1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Good morning everyone! Got a great sleep, didn't hurt to have a glass of rose with dinner at the steakhouse with a poker friend (I promised I would treat her, it was overdue), we chatted and gossiped, it was a great time.

Also didn't hurt to run well at poker no matter what I played, ended up around $3,400 on the day! At 5/T/25, got 3! by this reg who last week or so complained when I joined his 2/5 game very audibly and nastily, I revenge called him with QJo, flopped top pair and a gutshot and shoved it in his face on his double barrel on QT85ss, he tank folded....

br challenge: $13,850 to go! Almost halfway there. can I do it by the end of the month? We'll see.

And yes, some dealers here have a very entitled attitude about them like they are god's gift to earth for putting up with us loser gamblers at mgmnh.

I'm definitely all for not tipping a dealer that is way out of line.

Super slow session, top sets cracked at plo, A5s lose to QTo on TT3A, big o is slow too. Might play 25/50 later, will see.

Colluder couple are back playing at the same table again, makes me sick. They ran up huge stacks playing together the other night too.

Won AQT97ds at 10/10 with two pair nfd open ender to same two pair worse fd, then had to give up my seat to game organizer and played in a mediocre 25/50 line up where I ran TT into AA and chopped thankfully and otherwise was very card dead and bled down for a few hours. Running it up again at 25/25 plo now, AKJt5ds won a decent one and AQJJTds split another one.

Wrapped up 25/25 plo5 on a good W, winning AJT98ds on AT87, made it $200 pre, my flop bet of $700 was called, V donked pot on turn bringing by bdfd and I stuffed it for $3k, he snapped and board pairing 7 river, he must have had the low straight as I was still good. Nice one to win as this V had sorta had my number lately.

Ended up booking only a modest win on the day thanks to a loss at 25/50 hold 'em but excellent results at plo.

Woke up a couple hours earlier than I expected, but still good enough 7 hours + of sleep, enjoying lattes now and chill music and staying cool during this intense heat wave.

Oh also I am very grateful that my toilet flushed this morning; it was stopped up last night. That is all.

br challenge: $13,575 to go.

iced coffee for the win!

Slow start to the session, lost a couple big pots with AA including AAQQ on J74cc my nfd to JJ in 3! pot, made a come back with AAK98ds multi-way 5! pot and now wrapping up bday dinner with friends at the steakhouse again. Second half of the session soon, hope to run better! Only stuck a few hundo after being down 2.5k.

Roaring come back, $3.9k at 1/2 plo and another $2.5 at 10/10, $6.4k day, very nice result. Lost AAT54ds in 3! pot spr .5 he flopped second nut flush I had naked A, it didn’t go well. Won some flips at least.

Br challenge: $7175 to go.

Hello everyone . . . I woke up today and was delighted to see what time it was and that I had been sleeping soundly all night, felt a little groggy what I crawled out of bed so at first I figured I woke up early, it was probably just due to the meds. Happily surprised I got a solid 10+ hours. Will be fully energized and fresh for a good day of pokerz!

If it wasn't for the shot takes in the big game I would be on my way to another monthly record. This month is just average right now but I'm not complaining. I am blessed.

Got a new student and someone interested in a cfp deal, gotta sort out the payment methods for the second one though before we get started.

I am going to take my trader friend's advice and hold off on investing in the market until the next correction, everything is at all time highs now...gotta buy the dip.

Good start to the night, lost KK to AA on K944 all in ott, lost AA nfd back door open ender to 3x on J33dd in 3! pot, but then made a stellar come back with other hands and won $1400. Left the game as it got bad, for 2/5. Might hop back into plo if it I can get a seat in a better game.

Quit lame game for 2/5 for an hour or so, then got back into a better plo game, as soon as I sat down and brought all my chips from earlier (normally $700 max but I brought $3,500, all my winnings from before), a rec player called the floor on me because he thought I brought too much even though I explained I was playing at another table not long before. The rule is if you play the same game within 2 hours you must bring all your chips back, floor confirmed this, and it was a little ridiculous to call me out for following the rules. "If you're scared just say so," I needled. "You're not cool enough to say that," he replied. He lost a medium-sized pot to this nit grinder and quit before I got him, and the game died down and I quit. Ended up booking a $2.5k win on the day, even though I missed a flop raise with top set but we were quite deep and I was going for a turn x/r. All in all a good day. 25/50 ran but I passed this time, I wanted to regain some confidence before heading back there again.

br challenge: $4,675 to go.

Did ok last session, started rough yesterday with a couple marginal all ins multiway, but won AAAKTss three ways all in pre, won AAKQ7ds three ways all in pre too, lost ds t-high rundown to k-high rundown at the end to action player in 4! pot and was getting tired so I called it a session. After a slow start to the month it is rounding out well despite the lackluster showings in 25/50/100 hold 'em, and this first half of the year is going very well, phenomenally compared to last year in fact. Helps to keep remind myself how well I’m doing whenever I start to feel frustrated in a session.

Here's my graph for the first 6 months or so of 2024, pretty smooth sailing!

