In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

I thought you said I was the one with a disconnect from reality

min. wage is 16.50. If someone works 5 hours over time (many work a lot more) it's already 45K/yr.

Ho my god can you read and talk about the video ?
We were talking about a 7.50$ an hour for minimum wage ok !
That is in the freakn video …
Then the guy spoke about those minimum wages should take into account local and state level so that is why he disagree to raise nationwide the minimum wage !

Again I said I agree with the theory but if that theory hold , it should hold with tax cut as well which they don’t care .
AND THAT didn’t make sense because it both affect wages u got it now ?

Furthermore whotf care about your 16$ an hour and whotf care if we raise 7.50$ to 10$ or 12$ an hour if it’s already at 16$ in some state ….

And 15$ an hour it still light years away of 50k …
What world you live in man ….

Now fwiw

All the poorest state are still at 7.5$ an hour and they will stay poor at that hourly rate , especially with the inflation they got .

Anyway just stick to the main point -> if raising minimum wages is bad on nationwide level , it surely should be on tax cutting too .
But obviously hypocritically they don’t because those in power don’t care about helping people ….especially in red states .

And again , it isn’t just about 16 years old working about McDonald like you believe ….

Are you really so ****ing dumb that you can’t multiply 2000 hours x $16.50 an hour to determine the annual income of a minimum wage worker?

Just in case: it’s $33,000.

You sure they wouldn't want those jobs at the salary those jobs would clear the market at, absent all immigration? If cutting grass in rich people houses pays 18/hour some people will take that. And if no one does it would pay 20, ,22, 25, At some price Americans would do it.

And that would be the actual real cost of it absent subsidies for the rich to import poor people who cost taxpayers in welfare massively throughout their lives

True but those jobs are very limited and minimum wages for example do not target that fringe of society .

Those same people cutting grass at 20$+ an hour wouldn’t work in a farm field at 8$ an hour , regardless the immigration level .

according to montrealcorp, Egypt could raise the minwage to $200/hour and become the richest country on earth.

exactly this, it's wild how the "compassionate position" is no different than what happens in the gulf states

or stop taking low skilled immigrants in completely for some time, and deport everyone who illegally enters, and those jobs will only pay what Americans are willing to take to work them (definitionally).

There is a caveat , remember what they do when they pay too high a cost ?
They transfer in other countries or transfer to robotics or simply close ….

Again the private sector is there to make money on exploiting the workers or the costumers , it isn’t there to play fair game and take care of the people lol .
That’s the government job/mission (usually but not in the U.S. )

Those states are mostly monarchies.
Kinda hard to use to compare with the U.S.

But yes the US are becoming like that thx to an oligarchy turn in the system .
And putting billionaires as president won’t change that …

See those kinda of strawman is a reason why people don’t take you seriously.

That brick is company property. Can't be using that **** as a pillow!

Can you summarize the video so I know what the point is you are trying to make

It appears EcoHealth Alliance (EHA) has been formally banned by HHS for a period of 5 years following scrutiny over its work in Wuhan, China ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic. Also, EHA's president, Peter Daszak, was terminated from EcoHealth a week ago.

"Justice for the American people was served today," said Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) in a statement.

"EcoHealth Alliance and its corrupt former President, Dr. Peter Daszak, were formally debarred by HHS for using taxpayer funds to facilitate dangerous gain-of-function research in China. Today’s decision is not only a victory for the U.S. taxpayer, but also for American national security and the safety of citizens worldwide."

"Given that a lab-related incident involving gain-of-function research is the most likely origin of COVID-19, EcoHealth and its former President should never again receive a single cent from the U.S. taxpayer," Comer continued.

Well, increase the minimum wage then so people want those jobs.

BUT THAT'S SOCIALISM!

Min wage considerations fail to understand what the people a little over min wage currently will think.

It's not only about raising someone from x to y. It's everyone who currently makes $3o more than the worst possible salary because he does a little more , a little better, than them, asking ... Ok so if the random utter bullshit person who just walked in with no qualification or experience makes 10, I have to make 13-15 not 11 right?

And it escalates to the WHOLE paycheck structure.

It doesn't have to. That only happens because of greed at the executive level.

Average CEO: minimum wage ratio is orders of magnitude higher than it was.

There's far more to a company's pay table than CEO and everybody else.

The job of a CEO is much harder now than it was in 1978 because they have more regulations to deal with, so they deserve to earn more. Workers have more of a social safety net than they used to. It's only fair for the pay gap to widen.

So much wrong here.

When did that stop anybody from raising the minimum wage?

What do you think the minimum wage should be set to so that Americans will do that work?

Above my pay grade. I'll leave that up to the decision makers so they don't need to illegally import millions of people, and deprive American workers jobs that they could have filled.

I honestly don't understand the mindset of the non-wealthy right.

We have a tremendous amount of wealth and power in our country and yet we not only concentrate that at the top, we don't seem to be satisfied. We seem to want the rich to be richer and the powerful to become even more powerful. I don't see how this benefits anyone but a very small group of people.

That small group of people will always work for their self interest and yet we are not just ok with it, but we continue to want them to be more and more powerful.

It sort of feels like the Russia model.

The people making this argument are the same people that are staunchly against any minimum wage requirements.

TBH I don't know anybody who is happy guys like Bill Gates, George Soros, Elon Musk, etc have essentially unfettered power at their disposal via basically unlimited funds.

Which argument, minimum wage, or illegal importing of foreigners?

Well, generally the "non-wealthy" are all convinced the other side is trying to take wealth from them and transfer it to someone else. And they would rather wealthy people on "their side" gets the wealth (which they perceive right or wrong will eventual trickle down) then having it permanently transferred to the other side.

You underestimate how much all the focus on racial and gender equity plays into the hands of wannabe oligarchs.

There is also the more high content economical argument that free markets create wealth for all, and socialism makes everyone poorer. But I dont think that is what is driving most poor people to support people like Trump and Musk.

It is wild to see the degree to which simping to billionaires has become the rally cry

It’s even more head scratching watching the bernie bros now get satisfaction that daddy Elon has all the power
