Jazz: America's Music
Today I purchased Blue Train by John Coltrane (on the blue note label) -Excellent and beautiful flowing Jazz work. Comp
one of my favorite St John compositions
yet hearing this version now for the first time is quite emotional
John mentored Pharoah
who subsequently helped Alice guide Ravi, Oran, and John Jr through childhood after their father passed at 40.
Pharoah
Ravi
William Henderson piano
Steve Neil bass
Ralph Penland drums
Henderson and Neil are frequent Sanders contributors and their play is filthy but this is the first time i'm specifically aware of hearing Penland play drums
did a bit of research and found this

shame on me
Your Queen is a Reptile
My Queen is Harriet Tubman
The piano ain't got no wrong notes.
-Thelonius Sphere Monk
if you care to listen along
here is the soundtrack to my next 50:38
oslo appropriately paused at 04:20 and 42:00
rotterdam holland late october 67
why stop Monk collecting assets at octet while all these fantasy league nonet player are still available
Ray Copeland (tp/flh)
Clark Terry (flh)
Jimmy Cleveland (tb)
Phil Woods (as)
Johnny Griffin (ts)
Charlie Rouse (ts)
Thelonious Monk (p)
Larry Gales (b)
Ben Riley (d)
Nice work. Now you've got me thinking about Jimmy Cleveland
Broken YouTube Linksomeone has to play the part of fantasia elephant in the school play
a quartet of four observed at monterey jazz fest '63
further time stamp evidence includes Monk and Rouse punching back notes same time Ali quickly beat the sh!+ out of Sonny Liston using the butterfly flutter by sledgehammer Trane technique
Charlie Rouse (ts)
Thelonious Monk (p)
Edward "Butch" Warren (b)
Frankie Dunlop (d)
there is nothing quite like it when in the proper frame of mind
Pedalboard Miles was a damn menace
The other concert I've watched a few times lately is at the other end of the spectrum. Best rhythm section in the world. Freddie Green. Count Basie is kinda similar to Miles in that they both work with space as much as form.
Watch what happens...

The Detroit Jazz Festival is happening this weekend and they have a quality live stream for all of the stages. It's free, unless you'd like to make a donation along the way. Scroll down to see all the stages.

This is the schedule with today and tomorrow's lineups for all the stages. I'd highly recommend catching the Branford Marsalis Quartet tonight (their set begins at 9:15pm Detroit time).

Cheers and hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.
I was listening to this walking my dogs in the park and I'm like first off this is just Impressions but slightly altered and called Flavors and second George Benson is ****ing COOKING on this track. I would have guessed it was Pat Martino with those fast eight note runs. George could do anything.
I am at least six months behind on my Saxophone Noir posts, but I've got them all queued up somewhere in my little brain. Now on this one, I dare you to listen to the opening credits to City on Fire, and not order a double.

I like this guy's taste in music when I'm waking up in the morning.
Broken YouTube LinkI'd love to see Lage do an acoustic set. This is something else.
He does something weird with the chords here. The great Oscar Peterson.
