndrome?

If I binked the powerball, I’d visit every ballpark.

Big enough powerball, I’d have a small entourage with me.

Send PM to apply for future possible entourage.

Goal post hits could be misleading though. Technically they are hitting something the goalie doesn't need to cover, so his positioning would be different if the net was an inch bigger. Goalies have spent thousands of hours in an exact goal, so they know exactly what they're covering and not covering instinctively to some extent.

Imagine if Wemby was a Hockey Goalie.

Sherzer back with the Jays for 1 more year!

Sherzer back with the Jays for 1 more year!

Maybe they also see his presence alone being helpful, and maybe some potential to move into coaching???

3M seems like nothing though. Kind of surprised he signed for that. One might think he could get 5 to 8M for one year from a few teams.

Maybe there are some bonuses, or maybe he just wants to be with the Jays again.
