Saw the flooding happening in Omaha and Iowa. Maybe Council Bluffs Casino has a hotel? Maybe make a little scratch waiting out the rain/floods?

But serially, GL SPC!

Dafuq did DM come from? No movement from his dot for three days, and suddenly he's in Omaha. I'm guessing his GPS has been malfunctioning? Before his small series of hits 3 days ago, he had no hits for four days before that.

DM has had digestive issues for a while and has not been on the bike. He scratched, rented a car and drove to omaha. If you look at his individual tracker you can see the massive gap. He will be changed to white to reflect this.

High temps spoda be significantly lower and SPC is feeling great with the new saddle and expects to hit iowa before stopping today.

LOL. It all makes sense now. Sorry to hear he hasn't been feeling well, but that's an odd way to make up for lost bike time.

GL to SPC. If she can make it to the East side of Council Bluffs, she'll be past most of the terrain in Iowa, though motels start getting thinner on the ground once she leaves the metro area. Still better than Nebraska IRT services though.

Source: I used to live in Omaha and drove across Iowa way too many times.

Wish they used google maps on the tracker.

Can't tell from this if they're going through Shelby, IA. Mayabe 45 min E of CB. If they do, there's a place called the Corn Crib restaurant where SPC can really fuel up. What you'd expect, huge portions of good midwestern food. I think I remember there being a convenience store for choco milk too. Cheapo motel right across the street.

To answer AzOther1's question, there are a number of motels near the casino, of varying quality. The Super 8 wasn't great when I was there in March/ However, it appears the route takes her quite a way south of that area.

If she pops up there, and likes wings, there's an outpost of Quaker Steak & Lube just in the area too. Great wings (Golden Garlic FTW).

This was billed as a gravel ride linking bikepaths. It is far from that. A significant chunk of the guys in white are skipping big sections of the hard stuff.
I believe db is pretty much sticking to main roads "near" the route at this point. One guy way in the back has gotten lost and rescued 2x by ranchers and has been heavily scolded and told not to go so far off course.

Looks like they'll be passing about 2 miles south of Shelby, on Tamarak avenue between Minden and Avoca.

LOL at the getting lost and rescued in this day and age, but the route looks like that would happen a ton without GPS.

I totally get the "Imma switch to sport mode and switch to better roads to miss the ridic sections" thinking, but the "I'm going to just skip Nebraska entirely" decision seems odd, even with having been sick. Wants to do as much as possible but only has so much vacation time?

Golddog. The designers have not made any sections of the route publicly accessible (which is beyond silly) or I would post them up here. Here is a portion of spcs spreadsheet showing iowa info.

Based on the info I have seen from their group chat: My guess is that 1. coming from sea level and climbing big mountain passes sux ass. 2. Nebraska is hot and miserable. 3 a huge slug of the trail in nebraska is slow going and really rough ride. 4 its much easier to rent a car and skip the suck. 5. catching up to your buddies is fun.

In these big distance events even on roads generally 1/3+ of the field scratches. This being much harder than anyone expected it looks half have dropped and all but 1 just want to keep going but lower the difficulty levels via support or skipping the suck.

So this vid is going east-to-west, but it summarizes crossing Iowa in 48 seconds, and it's pretty much the same the other way, just switch out the timing of the town names.

Over 2K miles and into Iowa. Way to go, SPC!

Flooding in Council Bluffs or something? Some weird routing going on.

@squid: The rivers in Western and Central Iowa generally run NW -> SE. Thus, SPC will be cutting across their river valleys.

More hilly than most people's notion of Iowa. I don't think it's anything killer for SPC. Kinda gently rolling hills, just more than expected if one's never been through.

I-80 is a rough delineator for the real flat prairie cornfields from most peoples' notions. Once she crosses that to the north, should be pretty level til she gets close to the Mississippi.

If she happens upon a Maid-Rite and is a meat eater, that's a decent FF place. Kinda of an IA tradition, they are loose meat instead of a burger patty (with seasonings etc).

Don't have other ideas for the places you listed. Most of my travels from my days in DSM were west or north, and the latter were just drive-throughs.

The rerouting is an absolute shitshow and evidently very confusing. SPC has gone through standing water over 1.5 feet deep and is dealing with all kinds of debris from the storm as well. Some of the reroute choices are questionable at best. One forced an I80 crossing that was quite dangerous. She had to double back one section that was not passable

hail from yesteday in omaha WTF!

@ golddog the mother of my daughter is from Iowa and is a MASSIVE fan of Maid-Rite

Never cared for Maid-Rite. Runza for life!

SPCs forced bike maintaniance stop in norfolk cost a lot of riding hours. The severe storm delayed her departure another 4 hours. She knew it would be a long day to make up for this. She put in a 22 hour effort and covered 185 slow frustrating miles and managed to make up distance and lost time. Today is overcast and mild temps so she has slept in and will be on the road shortly. She hopes to put in a big day today if the weather cooperates

GL to her. Insane effort yesterday and the night before.

Go SPC! Seems like she just went through Atlantic/

From the "Things which please me more than they should" department: saw an "Adopt a Shelter Pet" license plate this morning, the last three characters of which were "WUF"

Managed to tweak my back reaching for the shampoo yesterday. Getting old is ridic! Currently working on relaxing the muscles via drinking a ****load of Scotch, and even more in awe of the folks in SPC's race, most of whom are also old as ****.

Rage-quit mid-session today after I got slow-rolled in a big pot. At least I am finally able to quit mid-session before tilting off the rest of my stack.

Boys (and girls, sorry Ace), kiss your children tonight.

We’re lucky to be alive after a near miss from an Everest sized Asteroid passed Earth very close earlier today. Apparently it was only picked up a week ago and it was a Planet Killer asteroid that would have wiped us all the **** out
