Netflix "Watch Instantly"
I just recently rejoined Netflix and was pleased to see they have added a "Watch Instantly" feature where you can stream a movie over the internet. The selection of movies/shows is subpar, but it's free baby! Well, free as in no extra charge. You can watch 1 hour for every dollar/month your subscription is and it doesn't affect your queued/shipped movies at all. Minuses are that you have to be running Windows and Internet Explorer, but the quality is great! I have a garbage laptop, but it looks the same as a DVD to me and it hasn't skipped/paused/hiccuped once so far.
I started Ripley last night. Liking it a lot. It probably helps that I only have the very vaguest memories of the movie. I didn't realize there are actually 5 books about that character. I may have to put those on my reading list. Anyone read the books?
holy wtf to that yellowjackets ending
also severance back on track this week
I finished 'Cassandra" last night. I enjoyed the unique low-budget 70's feel. It was also interesting to see a german's perspective of TV production and story telling.
Entertaining AI horror!

The Ripley books are all-time classics. I tend to reread them every five years or so. The show is damn good, too.
The wife and I watched all four episodes of Adolescence yesterday and thought it was great. It's just four episodes but each episode is shot with one camera in one take. Would like to know how they do that.
If there is better TV than this so far this year, I would like to see it.
Just finished a super binge of Narcos and Narcos Mexico. Pedro Pascal to Diego Luna, to complete death and destruction. Sad, Grim, Bleak.
Something about Narcos Mexico never really hit for me. Felt like a knockoff.
The three seasons of Narcos are stellar, though. I actually enjoyed the third season more than the rise/fall of Escobar.

I’ve heard it’s a very heavy show. The word “devastating” was used so I’m hesitant but intrigued.
I started The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey last night. Pretty great. Started at 10pm thinking I'd watch one episode before bed. Couldn't stop. 4 episodes later I finally made myself stop as I had things to do this morning and didn't want to be sleeping til noon.
Alright so I got through the first ep of Adolescence and I'm not sure what's going on. That was boring as hell. Am I supposed to keep going or not?

Seems like the show is done from the parent's perspective - more specifically the dad's. You know as much as he does. You don't know what's going on and neither does he. It's not even clear what crime was committed until well into the first episode.
The third episode is the best in my opinion as it's kind of like a "My Dinner with Andre" type thing where it's just an hour of him talking to a psychiatrist that was brought in by the defense.
It's not a police procedural show if you are expecting that.
The acting is phenomenal especially that of the boy.

it's next on my list and I've heard it's awesome, but I'm kind of concerned about watching it, given I have 3 teenagers
I'm super pumped about Mobland on Paramount +, which launches in Australia at the end of the month. Not even a terrible Pierce Brosnan accent in the trailer can dampen my enthusiasm
speaking of Paramount+ and I know it's old, but I'm grinding through season 2 of Mayor of Kingstown. I loved season 1, which had basically all my favourite themes...a fixer, gangs, a super evil villain and a load of prison settings. Season 2 has been a harder watch but I'm still engaged enough to get to the end. Not sure I'll commit to season 3 though as I'm assuming it gets worse

What a miracle of filmmaking. Bravo Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne.
The 3rd episode with Jamie and the psychologist was astounding. Owen Cooper deserves every acting award known to man. And he was 13 in his first role ever? Hell, everyone deserves plaudits, from the cops to the girl who was best friends with the victim, to the prison guards to the teachers...everyone. Especially the camera crew.
I kind of wish the scene in the 2nd episode when the cop and his son goes for fish and chips was at the end, because it was something nice lol.
That last episode, tho. Holy cow, It broke something inside me. I don't have children and never will, but I cannot imagine going through something so horrible. Graham as the dad, Christine Tremarco as the mom, and Amélie Pease as the daughter...I'm astounded they rehearsed and shot that episode as many times as they did, all the way through, with one shot and no breaks. Reaching into that well of pure emotion and grief and strength. Trying to find a bit of happiness on the dad's 50th birthday as the boy awaits trial in prison.
I was just talking to my GF about this, and we both agreed how lucky we were not to have to grow up in the time of social media and asshats like Andrew Tate. I couldn't imagine having to negotiate adolescence today, with your whole life out there for everyone to see and comment on.
Anyway, this is a must watch. I'm going to make it an assignment for my students to do so. But it is a hard watch. Especially that last episode. Maybe showing it, talking about it, will somehow make it better one day. I don't know.
Fu*k.
Pierce Brosnan is Irish
The residence is entertaining. Binged 3/4 of it so far.
The basketball one about the la waves is also good dumb fun.
I haven't got to the Severance Season 2 finale yet, but just saw it's been renewed for Season 3.
