Walz flubbed on the Hong Kong question. He should've answered that first, say he misspoke, then move on to what he lead with, which would've been good had it not looked like he was attempting to dodge the HK question.

Agreed.

by pocket_zeros k

LOL Vance just said his texts to friends saying Trump didn't deliver on the economy was because he believed the misinformation from the media about Trump.

Agreed again. This was absurd.

yeah he was doing alright until then and tanked

at that i backed the truck up on gop positions with plans to trade out tomorrow - highly unlikely this isn't viewed as a Trump win tonight

Yeah, sounds like he was off by just a couple months. Could have been way more direct.

Why do the moderators keep telling the candidates that their time is up after they have voluntarily stopped talking?

these moderators are a joke, i've seen better structured high school president debates

you see how much they smugly smirked upon muting the mics? like wtf?

He's not really a details guy so it's hard for him to come off as smart.

Yep. For me, he is too glib to come across as exceptionally intelligent.

he speaks with confidence usually unseen and in clear and concise words and phrases instead of the word salad kamala and trump and even to a lesser degree walz

just compare sentence structures between the two, most of america forgot who amber thurman is or what he's talking about by the time he finished speaking whereas vance is very clear and understandable

vance is absolutely crushing this - future president imo

They don't seem smug to me. They do seem to lack gravitas.

they're deferring to whoever's controlling the mics as to whether to cut anyone off

i wouldn't call this a great debate but it's a good model for what the actual presidential debates could've been. they're at least addressing the questions and engaging on substance. jokes on me though bc nobody's actually looking for substance

Lol...

Vance "Things were great under Trump it's just common sense everyone knows it.....also I didn't know that in 2020 becuzz teh MeDiAZ."

Norah O'Donnell reading Vance's own quote saying America would be the most barbaric pro-abortion regime anywhere in the entire world if they don't pass a nationwide ban of abortion after 15 weeks was brutal.

Vance is clearly a gifted debater. I was particularly impressed in how he reframed his use of the word 'barbaric' for abortions to mean something less divisive. The fact he realized how brutal that quote was and patiently found an opportunity to turn it around a minute later was very impressive.

I won't pretend to know who this country will elect to be president in the future, although I pray that it will not be JD Vance. You need to go back and watch Romney, Obama, HRC, Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney, Paul Ryan, etc., in debates if you think that JD Vance is some sort of unprecedented master of the English language. Being able to speak in complete sentences is closer to the norm than the exception for candidates in presidential and vice-presidential debates.

The debate is fine in terms of delivering substance. Vice-presidential debates often are more substantive than presidential debates.

Whenever Vance tries to humanize his persona and speak about his kids it just comes off weird and almost creepy. I can't quite put my finger on it and maybe it's not fair but he just oozes insincerity.

we gotta make the doors lock better. that's a policy i can get behind

Vance stumbles and talks about the U.S. has high levels of mental health abuse, and then Walz mistakenly says that he became friends with school shooters. LOL.

Vance called climate change weird science and said the difference between US and finland is weird. Is he trying to take the word back like rappers and the n word?

Vance keeps steering the discussions into healthcare, which is surprising because it's not a Republican strength. Earlier when Walz said he looks forward to talking about healthcare, Vance said second it. This tells me we're going to be hearing a doozie of a prepared statement/position on healthcare from Vance.

The general cadence of the debate is markedly differently than the beginning. Vance came out attacking (effectively) but is now almost Kumbaya with Walz. This is a grown-up way to debate but I think a negative for Vance/Trump overall.

25 million illegals!!!....with enough money and/or credit to buy a house...

Just last week I lost a bid on a million-dollar house to an illegal alien who works as a dishwasher at the Chinese joint down the street.

I was trying to figure out the right way to sum this debate up and I think bolded is exactly it

Vance is definitely abandoning the MAGA schtick in favor of relatability and bipartisanship which…..weirdly hurts his brand

Vance has performed in a way that impresses me immensely, which I have to imagine isn’t a good thing for trump

by rickroll k

he's absolutely curb stomping this imo - best debate performance i've ever seen

Idk if you’ve changed your mind on this but I highly disagree. I think it’s a wash, and when you consider that Walz was supposed to be relatively weak at debates. edit: that’s a win for him

Vance is using debate tactics like trying to find common ground and then emphasize difference. This can build a slight win in debate and is good for classical debate performance, but he hasn’t gone for the jugular on a lot of these issues and it doesn’t seem very combative. It sounds like two people that agree on a large amount of issues, which will never be a bloodbath.
