I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

The former is insider trading, the latter is market manipulation. Both are illegal.

Unless you're a politician, then you can do it

We live in a country whose richest man is directly and heavily involved in multiple areas of government -- including pushing through policies he thinks will help him personally, firing thousands of workers, and, in general, causing mass misery -- all while being unelected -- and you're sitting here talking about Nancy F Pelosi

Pelosi and Musk are both crooks, but on utterly different levels. Ten thousand Pelosis couldn't do the damage one Musk has done. But, of course, Musk drops based memes about shitcoins and Nancy doesn't, so you like him and hate her.

To be fair, if you don't have immediate exposure to the markets, this just seems like a bunch of hair-on-fire fearmongering by "the rich".

Not all, but most things your median income citizen requires in life have viable USA alternatives that won't really be affected much by the tariffs. Lower-income citizens are even less affected. If this results in much less Chinesium trash cluttering peoples' houses, then it's probably a good thing.

It's an extremely bad time to be a white collar importer or highly-paid exec who led the offshoring of business operations. If you're already priced out of the current economy, you couldn't care less.

Though, I still haven't seen anyone put up the ELI5 case for the endgame of these tariffs. What, exactly, am I buying with the enormous sums of money I've lost in the last 5 days?

You can't just spin up a million manufacturing plants overnight in the USA, but I live in Milwaukee and every morning I drive through the ghetto and see dozens of shuttered buildings that used to create things along my specific route. The biggest of which is probably the Master Lock property on 30th & Center St. That finally closed for good a few years ago and took several hundred jobs with it. How long would it take to put it back in service if Chinese locks are no longer viable? If that's the goal, then say so, and maybe show your work so we aren't all sitting here making up our own doomsday scenarios.

Honestly, I'm pretty satisfied that you have to actually interact with the poor on some level before you can continue to exploit them. The business leaders you simp for can press a couple of buttons on a phone in their skyscraper and immiserate the poor in full safety.

Don't worry, I'm here in the trenches.

Homeless people use the outlet in my covered entryway to watch porn on their phones on the weekends, and my house has caught stray bullets from the riffraff shooting at each other at 2am every day. I'm on the waiting list for a penthouse in the ivory tower, but it's not looking good.

I don't think the US produces much coffee.

Good job tho.

Number goes down, wealth gap to decreases, but OMG recession.

Lol at your reetarded ass thinking a few centibillionaires losing 10-20% means the wealth gap decreased.

They should make better locks, then. Bro, have you even seen lockpickinglawyer on youtube?

I have, yeah. But it's hard to save up for better tech when China is eating your lunch every day.

Depends on your definition of "stuff." weeeez mentioned coffee, and I've actually never had any coffee, but I can't think of much else that I really need or want to eat that can't be sourced from North America. I personally think picking fights with Canada and Mexico is quite dumb. Neighbors should be neighborly.

Not all stuff is the same. I will actively try to avoid Chinese garbage if I can easily buy American. I've personally witnessed China putting a friendly US partner out of business via IP theft. They get away with it because they flood the market with low-cost knockoff garbage and most people just don't know any better. It's terrible what they've been allowed to get away with.

Sure, brah. You can buy an American phone, but here you are typing this on your Chinese phone.

You can't avoid Chinese stuff and most of the things you are buying aren't simple things like iron ore or some such and are composed of components which come from all over. And China is not the only other country in the world. It's not even the biggest source of imports.

The people at the Foxconn factory may well be better off leaving the city and being subsistence farmers in the Chinese countryside, but dunno if Americans want those jobs and to be jumping out of windows themselves or they want to pay $3k for a cell phone either. I'm not that far from a back to the Earth Luddite myself, so whatever, but just lol at the Republicans trying to twist this into something good economically for business or workers in the USA.

My phone was made in Vietnam.

I have never, and will never, own an Apple device. Though, I'm typing this on a computer with some parts that were almost certainly made in China, so there's that...

Edit: Actually, my phone might've been made in South Korea.

I don't want to hear you crying about Apple; I want to know why you didn't buy a Purism phone. You said you buy American whenever you easily can, but that's apparently bullshit.

I have a ZTE that I bought in Colombia. Not even allowed to be sold in the US it's so Chinese

46% tariff on stuff from Vietnam
25% on South Korea

Maybe you should buy a North Korean phone.

by FreakDaddy k

Because I don't hate having money in my pocket.

And I don't own a Purism phone because I've never heard of them until just now. I've had three smartphones in the last 14 years and I'm only on year 2 of this current one. In 2030 when it's time to retire this one, I'll be sure to check on the reviews for Purism's latest offerings.
