1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.
I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.
I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?
I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.
Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
DT
$64,859 left on the challenge. Almost out of the downswing now too. Nice feeling as always. Have not lost my aggression much either, even with all the bad run. Someone commented yesterday that I have become more aggressive after I stopped working. Maybe I have too much pent up energy I am trying to expel that I didn't previously have after a day of working lol.
Battled hard all day, ended up winning $1,200 or so, missed a couple spots I could have taken with mid set no back up but opted not to as the risk was too high and if I was beat I was drawing almost dead. Incorrectly folded an underfull against the wrong guy in one hand as well...maniacs are tough to play against, especially multiway in plo5 where they can easily have a strong hand.
It would be nice to have someone to love and be in a relationship, people who are married are lucky. As I get older I am starting to realize that more and more. At least I still have my family, parents and sister.
Happy to book another win all things considered. And now, some rest!
I am incredibly lucky. I married my best friend (at 40, so I knew who I was looking for). I'm not the type of woman who has "girl friends." I want to do everything with my husband -- he feels the same about me. That said, sometimes it sounds fun to be single w/o having to worry about someone else and their baggage. Do what you want, go where you want when you want, etc. The grass is sometimes greener 😉
If you do find someone, make sure they are your best friend. I know so many couples who don't seem to want to be "together." For example, they go on vacation together but then split up -- one goes to play golf; the other shops, etc. Or they take separate vacations -- he with the boys; she with the girls. That does not sound like a fun relationship to me, but to each their own, I guess. As I said, I got very lucky.
$63,601 to go or so. Slept late, woke up late . . . so much for resetting my sleep schedule. Sigh.
My parents are always getting into arguments, not the best example of a happy couple. Yes, I would consider you lucky Javanewt!
My friend the other night at 5/5 plo complained the game was boring, said "we just jerk each other off playing the nuts here." I have not been playing as long as he has, I can only imagine how much harder poker becomes 10+ years in as someone playing around 6-7 years at this point. I try to find moments in the madness and appreciate the money.

Sometimes I think it's just better to stick to the 1/2/5. The good players move up; the bad players and recs/tourists stay at the lowest level, so their money is easier to get. It just takes a little longer to get as much 😉
Currently waiting for a hold em seat after a long night of plo, ran meh and up a little on the day so far. Colluding couple sat at same 5/5 game and I said I would not play if they were both there (we switched the game to 5/5 from 1/2 and she came over to join him), prompting the usual barrage of insults and disparaging remarks from them. “Cookoo” is his new favorite, attacking my mental health as usual. He even threw in a well-timed backwards shift in his chair as I walked behind him, almost hitting me in the process. What a class act.
Anyway I outed them again to everyone and mentioned the petition 25 players signed asking mgmnt to keep them off the same table. I got an approving nod from another reg who has been around for a long time and one newer player told me she didnÂ’t respect them at all and thought I was cool and handled their bullying well. In revenge she screwed me over. I asked for a seat change as a player was about to quit and the players next to me heard me but not the dealer. Colluding wife then asked the dealer for the seat. I said I already claimed it. She called the floor who ruled you have to ask the dealer for the seat for it to count.
Toxic pro must have become friendly with them (I guess bullies like each other) as I am their common threat and he suddenly arrived this morningÂ…she dished all her gossip about the evening to him. Toxic pro later tables changed to my game along with her and at that point I decided it was time to quit as the game wasnÂ’t that good anyway and hell if I was going to lose any of my money to these two.
Going to round out another long session at two card unless plo gets good and I can get a seat in a new game without those pricks.
Some chatter in game about Colin kapernick’s knee in the nfl…integrity and principles above money….we need more people with good moral character in poker who are willing to make hard decisions and sacrifice to do the right thing and make sure Justice prevails. It’s hard because it’s so dog eat dog and there is a lot of greed…. I hope I set a good example anyway. I credit my legal background to this.

