Dem cover story or a Republican controlled state govt that won't allow the process to be uodated/modernized to start processing/counting votes early. How will we ever know which one it is?

I cut the cord 20 years ago and the only ads I've seen in that time are whatever shows up silently on the TVs in various waiting rooms or restaurants I've been in, and sometimes while watching football games during fantasy season. It seems most streams now come from NFL+, though, so they just show that logo during ad breaks.

Only on TV we get the Detroit feeds of ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox Every stinking ad is Slotkin and Rogers ads and than Trump Harris ads. We have limited streaming services here as well

If Kamala wins, here is a scenario that I very easily could imagine happening. (All times are Eastern time.)
Polls close in Pennsylvania at 8 pm. As expected, early results are consistent with the expectation that Pennsylvania will be very, very close.
Polls close in Arizona, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin at 9 pm, leaving Nevada as the only state that is still in play with polls still open.
By 9:45 pm, it's clear that it doesn't matter what happens in Nevada and that the winner of Pennsylvania is highly likely to win the election. Pennsylvania is still too close to call. Trump is leading in votes, but Democrats are hopeful based on which districts have yet to report, mail-in votes, demographics, etc. Other states are close, and the winner in states like Michigan and NC isn't certain, but in their gut, most people (and both candidates) know that the election will come down to Pennsylvania.
At 9:50 pm, media outlets start reporting that Trump is planning to declare victory, even though no media outlets have called the election, and even though it appears likely that Kamala is actually in better shape than Trump. At 10 pm, Trump does indeed declare victory. Media outlets spend the next 90 minutes talking to Trump proxies about why they believe they have won and talking to their own election gurus about whether Trump's proxies are correct. Fox's election gurus hedge. Election gurus on NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, etc., say that Trump's declaration of victory is reckless at best and an attempt to manipulate public opinion at worst. The right-wing derposphere immediately begins spreading rumors that the Trump campaign has access to secret information that makes them certain that Trump has won. The left wing derposphere responds by saying that Trump is trying to "steal" the election by prematurely declaring victory. The right wing derposphere responds by saying that Democrats are the real election deniers. (The right wing ignores that Trump has been complaining for most of the day, and most of the last four years, that all elections are rigged against him.) No major media outlet call the election. There is speculation that Fox is under enormous pressure to call the election for Trump, but it does not do so.
By 11:30 pm, Kamala's campaign is worried that they are losing control of the narrative, even though Kamala is likely to win the election. They don't want the ongoing discussion of Trump's declaration of victory to delegitimize what they believe will be an eventual victory for Kamala. They hastily organize a response. Kamala stands in front of a cheering crowd and says that it appears highly likely that she has won the election. She stops short of declaring victory, but for all practical purposes, her statement is intended to be a declaration of victory and a counterpoint to Trump's earlier declaration of victory. At this point, both candidates effectively have said that they won the election, even though no major media outlet has called the election.
At some point the next morning (or even later, if the results in Pennsylvania are excruciating close), most major media outlets call the election for Kamala. Litigation bullshit ensues, but Kamala eventually is inaugurated.
I thought Biden handled it very well in 2020 after Trump held his presser and said we should have won big and frankly we did win. It was pretty clear Biden was very likely to win and he said we're in good shape but it's not my role to say who the winner is.

The spot which would make your scenario even more complicated, is if the determinant of the PA winner is how independents who vote by mail break (which could quite easily be the case)

Being rightwing, or indeed just being non-progressive, means combating that picture of how society should necessarily change through time without ever stopping looking back. It means realizing that not all change is positive and that some change can be drastically bad.
Ofc Takei lists stuff that has broad bipartisan support and that changed "for the good" (or at least, that most of us can agree changed for the good, because please remember, it's always arbitrary at the end).
He fails to mention stuff that got measurably worse (According to most people preferences) *and which is linked to the same ideology that allowed for the other actual progress*, like the unprecedented increase in mental illness , the unprecedented increase in solitude, the bottom low fertility rates, the dramatically reduced societal trust in institutions.

You can likethe fact that the state has enough power to send 10 agents to a private residence after getting an emergency warrant from a judge because of the exceptional possible crime of an undeclared squirrel being there.
Other people can disagree and consider that horrific, especially if the same government, on purpose, does nothing close to that for objectively far worse crimes

the state should regulate wildlife, yes. that isn't a particularly controversial opinion. the state also has an interest in domesticated animals having rabies vaccines. when libertarians are in charge towns get overrun by bears because they dont regulate simple things like trash and wildlife, because they have no idea how the world works.
