VIEW: People are too dependent on solvers
People are putting in a lot of work with solvers but aren’t grasping the rationale behind the solver recommendations. It seems everyone makes a play because it’s “solver approved” or “what the solver says” instead of considering WHY the solver says that.
This severely limits people as it is impossible to memorize every solver approved play you might encounter, but understanding the rationale for why the solver recommends it affords you the flexibility and adaptability necessary for a winning session.
They made announcement.
.....and AlanBostick loses his mind because they are not just keeping the 'status quo' 😡.............
Depending on how long you’ve played poker, phones were banned from the table for a bit
Yeah, I am off but Dr Meh wants freaking 'jamming software;, lol. You guys are brilliant.
Using your phone briefly while not in a hand with it in clear view of the the entire table accommodates the majority of people, including the ones whining about 'what about my music man BS'. Ban them completely then for all I care, as I haven't played tourneys in a long while. I am just tired of all of the cheating in poker and poker player's laissez faire attitude about it as if it is never going to affect
Uhhh that was your takeaway? Yikes. I was saying jamming would be preferential to your dopey idea. That’s not the same as saying that’s what I want.
I just want rules in place and for them to actually enforce them.
Feel like you should be able to do whatever you want away from the table. Besides a 10 minute session isn't gonna help much anyway
Dumbasses at the table is always a good thing
"No electronics at the table" will drive off recs. That's the biggest reason you'll see opposition to that, not "everyone who opposes it must be cheating" or some such nonsense.
Jammers are illegal under federal regulations, so that's simply off the table.

I agree, but I think this would mostly apply to cash games. I don't think recs would be driven off by it for tourneys though. or at least not at a meaningful rate. A no electronic assistance/solver rule with strong punishment and requiring any electric use to be above the table in clear view of the dealer and other players would be a good compromise imo.
No electronic devices while your hand is live. How about that?
I agree
Reading this gave me a thought. Most players use the casino wifi. Maybe the IT people at the casino could set up the wifi so it blocks the websites of the solvers? Just like they could block your access to porn sites and such, they could block access to solver sites. That way the players couldn't access those sites to run or look up a spot they are about to be in? Sure, they could just stick to their 4G data connections, but it might help a bit.

Who cares about the solver sites, but blocking the porn sites will definitely drive off the rec players!
Pacemakers? Insulin pumps?
Fitbits? Smart watches?
MP3 players? Portable CD players?
Noise-canceling headphones? Any headphones or earbuds?
Car keys?
Heh.
No smartwatches. Nothing else on your list is relevant to using computer or an outside party assistance for the play of an ongoing hand. That means, in addition to no smartwatches, no cellphones, notebooks, or iPads, and a single player to a hand. It's not hard to enforce by any means, and is the rule where I do most of my live play. When you're out of a hand and before you've been dealt the next one, do what you like.
It will get harder in the future. Brain-computer interfaces. More powerful handheld devices and faster solvers. More miniaturization. More gray areas.
Blocking a site isn’t a good solution, it’s not that difficult to make a solver especially with AI coding assistance now. If you read a couple whitepapers you dont even really need to know how to code you can just instruct Copilot or Replit Ghostwriter to make a solver based on whats in the whitepaper.
Banning devices works, I don’t actually think brain computer interfaces will ever actually work, it seems like a scam for private investment dollars more than anything.
A few years after the iPhone came out there was a team that got caught using one with a custom app to beat Roulette by predicting which quadrant the ball would land in through the camera. Its not hard to make an app that can look at your hole cards and the flop through the camera and discreetly message you a solution, I could make a working prototype in a month or two. Idk why phones are allowed at the table when they’re banned at pit games.
The bigger reason to ban phones is that they undoubtedly could be modified to catch the value of cards from dealers who are holding the deck fairly high or at an angle.

They're decades off from being relevant to live poker, but are already in biomedical use, improving for those who have lost function to injury or disease hearing, vision, use of hands, arms, and legs, facial muscles needed for verbal communication, seizure susceptibility, etc.
Here's a brief video of an example of a man paralyzed for over a decade getting restoration of some walking ability from a brain-spinal interface:
what % is the probability of getting dq'd? need to calculate minimum solver use frequency

Do you know how many products go through clinical trials and never make it to market?
have the phone at an angle and low enough that the camera picks up images of the card as they're pitched
I thought most room don't allow you to actually just have your phone sitting on the table.
Even if you could, it would look super sus to set your phone up in that way.
I also wonder how you would retrieve the information without also looking sus.
