2024 World Series of Poker May 28th to July 17th ***No Spoilers***
The 2024 WSOP will take place at Horseshoe Las Vegas and Paris Las Vegas from May 28 to July 17, 2024, with the Main Event running from July 3 to July 17. The Main Event – poker’s undisputed freezeout world championship – will have four starting days, beginning on Wednesday, July 3. Players may also register directly on Day 2.
People are really bad at them. I'm actually amazed at how bad a lot of regs in Vegas are at them considering they play them all the time.
I'd say that is the understatement of the year ... people are HORRIBLE at them, honestly can't count the number of times i get my money in with a stone cold lock for one side and a good draw on the other, while 2 other guys are having one pair or just draws on both sides.
the announcement for the wsop tourney for it just made my day !!!
They mentioned 700 tables available this year, anyone remember what it was last year? Thought it was closer to 600.
I don’t know what it was but I just read this in an article about event #62:
“The PokerNews DeepStack Championship will take place in a new and vibrant location near the Horseshoe poker room. Organizers are committed to creating an immersive experience that goes beyond the felt, elevating the overall atmosphere for players.”
I'm confused, it looks like 3 flights (1A, 1B, 1C) for Colossus on Fri 28-Sun 30, when does the tournament expect to finish? Or is it a 3 day tournament ending Sunday?

Colossus would end on Tuesday, 2 days after the final day 1.
Day 1A, 1B, 1C (Day 1 of tournament)

Day 3

An entire game of them tends to play slow but I kinda like the idea for a tournament.
Anything that hasn't been solved and studied to death Is worth trying.
What is the SPR on the flop for a typical bomb pot? My impression from the vlogs I’ve seen is that everyone is often putting in like $50 off a 1k stack, which yields an SPR of ~2. Given this, 4 people getting all-in given you have 2 boards and so many PLO hands have so much equity doesn’t seem unreasonable.
But this just strikes me as a terrible tournament game unless you’re just trying to play something close to a flip-and-go. You’re just forced to put in so much of your stack with a random hand all the time. If you get down to like 3-4x the ante, you’re basically just forced to go all-in with anything. (BTW, if you have less than the ante, are you eligible to win to whole ante, or is it split into side pots?)
And wasn’t the whole point of adopting big blind ante that hands where everyone had to put in money just delayed the game too much?
^^old man shaking his fists at clouds?

Depends.
The 1/2 plo games in Vegas generally do 20 dollars per player but I've occasionally seen 10 or 15.
The 5/5 games are 25 or 50.
I've definitely been in games where the spr is 2:1. Those games tend to be a lot of people who short stack and play nitty so they fold too much in them even though they dont need a ton of equity to continue..
Then there are deep stacked games where the spr is anywhere from 10 or 20 to 1 and people go way overboard trying to protect one board where they can't possibly win the other board.
While individually in cash games double board bomb pot hands do take longer, tournament hands tend to take longer than cash hands with all of the nonsensical tanking. In double board bomb pots people are going to get eliminated faster than in traditional tournaments so overall the tournaments should go pretty quickly.
You're right people will be forced to gamble. And this format will attract people who like to gamble. I fail to see how that's a bad thing.
If you get down to 3 BB in a normal tournament you're often forced to just go all in with whatever so I don't see this as being much different except it will be on the flop rather than prefop.
I mean I would agree the shallower people are the less interesting this format of poker is,but that's the same for all forms of big bet poker.
I mean we've seen tournaments where the real pay jumps are determined by 8 big blind poker k8 offsuit vs ace 3 offsuit type stuff preflop. It's not like there's exactly a ton of room for play at the end of tournaments as it is. That's not remotely interesting.
As it happens, I already had this in my files.
I've played one bomb pot tourney and thought it was a bit ****
Not opposed to trying something new at wsop though

Not sure where that would be but potentially could be inside the Jubilee Theater? Maybe there's no show running there currently?
Wow, I didn’t imagine people would be so sensitive about my skepticism toward bomb pot tournaments. I had never heard of these, but if they have actually been successfully run in other places in the past, then of course it’s reasonable for the WSOP to try it as well.
It’s still part of a worrying trend to me that so many of the new innovations in poker have made the game less friendly to new players (in the sense that they have a tendency to force players to gamble more money than they are comfortable with and frequently lose it very quickly).

