From what little we’ve seen of Russia’s war plan, it looks like their intention is to reach the line basically between Kyiv and Odessa by the end of next year. So where it goes up to and to there is just going to depend a lot on how Russia’s economy holds up and how bad the war fatigue gets in Ukraine over the next couple of years.
Putin knows NATO isn’t going to give up on Ukraine as a buffer zone. Without Ukraine, NATO would probably have to double its budget just to fortify the eastern front, not to mention the chaos it would cause for Europe with energy and food pipelines falling into his hands.
So to keep going beyond that the Russians would need to be okay living in a war economy indefinitely.

He can't and daren't attack NATO countries and he knows it. Even attacking Ukraine, he's made himself look stupid and suffered double the casualty rate of his intended victim. The West can probably accommodate his feeble and failing attempts at Hitler cosplay indefinitely.

Some are facts some are fabricated but for the most part its all coming out of the Kremlin.
The reason they're pushing this extreme stuff is to scare the Russian people. not you. And the reason for that is that is so Putin can then play the calm, moderate leader and ease their fears.
We see this with Russia over and over again. Some quasi official sources say something to cause fear in the Russian people, then Putin comes out and walks it back.
That same sort of thing happened in that video. They need him there for contrast, so they can walk it back. That builds trust and confidence in the panel from people watching.

I agree that's their power structure and motives. But Ukraine has their own long range missiles that can reach Moscow. How accurate they are is another. So as I said if tactical nukes are the only option to prevent Moscow from that sort of attack, they'll usecthem. That's their primary function as a last ditch effort.
That's what I meant earlier about targeting a civilian grid. That Tomahawks can take out their drone and munitions factories around Moscow without risking collateral damage is why they're saber rattling. But air raid sirens everyday in Moscow will force Putin to do something.
