I believe the following two things can be true at the same time:
1. A large majoirity of the protestors are there to protest and not cause harm to anyone.
2. A few bad hombres caused trouble that caused a riot.
My position seems to me to be the common sense position.

With regards to the .9 and 1 proofs.
The division / appeal to 1/3 multiplied by 3 is wrong, it implies that infinite addition and multiplication work the same as finite addition and multiplication, which they do not. It's almost begging the question.
The geometric series proof is the most elegant while being mathematically 100% correct.
The squeeze theorem proof is an appeal to intuition, and as chez pointed out, doesn't work in all number systems, in particular those including infinitesimals. But it's fun.
Personally, when I start to explain this to people, I find it helpful to show first of all that in our decimal system, there are multiple ways of writing the same number. For example, 2, 30/15ths and 4/2nds all represent the same number. Once someone's mind is open to the fact that it is possible to write the same number in different ways, the rest is just, as they say, painting by numbers.
I think "confrontational dialogue" is great. I engage in that type of dialogue often myself. By its very nature, a Politics Forum is confrontational.
Maybe this is a new concept for some, but it is possible to be confrontational without being hysterical..

I should add that generally, whenever you see an ellipsis in a proof, it's not a proof. You can use those to prove that 1=2 or 1=0 or whatever. Syntactically, there is nothing about an ellipsis that belongs in any proof. So, a statement like "0.333..... multiplied by" is meaningless. It means nothing.
It's like asking "what is the next number in the sequence 2,4,8,16?". For one pattern, 2^n, it's 32. For another pattern, the maximum number of crossings between lines with n being the number of points on the circumference of a circle, it's 31.
0.3333... is the sum from one to infinity of 3/10^n. You can multiply that by 3 and see that the sum of 9/10^n from 1 to infinity is 1.