fwiw i'm not even saying it will be a success or it's a great idea but it's worth trying. there's really only one way to find out how good of an idea it really is and that's to do it.
What innovations are you referring to specifically?
Nobody is forced to gamble more than they're comfortable with. There are plenty of low gamble/no gamble games out there.
But it's pretty clear gambling type innovations have happened bc some people actually want to gamble and not be sliced up by tanking gto pros regurgitating solver outputs.
I'm a big fan of trying new things in poker that could be fun, involve people actually gambling, and having to figure things out on their own.
lets make this short:
doing a bomb pot tourney at wsop is a no brainer ... the game picks up popularity in cash games, so give the people what they want - easy.
and i'm gonna win it, so pls pls all you guys participate ... bigger pricepool ;-)
Yes but it’s never a good time to whine
WSOP is an event on West Coast, just like any event of this ilk, comes on later on East Coast
You don’t have to watch it live btw. And no one will spoil the result of a 10K stud or whatever
Coverage was A+ outstanding last year, essentially the 50K PPC and Main Event. Off the hook good
Agree on little B lol
I've decided that I'm gonna take a step forward in maturity and NOT whine this year about PokerGo.
Last summer I found out what it is and for me to continue to complain is pointless and stupid.
I made my thoughts known last year, and I know what I am going to be getting into when I sign up again in late May.
Look at me . . . I'm growing.
I'll be in Vegas from June 19th thru July 2nd, mostly playing at Caesar's, Bellagio, and Horseshoe,
and Golden Nugget on the Saturdays to soak in the real degeneracy of Fremont st
No tournaments, just gonna wake up watch the Euro Cup games, then play cash games nursing a strong buzz all day long,
meeting people from around the world, I'll be the guy wearing the Bear's Ditka jersey every few days
wondering how I'm considered too TAGgy back home and feel like a borderline maniac at 1-3 in Vegas
There are worse ways to spend 2 weeks.
I’m not sure, I guess I’ve just never heard of a game where every hand was a double board bomb pot. Honestly, my experience with these is mostly just waltching them as occassional gimmicks in games played by poker vloggers where it seems like you have four people all-in every bomb pot. So it seems like this would be a very fast tournament to say the least.
There was a weekly PLO tourney at my room back in Chicago a few years ago
The minute I saw they were starting it, I joked, "just fold the first two orbits and you'll find yourself heads up and get paid"
They only held the tourney 3 times before cancelling it.
I'm told PLO is a real game and not bingo, but in the Chicago area, at the 1-2 level well over half the pots are multiway all ins PRE.
I've sat in the game a few times as a curiosity and it's a joke.
I've been taught and shamed by people here about my PLO views, including the great Greg Raymer himself, and I have come to accept that when you get to the higher stakes, it actually becomes a game. I'll never have the money or cohones to play in a high stakes PLO game. As Clint Eastwood taught us, "a man has to know his limits"
I would LOVE to watch a PLO double board bomb pot tourney, it would just be hysterical and fascinating

In addition to bomb pots, you have things like mandatory straddles/restraddle, 27 game, stand up game, 5 card PLO, etc. All these thinks force people to gamble above the normal stakes of the game.
I understand why people who have been playing NLHE forever would want to add these things, because it’s reasonable for them to feel like NLHE has become boring and “solved”.
But these things are also going to be very intimidating to new players who are just starting to dip their toes into the poker waters and only want to risk their money slowly while they are learning.
It seems like the the poker economy has become entirely oriented toward trying to ge whales to throw as much money into the pot as fast as possible instead of growing the game from the ground up.
I love the WSOP, and think it is one of the few organizations that has been pretty consistent in keeping a good balance between appealing to casual and professional players. It’s also been great at continuing to promote poker variants that have died out allmost everywhere else (despite the fact that many of these variants are hitting attendance records as consistently as NLHE). I’d just hate to see this balance upset.
Does it say anywhere on the chart what games will be at which location?

Isn't that actually the exact opposite of what short deck and PLO offer? Don't equities run a lot tighter in those variants? A lot of the gimmicky variants seem designed to cater to the weaker players by being more gamble-oriented. I thought the whole reason why short deck became a thing for a while is because the game is friendlier for weaker players since the edges are tighter.
I also think your post is off the mark when the WSOP has steadily been lowering its buy-ins to cater to new/rec players. If I'm not mistaken, they didn't have any events below the $1k-1.5k price point in the 90s/00s. Now the schedule is loaded with stuff in the $600 range. I feel like that's a good example of "growing the game from the ground up" by offering players a ramp into the higher buy-ins. If anything, WSOP has become too casual and rec-friendly. It's a "prestigious" series where you can go play a $600 bracelet event with 30 minute levels.
I am NOT a tourney guy, so please, hold back the snark.
The Salute to Warriors $500 tourney is something I would like to do seeing as my son has joined the Army National Guard.
Plus, a WSOP tourney is certainly a bucket list item for me.
how can I register without having to deal with the stories we hear of hours long lines?
I'll be in Vegas a full week before it starts, so I should be able to target the best time.
Any help would be appreciated.
Oh, and your best Cliffs Notes for making it to Day 2?
