Going for a round of vaccines today. We old guys aren't taking any chances.

straight people with the cultural appropriation from the gays bugs me too Phatty
Sort of interesting. I looked up the definition of handicap and the usage pertaining to disability is marked offensive and hidden.

To be charitable, this is the google answer, stolen from real dictionaries. I looked at two of those, which mentioned it could be considered offensive. And they probably should warn you of that. Google probably just does this by default.
The term originated with a game called hand in cap, which involved something similar to sports handicapping.
Few people using it for disabilities know that though and I'm still not sure why that would be offensive.
Starting a football game with -7 points and having one leg are both going to make things harder, but I don't see any other negative implications. Like, I don't see either the players or the amputee as morally inferior.
As Carlin said, it's nothing to be ashamed of. Maybe some people don't get that you can have traits that are negative but not shameful.
Agreed that heterosexual using "partner" for husband/wife bf/gf is very annoying. It's like saying you had dinner with your parent instead of your dad. Which might be next.
partner is a good strategic choice when it's necessary to mention that person but don't wish to reveal the extent of the relationship - primarily used by women who were unsure of whether or not they'd get the job if it were known they were married (and thus about to pop out a baby)
Fall thread? Yeah it is still officially fall but DAMN! It is pre winter here! We had lotsa snow (6-7 inches) right after Thanksgiving and then a few more inches after that. And it is really cold (single digits) so nothing has even thought about melting. It's not even winter yet and we have already had more winter than last year which was extremely mild.
But it's Friday! Just had some delicious Chinese food as I was really jonesing for it and hadn't had any in quite some time. Went with the Empress Chicken which was awesome.
Anyway stay warm out there unless you are one of those lucky bastards who lives in a decent climate. Someday I wil be with you! Winter sucks.
Winter does indeed suck, though much milder here than my midwest days.

Yesterday, saw an envelope from the company that installed my solar. Small mom & pop (literally) company. About card-sized, figured it was holiday greetings.
Turns out, it was a notice that the company is being shut down due to the loss of Matt (dad/chief engineer). Looking into it, he was in a small plane crash in September at one of our small airports. Both people in the plane were killed, so I'm guessing he was taking flying lessons.
Got to know him a little during the job. Ex-military, I believe he said he was a paratrooper in the army. Really geeked about his work, too. One time, I was dropping a check off at the house (they ran the company out of that), and he was showing me their bus.
He and Jennifer had a bunch (six?) of kids, so he converted an old Greyhound into their cruiser. Still diesel for the engine, but had panels on the top, and one of the luggage compartments was full of batteries.
So, when they got to the campground, they had electricity even when it was a "rustic" setting. He was quite (justifiably) proud of that machine. Kind of an E-MaddenCruiser.

Mid-morning, put the old washer out on the curb. Posted a notice on craiglist's free area that someone could come get it. Told them how it didn't spin out right any more, but if they could fix or use for parts, there it is.
Not sure when someone took it. Looked out and noticed it was gone early afternoon.
Kind of a up-and-down day. Bar poker this evening, so I'll get out of the house a little at least.
'handicap' historically implies measurement against something else
who sets that standard and what is the community agreement?
If you are measuring two horses, you are measuring them against each other.
If you measure them racing a mile and a quarter ten times, and horse A is faster than Horse B by 3 seconds ten times, then the community agreement would be that horse A was 3 seconds faster in the mile and a quarter.

only hoping to inspire respectful conversation, not insight a riot
this three post quote succintly emphasis my point
outside of athletes, identifying humans as having a 'handicap' begs the question: compared to what arbitrary metric?
Some day Stevie Wonder is gonna die, and suddenly the world will remember what a musical genius he is. For about a week or two, then he'll go back to being forgotten.
And yet everybody has all the time and attention in the world to glorify and obsess over the crap that passes as pop music now.
The subject of musical masterminds came up in another thread, and Stevie was the first guy I thought of as an authentic one.
I've listen to some podcasts about him and he was very good at things like business and production and organizing big projects with lots of performers. He had, and used creative carte Blanche and some of the most favorable deals with labels by the time he was 21.
He should be better appreciated, but I still hear his stuff in casinos from time to time and he was a mega star in his day, so that's cool.

Perhaps your conundrum might yield to Bayesian analysis.
Redeyes' posts all read like double crostic clues or something. I got no idea what's going on.
I was trying to say that I don't believe problems can be solved by re-naming them. There could be a wholly valid discussion as to what constitutes a problem in the first place, but I would be singularly unfit to participate in it.

apologies if sometimes the lc sandbox fills up with redeye cat scat
my obscure point about the use of 'handicap' in regard to providing accommodation for other beings is, as identified by Mack, a word logically originating in wagering environments.
the hazard of applying similar terms to sentences describing parking or otherwise accessing a front door implies humans are being measured against each other while just out there trying to survive and thrive
hope that clears things up
for the record no vitrol intended or seemingly an intrepretion as such
So far, I've watched A Chrstmas Carol (1938), A Christmas Carol (1951) and The Long Kiss Goodnight.
Good times.
Watched A Christmas Carol (1938) yesterday and it was awesome. Hadn't seen it in forever and remembered being terrified of Marleys Ghost when I was a little kid. I think it was the chains?

Walked in and it just reminded me of Goodfellas.

Strange, the brewery where we have the bar poker league has the same santa hat chair covers.
How do you NOT dance to Earth, Wind, and Fire??
So, my life as a pet sitter continues. My friend calls today to tell me he's in the hospital after having three mini-strokes and is being transferred to Boston in the morning. Talk to his wife who asked me to come tomorrow night, but his daughter said they have to go tonight to Boston so they would be there in the morning. Well, I'm here tonight with the dog and probably will be for a couple more days.

And I found out yesterday that my friend and colleague died on Monday. He just retired in June. He had been teaching throughout getting chemo the last couple years. He was a great guy and teacher.
Two other friends and colleagues who retired two years ago both diagnosed with cancer. One has begun to recover, but it doesn't look good for the other.
As my grandfather used to tell me, "Getting old is a bitch."
