Winter LC Thread: Get More HOT Chicks

Maybe warm chicks will suffice, even lukewarm. Hell, even those with a slight chill.

Always a joy to see what you and Merle refer to as Manly Footwear.

Posted this pic of me on FB. I was introducing my writing class to the semiotics of fashion, so I dressed a little differently than usual. Favorite comment : "****ing icon." I'll take it. Sent from my Pixel 7a using Tapatalk

Semiotics is serious.

It's mid-term time, so only eight weeks to go until the four months off for the summer.

That's why I keep working. It's 30 weeks a year, and I would be bored to death if I retired.

Anybody retired out there? How is it?

There was a thread posted "which is the worst movie you ever had to watch."

Can one of you take a screenshot and post? I want to see what the thread looks like after I delete it.

Retirement is great, but you've correctly identified one of the potential problems.

For the first month or so, it's great to sleep in, laze around, whatever. But that gets boring pretty quickly.

Have some idea of what you want to do to fill your days in retirement before pulling the plug.

At the same time, don't keep working just to keep working. At some point, one has enough resources. (This last point probably doesn't apply to John, who has said he really loves his work. But, for most of us that work is a grind, don't keep going just to accumulate more wealth.)

I had to look that up... Is there where the term Semiphore comes from?

I can Confirm this ^...

I am in my final retirement after going thru two Semi-retirements in my late 20's and mid 40's. I am drawing my SS and it ain't much I can tell you as I chose to go for the early 62 draw down.

when I was younger, my plan was to hang out at the courthouse and witness trails and court cases because I find human behavior and motivations quite interesting.

Semiotics deals with the ways signs function. So, semiotics can be used to analyze fashion, or food, or films, or any number of things. Just one example: Obama appears in the campaign trail wearing a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. Most of us know what that means, but not everyone will.

Roland Barthes is the philosopher most closely associated with semiotics.

Semaphore has the same root as semiotics.

You know what? Even though I know horoscopes are bullshit, I still read mine when I see it. Why? I don't know the answer to that.

I'm the same way about reading chicken entrails.

Ah, French philosophers.

I wonder how close Semiotic is to Delusion.

To me, they would seem to be inexorably intertwined... all signs point to yes.

you must have loved M. Shyamalan's film then.

Ah, French philosophers.

I like Barthes. He's easier to understand than say Foucault or Derrida, although I don't think they are impenetrable either. See Mythologies for Barthes at his clearest.

See my example of Obama rolling up his sleeves. Or Mitt Romney campaigning in a flannel shirt. How do these function as cultural signs?

Remember Obama wearing a tan suit?

Signaling ^... or, in most instances, Virtue Signaling.

One (Semiotic), appears to be 'Broadcasting'... in an attempt to illicit an appropriate response

The other (Delusion), appears to be 'Interpreting'... in an attempt to makes sense thereof.

I see entanglement to be sure.

if one is trying to 'signal' a thought, feeling or response while portraying something that isn't quite real... delusion is the result.

IF someone signals you:

your thoughts might be to jump in the air or to take and airplane, when in reality they might be trying to tell you your pants are unzipped.

Don't knock taking a flight with your pants unzipped until you've tried it.

or they're telling you to hit the F6 key and type ly in the address bar
today you find out they love you

Out for my morning errands. Walked past a standalone Wells Fargo ATM, with a police car parked close to it.

When I get closer, I see the door is swung open, and the face is swung up. Looks like vandalism has come to Broomfield.
