In other news
In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.
I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.
Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.
I lived in Southern California since 1962 In LA and OC counties... The Santa Ana's can whip up at almost anytime, though they are less likely when it is cold outside.
Meta will now allow to claim that LGBTQ+ abc people are mentally ill (if the poster thinks that the case), the only places online where that's not allowed yet are bluesky, democrat governed subreddit s, and 2+2
EDIT: to be clear I am not claiming or suggesting they are mentally ill, I am reporting on the different censorship regimes
I would be curious if the mayor attended the African was it Ghana political appointment inauguration on the city's dime or her own
probably federal, it seems that biden asked her to go
I fear this is mosly wellwishing on his part.
Regulations kill people regularly and destroy wellbeing massively and are often written exclusively to benefit a small number of insiders against everyone else on purpose, but this is so obvious and well known to everyone who observes reality that it's not about "wops i didn't realize it yet" on the side who people who still vote democrats and still love regulations.
They are probably simply among those who benefit from the regulations if they are rich
There are also tons of outlying areas around our cities around the country where lack of good regulation/planning has created completely over-populated/over-developed trainwrecks. Overall quality of life sucks compared to what it used to be and you can't go anywhere without constant horrible traffic.

if random cities created recently in an innovative country don't die sometimes , you aren't risking enough.
the whole idea of America is to leave the shackles and constrains of Europe behind.
you can always vacation to our living museums with your excess money which you make because you risk more and aren't afraid of getting something wrong and move on to rebuild better at times.
everytime you move toward the European model a small portion of the American dream dies.
btw the vast majority of your urban planning problems are linked to zoning, which is regulation.
I just wonder with these fires in California whether they have been keeping up with their fire management over there. Particularly, planned burns to reduce the extent of the impact of fires and whether they haven't for ecological reasons.
not enough water.
and apparently there is a very significant role played by electric utility companies, which in this case would be PG&E, because they are supposedly legally tasked to cut down vegetation nearby electric lines (see? the rare reasonable regulation ! which ofc doesn't work anyway because the regulator is in bed with the regulated) because it is well known sparks from those are what start many/most wildfires (not climate change).
And take a wild guess which politicians in California are paid and bought by that company?
yes! them

And may I ask too - whether there was any impact from the ban of fuel maintenance equipment over there (chainsaws, brushcutters, etc). Also, fuel generators weren't banned were they?

Yeah where I am they cut the power in advance. They actually haven't this time but last month SDG&E cut the power to like 50,000 people in east San Diego county ahead of the winds and brought in a backup generator to power where I live (and then flew helicopters around to check all the lines before restoring the regular grid) and I'm surprised that the same sorts of precautions wouldn't be taken in LA.

Frontline just did an episode on the Maui fire this week. The firefighters sat there for 6hrs dumping water on the 1st extinguished fire and it reignited after they left. Almost no amount of water was stopping this disaster with the wind and fuel conditions.
Breaking news, southern California is a fire prone area and sometimes man cannot overcome mother nature.
Latest fire investigated as possible arson after locals detain suspect
The latest fire in LA is being investigated as a possible arson, it is understood.
A number of citizens detained someone in the West Valley area, close to where the flames are burning.
Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department are looking into whether that individual was responsible for the Kenneth fire, Sky News's US affiliate, NBC, is reporting.
Detectives are also looking into possible connections with other fires in the area.
Yes, I was just replying to you in this particular case of fires in southern California. It's a bit odd to get Santa ana's in Jan but probably not the 1st time and it's just historically a fire prone area.
Santa Ana winds are common Sept thru Feb, in particular during dry periods when high pressure systems get stuck nearby in the Pacific or over the Great Basin.
The dry season in LA is typically June thru October. When they coincide with Santa Ana winds fire risk is greatest. But dry periods in Dec-Feb are not uncommon, and high fire risks are noteworthy then as well.
Low pressure systems off the coast produce Eddy flows and light to moderate rain. This is basically the opposite of a Santa Ana condition.

Oh the idea Is the area would be a tad less fire prone if water wasn't removed to grow strawberries elsewhere
Joe Biden at the fire presser
Mumble mumble Madame Vide president why don’t you fire away … no pun intended
How excited are you right now at the prospect of your country becoming a colonial possession of the US?
I’m not to worried as Trumps bluffing . You’re telling me Trumps putting a 25 % tariff on 640,000 barrels of oil Canada exports to the USA . Also Canada is a leader in construction supplies like lumber and concrete . My guess is you’re going to need a ton of that in California . Let’s not forget electricity.
Now an economic union and Canada adapting the US $ I’m all for

Well it seems kinda wasteful. Do you think she bought her own ticket and hotel? Was the jet solar powered? Is there any benefit to her constituents? Seems rather ill advised.
Given the tone of civil discourse recently, I'm surprised that there aren't more people celebrating the number of celebrities who have lost residences to the fires in the last 72 hours.
Depends on the celebrity.
James Woods is getting roasted left and right, no pun intended.
Many of the other notable names affected are friendly to the crowd most likely to be dancing on the ashes of their lives, so it makes sense that you don't see a lot of Nelson-laughing.
The threads I've seen where a lot of this pointing and laughing is taking place have a bunch of people reminding the mob that many mere mortals are completely and utterly ****ed as well, so maybe go easy on the celebrating. Those people are being ignored.
Imagine how many old people who have just lived in these areas for 50+ years, have the house paid off and limited income, are now staring down the barrel of a rebuild with no money to do it with. It's not like every single one of these houses belonged to an A-list celeb. Probably very few of them, in fact.
I don't know how legit the narrative that the insurance companies dropped most of these homeowners in the last 18 months is, but I can absolutely see myself being put in a position where my insurance company drops coverage and I procrastinate on getting replacement. I love me some procrastination.
