Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Speaking of Eisenberg and great final scenes—as well as a fantastic debut and a GGGR worthy speech—it’s probably time to rewatch Roger Dodger after 23 years.

kinda want to make room for gone girl on my list now, same with adaptation
a few hard disagrees here, a bunch of films were interesting but not good - take boyhood - no real plot or anything, once the novelty wears thin it's gone
Of the ones I've seen, there are only a few I don't really like that much: Phantom Thread, Roma, A Serious Man, inside Lewyn Davis, and Grizzly Man.
I can see why others like them, but for whatever reason, they didn't do it for me.
Weird, because I'm a huge fan of those filmmakers.
Uhg! I saw 73. None of them would make my personal top 100. That is one horseshit list. But it's gotta be since 2000 right (nothing old)? Anyway most of those movis are unwatchable dreck.

I have 89. The one I recommend without reservation that I have a feeling most of you haven't seen is Toni Erdmann.

I really liked the setting and cinematography of Under The Skin but not much else. Didn’t hate it, was probably expecting something different, was drunk too.
A Prophet sounds pretty intense.

F1 The Movie
Great summer blockbuster. You already know how the story goes before the movie starts, and Brad Pitt is... Brad Pitt. Perfectly fine for the role, but I don't know if he did much acting here. Charismatic as ever, though. The racing scenes are amazing and, along with the Hans Zimmer soundtrack, make it worth seeing on the big screen.
A bit too long, and I would have liked to learn more about his gambling past and his father, would have served the story better emotionally.
Certainly looks like one of the most expensive movies ever. Rush is still the best movie in the genre.

I've seen both and both are good. Haven't seen Fish Tank, Y tu mama tambien, which I should probably rectify, Ron Burgandy (huh?), and that Almodavar one. Don't remember the others I've missed.

I find it completely unimaginable to try and corral 10 films in the last 26 years into a 'best of' list... that list would constantly be changing, evolving and reshuffling.
but as of today, and today only, the list would look something like this:
1- Amores Perros: Alejandro G. Iñárritu
2- Departures: Yôjirô Takita
3- Spirited Away: Hayao Miyazaki
4- The Royal Tenenbaums: Wes Anderson
5- Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Ang Lee
6- The Master: Paul Thomas Anderson
7- Lost In Translation: Sofia Coppola
8- Sideways: Alexander Payne
9- Ex Machina: Alex Garland
10- Eastern Promises: David Cronenberg
good list, really considered tenenbaums, the master, & ex machina when i did mine
but i thought eastern promises was incredibly boring
biggest takeaway when i made the list was that i've seen very few movies post-covid
This aggression for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will not stand, man. Can you imagine where action movies would be without that film? I rewatched it recently and it holds up incredibly well. It was on my short list but didn't quite make it.
Here's my watched/unwatched. A few surprises in there maybe. Funny thing is the unwatched ones, I either own a blu-ray copy or have them on digital.
Y'all really need to treat yourself to Toni Erdmann. It's something special.
