New Draft Idea: Fake Bands/Musicians From Movies/TV

The performers in this film did work together before making the movie, but the film itself is fiction. A busker on the streets of Dublin, whose full time job is repairing vacuum cleaners, meets a young woman who longs for a musical career.

I love these heartfelt small films that often go unnoticed on first release. A great John Carney film.

I’d allow it.

With my third pick I’m taking Schroeder & The Peanuts Gang! Like Springsteen did when he got back to Jersey from Cali, Schro got back from Julliard, called a meeting, and told the boys (and girls and dog and birds), “I’m the star here”.

The piano, standup bass, sax/mouth harp-tuner round out my current band, and there are TWO drummers, to allow for some Allman Bros-Bitches Brew-Butthole Surfers jamming.

Plus a children’s choir for the spooky voodoo stuff, with Woodstock & his friends keeping watch on the vampires from the trees.

The Barden Bellas - Pitch Perfect(s)

The Pitch Perfect movies are a pure joy to watch. And the main character of these movies are the Bardon Bellas. A couple of weeks ago I posted in the music thread how much I loved vocal harmonies. These movies have that in spades! I can watch this stuff anytime I come across and can't stop until its over.

Band: Eddie & the Cruisers

Great, shaggy dog mystery movie about a Jim Morrison-like figure named Eddie who supposedly died in a car wreck at the height of band's fame in the 60s...but his body was never found. Is he still alive? Ellen Barkin is trying to finds out by interviewing all Eddie's former bandmates and friends.

It's a fun movie...but what makes the movie is the music. John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band do all the music in a Springsteen pastiche, and Michael Pare does a fantastic job as the titular Eddie. It's a corny movie, but man, is the music fun.

There is a whole genre of Japanese movie about outcast high school girls who find redemption by forming or joining bands. My next two picks are two of my favorites:

PARA MAUM In Linda Linda Linda -- a seminal Japanese Punk song.

and, the

SWING GIRLS in Swing Girls with its bad girls in a fun and incomprehensible plot.

A bunch of Irish musicians want to play the Blues. Just a fun, amazing movie, with some of the best unknown musicians on the planet and directed by the massively underrated Alan Parker. Glen Hansard makes his second appearance in this draft after John Cole picks him in Once.

Spectacular songs, of course...but even more spectacular performances - especially by Andrew Strong, the singer in the below clip.

Much like Alice Cooper’s friendship with Keith Moon, the well-named Lazarus is the only musician in the draft who can hang with IVB, both onstage and off, and live to tell the tales.

Sam is a musician in the movie. So he counts. Someone like Julie Andrews in the Sound Of Music would not count. Any performance in a musical would not count UNLESS that character is a musician in the movie.

Mitch and Mickey - A Mighty Wind

Eugene Levy and Catherine OHara are fantastic as Mitch and Mickey This was a tough call as I was tempted to just take the entire cast of this movie as the whole thing is a fake bandapalooza. Not sure that would be within the rules? But I took M&M because Levy is at his comedic best in this role and cracks me up every time he is on screen.

Of course the creators of this movie are likely the best known "fake" band trio ever. Their initial fake band blew up so huge it it resulted in albums and tour dates. Definitely undraftable due to the Monkees rule 😀
