Ex was a vet-tech and dog lover. She had two different tripods, both lasted many years with only 3 legs. Dogs are remarkably resilient. Her pittie was used as an inspiration to the recovery group that met next door. She would play fetch for hours, tearing after balls in the lawn of the church where the group met.
On less happy news, our pack is down one. We had to let go of our girl Annie last week, and the hole left is devastating. She was a sweet girl.
Good luck to Super Pup!

hopefully that's a healthy and happy long term solution Johnny

That’s no good mate. What kind of pup was Annie?
Yes, GL to jots, and sorry for your loss to AzOther1
thanks for the wishes gents.
Venice is totally right to use the word 'milestone'. Grinding through all the stuff needed for separation really is a process and you don't have any option but to put your head down and keep moving through it, step by step. My hope and plan was to do everything I could to get through it all in 2024 so that 2025 could start with most/all of it in the rear view mirror.
I've done the biggest things (hopefully) by managing the kids through the first part of the break up, renovating the house to get ready for sale, working through future responsibilities and agreements for the kids, selling the house. Now I have to lock in the financial settlement with the ex and find a new place to live. The $$ agreement should be able to be locked in by the end of Nov, so long as her lawyer doesn't throw a spanner in the works and if I can find a house over the next few weeks that I like, I might be able to be in a new place and living that single life by the end of Jan
Annie was a rescue mutt (as are all dogs I've ever companioned with), we were told Boxer/Harrier mix, but she was bigger, +70 lbs. We've had her just over 10 years. She was the alpha female, dominating the younger male dog. Sweet as can be to her humans, scardy-dog otherwise (wind, thunder, fireworks, strangers, etc). Over the last couple of years, she's been going monthly to the vet for a shot to help her arthritis, and the vet techs and receptionist all fawn over how sweet she was to them, giving kisses and wanting attention. Unfortunately, about a month ago, she started having trouble breathing thru her nose. We tried antibiotics (2 kinds) steroids, etc with no positive results. We assume it was a tumor or mass, and operating on a 12yo rescue wasn't going to happen. It just kept getting worse and I feel a little guilty not calling it sooner.
It was still pretty heartbreaking last week.
We would spend hours together in the early morning, hanging out on the couch in the quiet while the rest of the pack (the Mrs and the other dog) slept in the bedroom. I'm going to miss her something awful.
Sorry for your loss, Az, and your pup's lost leg, jots. Sucks.
On a happier note, I also just had a milestone in a long cumbersome process. My editor just got back the second reader's review, and it recommends publication! I should be under contract for my book next month (inshallah), with tentative publication date next Fall.

Congrats Garick - you plan to do more in the future? I did two technical books (one managing a "collaboration" which resulted in rewriting most of the collaborator's stuff as well as my own, and one basically solo. Not sure I could go through that process (either one) again 😃
Thanks. It's definitely a long and cumbersome process. I'm on my third second reader right now, as the first ghosted the publisher and the second hadn't looked at my revisions I sent in April as of Sep 1st. When my editor prodded him, he said "I'm really busy right now, and don't know when I might be able to get to it." So she found a replacement. Thankfully, the replacement is both much faster and much more reasonable.
I plan to do one more academic book, which I've actually already started. I may write my memoirs after I retire, though I'm not sure how publishable they might be.
I've got three chapters written for three upcoming books as well. Definitely don't like the collab format much. A lot of work for not much credit.
Feely - when you get your new bachelor pad, can we start planning a lolStraya meet up?
Had my first games of the season with my 7th graders. I didn't clothesline any of them, although it was touch and go at times. JFC they do some dumb ****, even for 7th graders. We played ina round robin tourney and ended up with the nut low schedule - 3 straight games with no break. Middle game was supposed to be an easy one, but they were a select team playing under another program as a B team. We won the first 2 but got smoked by a good team in game 3 due to fatigue. Probably lose that one anyway this early in the season due to their size and style of play but it was a good test.
And I was more tired than the boys afterwards. Really time for Coach Skip to hang it up. I committed to this group until they finished 8th grade, but I may hand off to my assistant next season.
good posts all. On a negative note, one of the many annoying things about politics is the loss of election day. We won't be voting as a nation today and we won't know the winner at the end. I am telling myself I won't watch the news Tuesday night knowing the statistical noise will be irrelevant by Wednesday.
Happy Guy Fawkes Day, degens!
Skip, you’ve been ready to hang up the coaching boots and ready to quit your Gubmint job for the last decade!
Can’t wait til you’re 80 doing both still!
Congratulations, Garick. Let us know when you're published.
As for me, JFC.
In 2017, had a retinal tear, which caused me to be sent to specialist on an emergency basis. Everything came out ok. Since then, I've been making annual visits for check ups.
A couple years ago, I specifically asked him what the chances of recurrence were. He said none.
This doctor is pretty much as far as can be from my house and stay in the metro area. Also, not in-network, so I'd been paying cash each year.
This year, I was planning to ask why I'm coming down every year, when it's stable, and we never find anything interesting.
Had an appointment this morning. on the way down, get a low-pressure indication. Fortunately, there's a Subie dealer along the way, and they were able to fill the tires properly.
Get to the office, and am told, "oh, he's moved." Me; "Well, that would've been good information to have before I'd driven an hour-and-a-half." They had the new address, and it was only a couple miles away, so NBC after all.
Get there, go to the desk, they don't have me. Ask who I'm here to see, I say, "Dr. X:"
"Oh, he retired and sold the practice to us. A notice was mailed out in March." Me: "well, I didn't get it."
To her credit, the receptionist went and checked if they could squeeze me in, and found they could. While I'm sitting there waiting, the following thoughts occurred:
- I've never been comfortable driving back while dilated
- They're not in my network
- Frustrated by the miscommunication
- It's not an emergency; I should be able to find someone closer and in-network
- By squeezing in, I'm delaying other people who had real appointments
- It's been stable for years
After considering all these, decided to tell the receptionist to cancel. As I'm driving away, she calls and says, "if you want, the doctor could see you now." "No, I'm good."
Once I got back to my home area, went and got shingles shot #2 at my regular doctor. After that, stopped by Safeway because they had taters on sale.
Of course, they had none of the sale items. An amazingly common occurrence. But they can't figure out why they're going out of business.
On the plus side, it was a nice day for a drive. Stopped by some friends' place and went for lunch. Also got rid of some old trading cards I had laying around at a shop along the way, picked up a cool $10. Maybe paid for gas.
Pretty frustrating day. Hopefully not an omen of tonight's events.

I got admit that I went the absentee ballot route, but at least I had a good reason. I've been playing poker the last couple of days.
Sorry to hear about your frustration, golddog. I also had car trouble. Convertible top won't close. Gonna go work on that and try not to doom scroll the election.
**** cancer - best wishes to your pup.
When I worked in animal rescue (a lifetime ago) our agency took in an amazing pup who lost both of his back legs. He was chained in desert heat in a really unsafe environment and chewed off his legs to escape the situation. He was a great dog and found a great home.

Change my mind. I just voted in person (at the mortuary lol) and the line had more female 20 somethings that an any loud nightclub. Shoulda practiced some pickups_for_democracy.
So about my Harris wins Iowa bet...
