For those of you with a lot of life experience: I’d love to hear your thoughts on love, marriage, and raising kids. Do you think there’s an ideal timing or stage of life for these things, or does it just depend on the person? I would say the happiest men I know are committed family men. However, you can't force it. Starting a family with the wrong person can create a nightmare. And not everyone is cut out to be a parent. I wish I had kids, but the grass is pretty good on this side too. I have a lot of freedom and try to make the most of it.
A pretty big majority of the guys I know in happy LTRs are with I guess non-Western women. No, they aren't manosphere PUA types. Most of them are lefty/lib and didn't plan it that way. No the women aren't submissive street urchins who fan them while they eat grapes. Many are successful, intelligent professionals. One of my friends is a house husband to his African wife. My theory/experience is that they view relationships more as a two way street where both partners should work to make the other happy. In some cases, their own culture is highly male chauvinist, so if you treat them with respect you are a breath of fresh air. Of course, there are good and bad partners in all cultures.
It's good to have a well rounded partner with outside interests, some of which you might share and some of which you might not. If someone is only interested in his or her personal life and consumer culture, I think that leads to suffocation and drama.
if you like witty yet absurd comedies - super troopers is on the mount rushmore of that genre - incredibly good film and massive disappointment that comedy troupe was never able to quite capture that same lightning in a bottle again
I would put Beerfest up there with Super Troopers.
Super Troopers 2 was awful, and a naked cash grab though.
Curious for those of you that are or have been married — how did you meet your life partners?
We met at church. Through my GF at the time.
The GFs parents (pastors themselves) got relocated halfway across Canada and she went with them so it became long distance (this is the late 90s). The GF assigned my now wife to “keep an eye on me and make sure he goes engagement ring shopping that summer”.
The GF dumped me that November for a mortician and she’s had 4 kids and never lost an ounce of baby weight and probably tips the scales at 300+.
My wife and I started dating a couple months later. Dated for 10 months, engaged for 10 months, now married over 26 years with 2 sons, 22 & 19. The 19 year old is a 2 time world champion in karate.
My wife at 49 is still hot as hell and we are still insane about each other. And yes I life-brag because poker hasn’t been anything to brag about lately. I have PURE partner run good and that makes life pretty awesome.

Timing is funny man. Life puts the people in front of you at the weirdest times. Just gotta grab them and hold on.
I hope my kids learn from what they saw growing up.

agreed, after i posted that i was wondering if i wasn't giving beerfest its due
haven't even seen club dread because everyone i know who saw it said it's terrible but i will see it anyway - slammin salmon was terrible - a made for tv movie type thing - those guys have some extreme variance in their output
i enjoyed 2 it for the cash grab that it was though - this scene stays with me 😀
as stated - i'm probably one of the few who enjoyed it - probably because i've played so much hockey with french canadians

Gotta say, I didn't care for Beerfest. Too much a low rent Dodgeball, imo. Super Troopers was amazingly good. I don't usually care for that kind of it's funny because it's dumb comedy, but they did it so well that it worked even for a hater like me.

I played baseball from little league through high school and played several years of slow pitch softball later. Been a Dodger fan for many years - now watch every game on stream/TV unless it is blocked by MLB's rules that block the game in my area (unfortunately that includes Dodger/Padres since apparently Tucson is in San Diego's exclusive domain for streaming purposes).
Was out trimming the hedges yesterday and one of them was apparently hosting a wasp party. Oddly, the sting that hurt the least at the time is now the one that is turning red and swelling up. Little bastards!
Gamechanger for me this year was moving a TV up against the kitchenette bay window which looks out into my swim spa. So I've been taking in a lot of Blue Jays innings this year just chillin outside in the tub.

Driving manual makes you more involved in the driving process/more involved with the car, and it's simply more fun IMO. You can leave in 3rd gear to get max torque on an onramp, you can use engine braking, you can double-clutch once you get good at it. i think the biggest misconception i had when i was younger was that my love life would be consistent
ie my attractive quotient is x, so i should be of interest to all partners of a similar or lower rating of their own
but that's not how it works at all - it's much more like the weather where there's a lengthy period of drought and followed by flash floods and downpours
so if you're stuck in a rut and in the midst of a drought - don't resign yourself to believing that this is the norm - because it's probably just a drought and it's not uncommon to be rejected by a herd of 4s over only to have then have 8s and 9s completely obsessed with you a few months later

Manuals seem like a dying art, but the people who love them seem to really love them.
What is it about driving stick that keeps people hooked?
my daily is manual. nothing fancy or fast, its a hyundai
presonally, it keeps me paying attention. when i drive automatics i find myself paying attention to other things rather than the road, or worse, i start to fall asleep. when i drive a manual i have to generally pay more attention because of the shifting. since i got it like 6ish years ago, i feel like it's helped a lot.
it is getting harder to find cars that are offered as manuals though. idk what i'm going to do whenever i am ready for a new car (probably like 5+ years away), especially because i prefer cars with minimal footprints. my options are going to be very limited.
