Now I get the reticence of OP to tell us about his background.
What is with this constant obsession with some people to find outliers to demonstrate something?

Especially in the matter of climate change, where this is incredibly common to find people singling out random facts and brandish them as a gotcha (making a snowball, seeing rain, being a facist from Italy,etc...).

This science article documents one of the feedback loop items inherent in Earth's systems.

As it gets warmer, soil leaks out more CO2 to the atmosphere.

I was in a hospital bed for three days with a window. I was given a 95% chance of survival, which being a poker player, those odds gave me some concern. I saw an unusual star. so i downloaded an app to help me determine what the star was and then read about it. The stars name is antares, it is a famous star in the constellation scorpio. It flickers because its set to explode any time. In astronomical time its any second but in human terms it might be 10,000 years it might be a million years.
Obviously any thing humans can do to stabilize the climate should be our number 1 priority. Earths time is also limited, like antares. I think spinoza was right. free will is an illusion, humans are dumb and the highest good is to love god.

I am irrelevant. Just a bag of flesh with a very finite shelf life.

It's interesting how so many people want to pivot from a discussion of substance to a discussion of character.

It's not like I claim to be a good person .... I don't believe that people are good or bad. We just are.

I have a preference that life on Earth goes on. That my kids don't have such a dark future to contemplate. That's really all that you need to know about my background.

I'm a relatively older man.

When I encounter young people of Gen Z ilk and grasp their feeling of powerlessness as the world gets darker ..... it hurts. It's a sad situation.

I wish I could do something to at least them know that some people care. That they are not invisible and their experience matters.

I don't understand what it's like to live inside the body and mind of people who don't feel that. Perhaps you folks can enlighten me ?

Of all the people here, Lucifer is the only one who reveals anything about himself. He wants to be a lord. He wants freedom for himself, but not the slaves who would work for him.

If people want to make this about character .... how about sharing something about your own ?

Nut Nut, im a millenial that loves to talk about my own character. it is a personal weakness of mine.
So, I would be happy to tell you something about that. what do you want to know?

by spaceman Bryce

what do you want to know?

Whatever you feel like sharing.

How do you feel about the state of the world and your place in it ? If you were given the responsibility of running the world, what would you do differently ? What do you hope for ?

I personally feel the world is in a state of decline and the things that I value most are being taken away from the people I care about most. I don’t think it’s doomed, just in decline. I think democracies around the world are being eroded.

If I was given responsibility of the world I would focus on creating global frameworks and rules within those frameworks to address artificial intelligence, climate change, and energy needs for the benefit of all as we live in an increasingly globalized economy. I would also like global rules setup to protect the rights of lgbtq individuals and women. my hope is for a world of freedom and individual rights for all regardless of who they truly are.

Sounds like we have something in common. That's refreshing in light of all the people here who bring only criticism.

How do you imagine the state of decline you see being stopped short of "doom". What force do you see arising to stop it from continually getting worse ?

I think it will get worse before it gets better. I can’t predict the future but I think that authoritarians tend to be stopped. I personally feel oppressed. I think authoritarians by their very nature seek to control and over engineer things and in the long run that is unstable. I see people who are good being the ones to rise up. there os a famous quote which im not going to look up, but it’s about in times of insane greed and authoritarianism you can look towards the helpers.

Ecriture d'adulte .... the entire purpose of explaining Earth's orbital eccentricity was to explain why Earth has oscillated between ice ages and warm periods.

How would you explain to a layperson why that oscillation occurs ?

The NASA quote you posted does a pretty good job. The eccentricity, angle of rotation and precession cause changes to how much energy the Earth receives and radiates back into space.

by Nut Nut

The following is from NASA's website. You think NASA is wrong ?

Eccentricity – Earth’s annual pilgrimage around the Sun isn’t perfectly circular, but it’s pretty close. Over time, the pull of gravity from our solar system’s two largest gas giant planets, Jupiter and Saturn, causes the shape of Earth’s orbit to vary from nearly circular to slightly elliptical.

Nope. I've said multiple times other planets are the dominant factor in the change of the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit.

The NASA quote doesn't explain the feedback loops between GHG's and warming. How warming cause GHG's to be released from land and ocean sinks and how those GHG's trap more heat.

The article explains the trigger ..... the orbital relationship between Earth and Sun is what triggers the transitions between ice age and warm period.

Well then ..... we can agree to agree.

I think the word "authoritarian" is more nuanced than the common negative association which is attached to it.

The laws against murder, rape and child abuse are technically authoritarian. There is a government with the authority to make laws which provide heavy punishments those prohibited behaviors.

None of us wants to live in a world where the government doesn't have the authority to penalize such behavior.

When the world needs to fix big problems, societies delegate immense power to leaders to make the necessary changes. Lincoln suspended habeus corpus in order to lead the US through the Civil War. There has never been an effective system of government which is independent of capable leadership with the authority to govern.

The alternative is anarchy.

Do you want an anarchical form of government ?

Edit: In your ideal form of government, how are decisions made ?