Br challenge: $3675 to go (or so).

Mid-session update: pretty slow 1/2 5 session, but got invited to 10/10 plo by the organizer who said he likes me, which is great! Won JJ on JJsTs to TT, 9s came on turn putting in two straight flushes and V kept blasting and ripped river for $1,000, I shrug called and I was good against a way overplayed TT, but I would not have been shocked to see KQs either. Almost wrapping up another br challenge in around 9 days or so, pretty stoked!

I can't underscore enough how beneficial it has been to focus on just poker for my results and general well-being. As a veteran mixed game pro once said, "I play poker so I don't have to work." When you can do so much better playing than working, it's a no brainer! A friend noticed my new muscles the other day too! Getting into shape!

Wrapped up on a W, mostly due to 10/10 where I won AAT84ss in 3! pot on 886 flop versus JJTT9, $200-->$800 pre squeeze, shipped flop $1,500 and scooped against the same guy with TT against my JJ on JJT earlier.

br challenge: $1,800 to go.

Won $5.3k at 10/10 before I gave up my seat to this reg I used to have bad blood with, figured it would smooth things over with him. I stayed first up ton the list to get back in the game when a seat opened up so it doesn’t look like I’m just hitting and running (which is something I’ve been unfairly accused of!). Also, dude who owes a ton to people money decided to run it once for the main pot in a three way all in and then announced he had quads (true), but I didn’t realize it was on the second runout and he wasn’t in the main pot for that board. I annoyingly realized it a few hands later after he’d been awarded half of the main pot incorrectly and was pissed at myself for letting him pull a fast one on me. “What’s $1,000 among friends?” I joked.

Last some back at 1/2 plo, won some more once my seat opened up at 10/10 again, was very card dead but got a nice compliment from a player on my game, eventually got AA944ss and squeezed and held, then called it a night. Br challenge complete!

Woke up a little earlier than expected, but feel well-rested so it's ok. chatted with my mom about a new, big development in Athens including a casino, something to look forward to perhaps down the line. Was complaining to her about being a little bored lately, doing the same thing day in day out. It's been great for my bottom line but a little dull. At least I have a date planned, that should mix things up.

Got a little sun, a little exercise, my caffeine...people weren't lying when they said it can be lonely at the top. I do feel more isolated.

Someone I hardly know said I was the best player...said he was playing in Vegas and I'd have been proud of him the way he played, we exchanged numbers. cool to have a fanbase.

I'm feeling a little generous with how well my year has gone. I'm giving away an hour of free plo5 coaching to whoever can make the best case for why they need it, either PM me or tell me here.

Played a quicky session in the afternoon before my date, ran hot, playing 1/2/5/10, QQJ86ds was biggest, 3! pre shipped wrap+fd gii three ways and made my flush which was good. Up a few grand really fast, yippie!

I was talking with plo friends and my monthly results are eerily consistent, likely a factor of skill and winrate and not much standard deviation. Dope! Who says PLO is a high variance game anyway?

Evening 10/10 session was rough, got beat up in the beginning losing several buy-ins, but made a great comeback to win all $6k back, AAK55ds flopped bottom set nfd nut gutter and got there versus top set JJ on JT5hh was one, also scooped A8873ds on 569 both my bdfd, I made my nut flush on both runouts.

Lattes good sleep music, gonna be a good day! Very sunny outside too, might go for a walk.

Pretty coffee design today!

And the harbor by mgm at night!

Played a little longer than I should have last night, about broke even at 5/5, shipped AQT73ds pre and got called by a stubborn AQQ, made it back flopping trips in 3! pot against AA, then sat in 25/25 when they finally called my name for 30 minutes before game broke, got KQJT3ds and called a 3! and whiffed, then played 1/2 and lost dsAA765 double nut flush draw and turned wrap against two sets and the board still paired. called it a night up much less than I was at my peak but still up so I'll take it. Turning out to be another really good month.

Extremely well done

Thank you!

Yesterday made most of my profits at 2/5 while waiting for plo, lost a buy in at 10/10 AKK88ds 15bb eff. ran into AA with the $100 restraddle on, left to take a break as the game organizer was giving me a hard time and I got slowrolled, nothing really happened at 1/2 until I decided to come back to 10/10, game got really good, won an AA pre and was up several thousand until I lost AA644ds all in pre for $7.5k to an AKJT5 rundown, also lost KQT87 to 22 on JTT26, but made a comeback and finished up a little thanks to AAK53ds in 4! pot $1,500 pre and flop AT2, ran it twice and boated on both. Booked a decent win on the day but couldn't help but think how much more I'd be up if I didn't lose that AA in that $17k pot.

Keep it up Dumbo 😀

Thanks, pman!

Some mid-year stats by my main games and stakes...

1/2 plo $5 bring-in: $150/hr.

10/10/50 plo: $635/hr.

5/10/25 hold 'em: $154/hr.

2/5 hold 'em: $98/hr.

I am losing at the big hold 'em games over a negligibly small sample.

Really good I'd say!
