Ivey chip leader at his table with 246 BB. Super soft table.
I don’t understand why it’s such a revelation that people were not that good 20+ years ago. There was no software, no content online, barely any footage of pros playing with hole cards, no training. Just a few books written by people who you just had to take their word for that they knew what they were talking about. No one really compares sports athletes of today to ones many years ago other than the extreme outliers (Jordan, etc…)
No one is surprised that players weren't has good 20 years ago as they are now – at least, when it comes to NL. That part we all just sort of get. No, the "revelation" is more about just how much worse the average rank-and-file player was. (Hell, I know how all of the things I did wrong when I first started playing, and yet I was a consistent winner – which tells you how had the average player must have been.)
Bear in mind, the biggest difference is that the WSOP – unlike professional or Olympic sports – is one of the only competitive arenas where anyone can take part. This is also why the play on a show like High Stakes Poker from that era still looks more or less similar to the game we know now. Not so much with WSOP or WPT events.
If anything, WSOP play in the mid-2000s is probably closer to what the NBA looked like in its first decade. Go watch videos from the 1980s and 1990s, and it still looks like pretty good basketball. But go back to the days of Cousy and Mikan, and it's hardly recognizable.

Agree. Since early 2010s, the Main Event winners have nearly all been very good pros (Merson, Reiss, Jacobson, McKeehan, Cynn, Ensan, Aldemir, Jorstad, Weinman). There is NO way someone like Moneymaker, Gold, Yang, can win the Main Event in today's environment. Heck, even Raymer & Hachem, who are both pretty good, can't win it even if they got a crazy rush of cards.
My view is that an above average player can make the Final Table if they get an insane rush of cads & good luck, similar to Gold 2006. But they won't win it because of the skills gap.
Ryan LaPlante at 1.32M in chips! That's 1,320 BB. Is that an error or real? The chip leader from Day 2ABC ended the day at 800K. This is crazy if true.
Lol @ this shove with KQ absolutely epic

in the mid 2000s a TON of players had been playing for a year tops. poker was everywhere you went. these days the vast majority of bad players have at least been playing for a while.

Very interesting point
I think most people play the Main Event just to say they played it and maybe cash in it but I doubt many think they are ever going to win it
How do they decide who they feature? I dig Pollak as much as the next guy but how the hell did we go from Ivey’s table to Pollak’s? This **** ain’t worth the cost…
i believe he was playing a bunch online, idk if it predated wsop win but he used to post a lot in strat threads and was very respected
Speaking of that, at least kind of, maybe not the right thread for it, but because I tried to look up his online results and didn't really find anything. I tried to look up my old stars/full tilt mtt results not that long ago just for fun, is that stuff still available anywhere for free anymore? officialpokerrankings is dead, pokerdb seems like it might still work, but the free version only lists a little, and nothing for full tilt unless you "opt in" which I don't think is even possible anymore.
Finally get to see her play and see if she actually has game. She travels the world playing tournaments, so she must be winning right? lol
Chance Kornuth was incredible in the booth imo, some great strategy insights. Hope he is on again on another day.
Kitty Kuo looks just like the girls in the catfishing/pig-butchering scams I get targeted by multiple times a day on FB, IG, Twitter, WhatsApp, and text message.
Seems like they really value the concept of crossover appeal, so someone who is vaguely famous outside of poker is a strong candidate to be picked.
I guess I see both sides of it. I'd rather watch some crushers play than Kevin Pollak (sorry Kevin Pollak). On the other hand, the early days of the Main are when it's still full of carnival energy. You'll get plenty of chances to see Euro pros 5-bet bluff on days 5 and 6 when all the Hollywood types are back home watching from the couch.

The pics always do look really off.
I wonder if late at night Frankie thinks "wow, really wish I didnt nail her after Hustler that night"
Just out of college and now a kid with someone 20ish years older who barely speaks English and lives half way around the world
I sincerely hope he does not have massive regret or anxiety about how quickly and drastically his life changed
And no, no matter how much money her family has makes it worth it if he didnt want all this
wealthy family - very common - see allen kessler
bad and inconsistent touchup editing, you may think you saw 10 different asian women but in fact it was 10 different kuo selfies
She uses some kind of filter for most of her pics, maybe we won't even recognize her.