No, as I stated previously I want international frameworks set up, which is far from pure anarchy. Having authority does not an authoritarian make. I am somewhat dissapointed in this response as I thought you were going to ask a personal question. But maybe, just perhaps, you’re less interested in the expressed idea to understand others character from a place of understanding and more interested in defending your own. I would ask you to step outside your comfort zone, forget about your own reputation here( it doesn’t matter), and ask what you really want to ask. but thats just my opinion. I certainly don’t speak for others here.

I invited you to share whatever you wish about yourself.

Do you have a sense of purpose ? Any goals in life ?

I skipped that part because young people often assume old people don’t actually care and I didn’t want to just state something great about me or what ever for no reason. In fact the quality of your questions will determine the quality of your answers- not just with me but with many young people.

I’ve often struggled with a sense of purpose. my inner loneliness from being rejected by mainstream society caused me to ask many tough questions of myself and others. I think in terms of goals, once you realized you have an extreme outlier mind such as my own that cant fit into mainstream american society and so you exist in unusual spaces your purpose slowly shifts from a constant longing for affirmation from people youll never get to a deep appreciation for those who do and so my real goals are just to help those with enough flavour to have a lens that sees my world.

by spaceman Bryce

How is that coming along ? Are you finding any traction ?

What is your perception of the root cause of your lack of fit with mainstream society ?

Great. I have many many close friends, and often help, though my core personality isnt the super kind super helpful kind, im naturally a bit self centered, though in my experience less so than most guys.

I think the root cause is prenatal development.

I find orbital mechanics to be deeply troubling. entropy is always increasing.
Breaking! Jury clears David of first-degree murder in the killing of Goliath, citing orbital mechanics.

“He wasn’t trying to kill Goliath,” the lawyer insisted. “He just let the strap slip at random, coincidentally giving the stone enough speed to fall in a dramatic arc. Unfortunately, Goliath was standing where it came down.”

One juror summed it up: If satellites eventually lose energy and fall to Earth, and even Triton needed billions of years of tidal forces to bleed off enough energy to smooth its ellipse, how can we say David had intent?
I grew up in a situation which was characterized by abuse and neglect.

So I tend to look at the world with a sensitivity toward others who experience neglect. I look at the experience of most people in Gen Z and their experience of having less than their parents experience of unprecedented and temporary privilege. There is no great youth moment of Woodstock and Vietnam protests and a Summer of Love for these young people. No easily affordable homes and easy job market which made it easy to earn an independent living. They have a much darker future.

I'm not pleased with the values of most of my Boomer cohorts. We were born on third base ..... most think we hit a triple.

by ecriture d'adulte

Like you said, Tritons orbit is elliptical just with lower eccentricity than other observed moons/planets. There is nothing different going on with the dynamics of Triton than any other orbiting body.

But the particulars are a lot different. For instance, if Trident were structurally as rigid as the Moon, it would still be in a highly elliptical orbit, right?

My situation was not characterized by neglect until later on. My sister is a hyper intelligent woman, and very career focused. She has three degrees and earns high six figures. My father was a leading scientist in his field and my mother was a housewife. I was expected by my family at large to be very successful person but past very young youth it became clear I was underachieving. I stepped out of ordinary society at a young age. I did things my own way. I did not attend after school events at my high school. My thinking is very independent and mostly hung out with people older than high school students at that time. I went to a very unusual place.I had relationships with many guys at a time when kansas was hostile to gays. I squeaked into college despite hardly attending high school. Most of my friends are in the lgbtq community, and many in the gambling community and in other communities. I made so many bad decisions and was so unusual that I was cut off from my family at large. This was mostly discrimination against someone who does not fit which is something great about gay communities everyone has to find their real families since physics doesnt allow it most of the time. One interesting thing is two of my cousins protected me coming from two very different places; one a conservative from new york amd the other a lesbian who does work in food deserts in georgia. life has a certain flavor for those who cannot find shelter from the storm, and one of my cousins got me out of 7. Theres certain people who have the lens to see you when no one else does.

By the way if your ever wondering what the gayest thing is besides gay sex, like what the “gayest” thing is its being disowned by your “concerned” family. Thats why house fathers exists.
Despite all this i learned over time to seperate true knowledge from constructed knowledge and am doing quite well for myself.

Yes overtime things are much less affordable for the average american and young people are constantly being asked to work harder even though they already do. they work harder than the idealized hard work of previous generations.

The ancient egyptians would talk a lot about traveling to the imperishable stars after death, the pre scientific beliefs of the egyptian scribes frantically trying to predict what “god” wanted gave them a lot of data points and they believed in the imperishable stars primacy and they thought when they died they might travel there. the imperishable stars were the northern stars, though they are different now but think polaris, ursa major. They were basically right we are just patterns and we all return to the stars eventually, because we are of course built out of atoms that came from stars and been in thousands of different life forms over the years. but they were wrong about the imperishable stars because as earth rotates around the galaxy the stars are all “perishable” there is no northern star forever. theres no such thing as a circular orbit or an imperishable star.
