2024 ELECTION THREAD
The next presidential race will be here soon! Please see current Bovada odds. Thoughts?
This is literally MAGA in a ****ing nutshell. ‘I have the right to do or say whatever I want whether it can be proven or not but also you must play by my rules that I won’t hold myself to’
Yup. Which is why I agree with you that anyone who claims you should try and understand them can get ****ed.
It gets used in academic/non-mathematical contexts often enough that people need to be familiar with it.
*Tangential is another such term.
I never suggested that people shouldn't know what the word "orthogonal" means. I'm all for people understanding what words mean. But when two terms are available that are synonyms, I generally favor the more commonly used term. I make an exception if the more obscure term is funnier. Everyone should prefer "hirsute" to "hairy."

Sesquipedalian, /case.
Yeah, it was pretty funny watching moron right wingers reinventing Roe after realizing 5 weeks was ludicrous and unpopular.
Roe was a monstrous decision not for it's content, but because inventing parts of the constitution annihilates the rule of law.
It's actually good, very very good, that republicans rejected complete abortion bans in some states, and/or crafted 12-14 weeks bans in others and so on. It's how it's supposed to be.
And again, 12 weeks isn't Roe
I am not upset, and I obviously was exaggerating. But only a touch. Sure, the people calling Trump an authoritarian or whatever have some responsibility for raising the temperature. But their level of responsibility is truly miniscule compared to his level of responsibility.
Okay. I didn't really think you were upset ditto on exageration. I was just furious at the abuse of logic.
Obvisouly we are far less influential than trump as individuals but it's still important. That's why we lock up in the uk when they call for racist arson attacks.

Like, quite honestly - without researching anything, I'd just assumed that everything you said was good was bad and vice versa, and applied that principle from the start of your posting career here, I'd be a millionaire if I'd found someone to take the action on your side.
You're misconstruing what I wrote 100% what I wrote is what you wrote right there--I just simplified it to 2nd tri/health of the mother/states can regulate. Most people more or less agree on those things. Anything beyond trimester 1 accounts for a tiny overall% of abortions anyway. So making a giant fight about the few beyond it is just more silliness considering the bigger picture.
We saw what the nuts wanted when they started coming out 5-6wk bans(effectively complete bans) and have since softe
Ah the "mostly peaceful" theory of abortion after the first trimester sure.
Try to reverse it: If it's such a tiny number , what would the problem be banning them?
And no 12-15weeks DECIDED STATE BY STATE isn't what you essentially had, which was an usurpation of state rights by SCOTUS, predicated on fantasies about the penumbra.
The radical minority who want strict abortion bans , as it is rightly the case in a democracy, lost except where it is actually a majority, and that's how things should be for the vast majority of topics (all those not expressely delegated to the federal goverment).
When I say othoganal I means (statistically) independent. Saying these things were perpendicular would be very wierd.
'independent' can often mean something else.
Similarly I use 'proximity' which once caused a row.

Go down the race track with him and let it ride

I don't understand what you mean here, action on my side in which sense? i fully expect my value preferences (which for me as for everyone else, are purely arbitrary) to be minoritarian , even very minoritarian, on many topics.
That doesn't make them more or less "correct" (if any correctness can exist in arbitrary value preferences)

I know. I guess I meant if there were an objective arbiter of these things, which of course the isn't. In the absence of such, I meant "after researching it, do I agree with your conclusion," and from experience the answer is "no".

The 'problem' was the use of the supreme court. I made the point many years ago that those defending the court making law would rue it when it got used by the bad guys.
Of course no-one else cared when it was going well. Well maybe godel did.

I feel like the blame is one the authoritarian here, not the people calling it out. The call outs are a responsibility.
Just me, though.

Can't find it now, but there was a funny cartoon a few years back with one guy running around setting fire to everything, another guy smashing the emergency glass to get to the fire extinguisher, and the caption reading "see, extremists on both sides".
Are those things called cartoons or comics? I changed my mind like 4 times now. You know what I mean.
In case anyone was interested, Luciom, who lives in this subforum now, has no record of a single post in politics a year ago and beyond despite having a registered account for almost 20 years
Do with this info what you will
I'm pretty sure we will never hear from him again after this election. It may be "suicide by mod" though.

Regardless of the reason give by SCOTUS, you believe allowing a state to regulate abortions in the second trimester under a lower level of scrutiny is somehow expansive for the mother's or individual's rights?
Yeah, the state is not adding any value here. The AMA and other medical groups have sensible policies on when 12 week abortions should be done. Involving a state governor or state legislature does nothing but limit individual freedom.
I firmly believe the government should not be involved in any medical decisions at all.
The party of small government disagrees
Any ideas who Mathematical Dick was? I suspect it was the alt of someone from SMP but I don't know them well enough to recognise style or whatnot.
Sorry - totally unrelated to the post I quoted, just saw you posting and remembered I'd meant to ask you.
Oh I know, I went to a church service with a family member a few months back (I, uh, don't really normally partake in that) and the speaker told everyone not to sign a circulating petition that was for limiting government involvement in medical decisions even though we would normally be for something like that but this one was just a trick to get abortion on the ballot.
Uh, yeah. That's the point numbskull.

Lol that's brilliant. "Trick".
