have you guys listened to the new kanye drop?

My guess is that this is the wrong thread for Kanye listeners

My congratulations to Queen Spew as well. My spinal surgery scheduled for July sounds much less involved, but I'm hoping the run good continues.

Congrats to Queen Spew!

+1

House dilemma solved. Someone else already bought it.

So you've narrowed down your retirement area?

Good guess, imo.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the Queen.

Garick, condolences or congratulations on missing the house, whichever are in order.

Good luck - what do you need to get done?

Surgeries are over. Phew.My wife had "cages" installed between two lower vertebrae on Tuesday and then today, they went back in and "tied them in". Think screen door hinge (only much smaller) in a circle with the spinal cord running through. Interesting thing about the first day: a neurologist hook her up with a series of electrodes all over her head that monitored the spina

missed this, sounds like things went well, hope the recovery goes well as well

I've got spinal stenosis which is pinching a nerve. Basically the surgeon is going to separate a couple vertebrae and lock them in place.

Which part of spine?

Hope it goes well

Prayers sent. Sciatica, or related stuff, is the WOAT.Senior Walking couldn't shower without our help when it hit him. I figure I will get hooked on pills in the first day. I heard about that type of cage surgery, really hope it works out.

The back.

Thx guys. Means a lot to me.

Setbacks abound. Two days of sticking around in the hospital due to nausea. Hope she gets parole tomorrow.

Happy Memorial Day all.

Interesting tax structure. We do have something a bit similar, but it doesn't apply directly to the tax, just as an adjustment to income. And even that's not direct. So if (for simple math's sake) I made 100K/yr and lost 10k/yr on the house, I would make 90k/yr taxable, right? Not so fast. There are caps on how much business loss you can deduct from your income, that vary b

I'm awaiting the release of the new Alan Sparhawk album tomorrow so I can download some songs for free onto my iPod because I am a dinosaur.

Sure I got some of that wrong, or at least oversimplified. I just know that I don't get bupkis advantage for the money I lose on the house I bought for my dad.

In other news, I made Associate Professor today (well, actually on the 20th, but found out about it today.). Pretty cool. I'm the first active duty prof to accomplish that in many years, I'm told.

That is a major accomplishment. Is it like regular academia where you are now tenured?

Congrats on the professorship Garick. Does that mean you could stay on in that role after active duty assuming you so desired? And would you want to?

Thanks for the kind words everybody.

To your questions:

Is it like regular academia where you are now tenured?

No. We don't have regular tenure here. If I were a civilian, the length of my reappointment contracts would go up, and I'd get a raise. But as a military member, not so much.

does that mean you can kill enemy academics?

That came with the Assistant Professorship. But now I can get assistants to accompany me on raids.

Does that mean you could stay on in that role after active duty assuming you so desired?

It would certainly help. They were putting out feelers about my interest already, but I'm sure this would be a big leg up, and means I would get paid more if I did it.

And would you want to?

No. I love this job, but I don't love Montgomery Alabama. If they move the school north a couple hundred miles, I'd be all for it.

In other good news, the other guy who's name starts with the same letter as mine brought my credit card back to the brewery.

Went to check out last night, and they couldn't find my card in the rolodex of open tabs. Turns out they'd given my card to the wrong guy when he checked out. Fortunately, he had a pretty unique name, and the staff was able to find him on Facebook and alert him to come trade cards. Unfortunately, he didn't see it until this morning, so I have to drive back up to get my card.

Associate Professor. I’m impressed.

Yeah G!

Congrats Garick