Kapernick was doing the right thing? I hope that is not what you are implying. Either way I don't think anyone needs a social justice warrior misreg.
Don't you get caught frequently trying to go north? Are you constantly table changing preying on the weakest of the weak?
It is, but only Dumbo can maintain his integrity and be a pillar of morality while table changing 10 times a day to chase the fish and bend the rules when it suits him while being a rules nit to others. If you look up the dictionary definition of hypocrite you will see a photo of his avatar.
Very groggy from waking up in the middle of the night, switching sleep patterns is rough. Lattes and music now (frou frou), then hopefully a good game to jump into. Up $1,100 yesterday. $62,501 to go.
Was not feeling well when I woke up...nauseous and headache...not great to constantly be changing my schedule. Popped a couple ibuprofen, went back to bed for a few more hours and felt better when I woke up. Had a banana and some nut mix.
Some hands from the last sessions:
At 5/5, AQTT4 Q diamonds, AT3dd, lose to QJ9T3 no diamonds to runner runner straight. Also lose with nut straight ott to rivered boat.
Win AAKQ2ds three ways all in pre. correctly bluff catch Q flush on T73ccc to someone who I know uses the naked A...she announces two pair and I hold.
Open QJT98ds ssdd, flop 863hhd, someone donks, we flat, turn off suit 9, they jam we snap we hold versus 96xxx (plus hearts we assume).
2/5, open AdQs, bet and get raised small on Q52dd, flat, call and call down 7Q runout and I'm good v. K9dd.
Really not feeling well today, had to leave early to pop some pills and eat. Didn't play great either, lost around $850 at plo getting KQQ86ds in multiway on JT3 my q flush draw in a 3! pot, also lost nut wrap double bdfd in 3! pot (this was standard). All this schedule changing is really taking its toll this time.

I am confused. Is there a rule against changing tables? Is there a rule against chasing fish? How does it affect his integrity?
Colluding says something about someone's integrity -- and there are rules against it. Being rude and making derogatory slurs can say something about someone's integrity -- and many rooms have rules against that, too. Calling someone a hypocrite when they aren't being a hypocrite might say something about someone's integrity, too.
Feel better, Dumbo.
We've been sick basically since we got back from Paris last week. I had two good days, but don't feel well again today. Most of my co-workers and their significant others who were with me all got sick, too, but we were never really together, so something must be going around.

Why did you conveniently fail to address how he expects others to let him go north? That’s cut and dry hypocrisy. Leaving out parts that don’t fit your narrative says something about integrity too.
There is no rule against changing tables and chasing fish, but it’s predatory, parasitic, poor etiquette, and terrible for the game to do it excessively. It’s within his right to do it but you’d have to be delusional or a hypocrite when you do that all day yet claim to be a paragon of virtue. Imagine if everyone did the same thing? It’d be a race to the bottom.

Thanks for being a voice of reason. I gave up responding to trolls a long time ago. It’s not worth my precious time and energy. Feel Better soon.

Well, if he's adding chips to go above the buy-in and it is against casino rules, shame on Dumbo, but I highly doubt it.
We had a guy do that at Aria. Kept pulling out big chips and adding to his stack. Nobody said a word because he just distributed them to the rest of the table 😉
Really annoying day, lost with rolled up kings to runner runner aces full in stud 8, I made a boat too, lost pat 97 in single draw to a two card draw, at plo lost double flush draw ott against two straights, then got into an argument with this dude who didn’t want me to go north after I got stacked. What a crappy day. I’m so ready for July to be over.
Not only does he do it, he gets into arguments with people when they tell him not to break the rules.
BTW, pointing out where you think someone is wrong or disagreeing with them is not trolling.

That happens in a lot of places IME - a loose losing fish gets to go north without anyone citing the cap rule but a tight winning reg does not. Dumbo is not a loose losing fish from what I've read in his blog 😀
Won $1,600 in the end yesterday, ran bad in the beginning but game got better and I made it back and then some. $60,901 to go.
AKQJ8ss won in a 4! pot QQJ flop, lol, easy game. JT975ds also won all in pre at a nitty table and a double flush draw and gutter got there ott against set plus straight.
It's my 37th birthday so I am going to see my family later and celebrate. Another birthday and I am wondering if this (poker, blog, all of it) is what I want to be doing with my life, and for how long. I've made plenty of money and now I want to focus more on enjoying life...after years of degeneracy I don't know what that means though.
What do people do to have fun? Sometimes I wonder if I am capable of having fun anymore if it doesn't involve the high of wagering money.
Lattes and music (Mariah carey, almost home) now, popped a pill for my lingering headache, then I guess I'll get an extra good workout and stretch in for my bday.
