1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Made $1,000 in the end, the big fish quit and I was exhausted and so did I. br challenge: $80,990 left.

Re: DBBPs: It was a special occasion I guess, the VIP wanted to do them and the floor didn't notice.

I reset my schedule again, woke up relatively early with the sun just after noon and after a solid night's sleep, a great way to start the day. Had a dream I was playing a three way 3! pot with the big hold 'em game organizer who was sitting on an elevated table in a large room looking down on the rest of us and I thought I had KK but when I looked back at my cards after an A93sss flop to do a spade check I actually had K5s and flopped the nut flush! The board paired on the river but I bet $2,500 anyway and he snap folded. Everyone in the room was rooting for him, so it was a little tense.

I reached a new yearly milestone in annual winnings yesterday which was really cool. My friend said go to a park and take a break, but it's been so hot outside! 101 degrees two days straight, yeesh!

I wonder if I will ever make $1,000,000 in a year playing this game....

Pretty slow session so far, lost top set to draw, lost AKK in 3! pot to AA nfd with my nut gutter kind flush draw and double set draw against wild player, took a lunch break to cool down and put in for a table change at least where game is better. A little frustrated and annoyed with the quality of the games during the day. Feels like a waste of energy lately to play before 5pm.

dt how have things been, glad to see this thread still going

Think more your style exploits the average evening players better. A different style player would likely win less but with less variance at the day games. As you wrote earlier game selection is key. Glad you are continuing to win and focusing on winning at life not just winning at poker. You should be proud of yourself.

Hi there rickroll..all is well, phenomenal poker year so far - far exceeding expectations. Lots of good changes to my life, better mental health and physical health, etc. very blessed to have become so successful at playing poker. Coaching plo5 now too on the side.

Seems I’ve found my calling for now at least. Happy I’m no longer juggling work and cards, that was a nightmare!

Thanks so much! I still find it hard to wrap my head around where my poker journey has taken me. Not too many feet from the 1/3 tables in the same room I started the grind in a few years ago, but seemingly miles away in so many other respects.

Sometimes I stop and wonder what’s the point though…more money only takes you so far. Hopefully I can do a lot of good with mine one day? Like funding good projects to help vulnerable populations. That’s the long term vision anyway. Hope I can get to that phase.

sounds great man, glad to hear that, plo is too many cards for my lizard brain to handle but glad it's going well for you

Won $1,500, partially thanks to a little mixed play, so br challege is down to $79,490. Pat A2356 won half in badacey, AA held in plo. Pretty spent. Earned a good night's sleep!

Woke up a little groggier than normal, probably due to the sedating meds and waking up a little later today, but I'll brush it off as the day wears on and my caffeine kicks in. Watched a Lex O vlog, he's so handsome and affable, gonna exercise and then hit the felt again although honestly feeling a little underwhelmed with the idea of playing right now. Was nice to get a few rounds of the mix in yesterday at least for a little variety, keeps poker fresh and not stale. It's important to my motivation to stay interested in playing and "mixing it up" now and then helps.

I updated and edited my PLO5 strat guide this afternoon to include additional sections on advanced bluffing, SPR stats, playing different made hands at different SPRs, draws, and more hand examples. It is 14 single-spaced pages long now, a few pages longer than previously. The price is now $25 but people who bought an earlier edition can obtain the latest one for only the difference in price between the two ($5) rather than the full $25. If you’re interested, just email me from the same email address you used to purchase the earlier edition and PayPal me the $5 to ichispiro@gmail.com.

I kept updating the guide this evening during my session and wasn’t completely focused on the game so I am stuck a little right now. But I am very happy with the result and the guide is in great shape. Got top two fd in versus mid set nfd and also lost with wrap fd to pair plus nfd. Running into some big hands where I thought I was pushing equity given the action but I was behind, or tried to isolate a fish to knock out better one way draws with my combo draw but they called anyway. Oh well…! I should follow the advice of my guide and just stick to nut draws…lol.

what's the origin story of the guide? was it for others from day one or did you make it for yourself to better remember what you've studied and learned and then modified it for release to others?

It was intended to crystallize my thoughts and also help others. I was pretty sure I was going to publish it and sell it from day one.

Pretty smashed today, big value hands not holding, a couple second best hands against the types who could be betting worse, down a bunch. Month still pretty good despite the hit, could be better but not exactly complaining. Lost mid set open ender flush draw to AA plus open ender, printing there, also lost AAT75 in 4! pot to 98 on 986 nuts for me plus my nut flush draw, jammmed $1,100 flop and he got there. Ayeee!

At least I revised the guide and got something good done today. -$7000 or so. One of my worst days ever. I guess given the stakes I play thatÂ’s not so bad.

Challenge: $86,490 or so to go.

Edit: just lost KKQJ5 to Q8755 all in pre. -$680 more. $87,170 to go now.

Lost top three hit my nut gutter on turn with back door spades action player hit his naked gutter with nfd and hit his flush draw…

-$700 more! Ayeee. $87,870 now. Set over setted someone and made $600 back at the end. $87,270.

After a brutal session, woke up late to rest, worked on my guide more (17 pages now), sipping on lattes before heading out to play. Had very negative experience with dude who told me to kill myself a while back, and I was in for piles, he kept cussing me out and influencing the action when I was in the hand.

It's ok though, I feel satisfied helping move the game of PLO5 forward with my writings and coaching and that's something no amount of vitriol can take away from me.

5/5 session started rough losing top set in 4! pot to nfd, jammed dsAJJ pre and ran into AA as a short stack, but then a couple AA held up and I’m up a couple grand. Looks like things are turning around quickly. Strat guide is in even better shape now 17 pages long and lots of good meat and potatoes in there. One of my students thinks it will change the game..! Holy cow!

Damn did I miss the deadline? If not, Sept 8th.

Nov 9!

Guessing October 1. Good Luck!

I won $3,700 last night when all was said and done, good rebound from the brutal session the night before. Didn't feel any residual tilt either. Road to $100,000: $83,570 to go. Last day to get your guesses in! Good ones so far.

Grumpy old reg got into yet another argument with a player last night, a big black dude, he kept taunting the reg about being gay repeating "open wide," "stuff your mask in your mouth" (the reg still wears a dirty old mask from the plague days). It was sorta a riot. "I'm your worst nightmare," the guy said to him.

Pretty annoying session, some second best some losing flips and not a lot of premium hands. Lost 98s to 84o in a 3! pot on 842cc to an action player too to start the night at 2/5. Trying to focus and play well despite the decent bad streak.

-$3,300 today, lost a couple hands to action players I wouldn’t normally call off against most but they had it, jammed AJT97ds pre lost to 65432 (other player had AA), made a decent comeback with trips over trips and a set in a bomb pot, and rounded it out with +$300 at 1/2 5 card. Strong finish after a rocket start.

Made a good play against what was likely an overpair with diamonds with AKJT4, QJ22 c/shipped turn he tank folded. I owed him this one for the time he bluffed me similarly years ago and showed it.

Wrap nfd didn’t get there against AA and two pair in 3! pot, this is getting really annoying but reflecting on my year up until now I can’t really complain. Sold another strat guide at least. $86,870 to go. And I’m still winning decently this month. Just a little rough patch.
