RIP to the greatest umpire of them all, Dickie Bird.

I’m amazed he was still around. He seemed to be at least 60 by the late 80s

Incredible character and still by far the most famous and revered umpire

Played in the same Barnsley CC XI as Geoff Boycott and his best friend, Michael Parkinson.

So Cummins being sidelined for the first half of the ashes makes things a tad more competitive...

not sure they lose that much with Boland coming in. Another injury might make it a little closer

Top effort by the Aussie women overnight, but will count for nothing if India can turn things around and win the ODI WC.

They lose a captain, 25 runs every innings and last time England and Boland met they took him apart. I know it's home conditions, but I don't think he'll be quite as effective as 4 years ago.

That England Ashes squad is so disappointing. CRAWLEY AGAIN over Hameed/Sibley?? Jacks/Bashir against the nous and experience of Lyon? Why not take the in-form Leach? Stokes and Archer are great when fit but if they both get injured and if Root's out of form, it could be another blood bath down under!!

That’s quite the optimism! Even with the England away tests included he averages 20 with a strike rate of 38 in his tests against England!

Having said that I think Pat is the best fast bowler in the last decade, so of course he’s going to be missed.

Sadly though, our bowlers just aren’t going to be good enough out here. Which is a shame because their batting line up isn’t great either but we’ll make them look better than they are

Last ashes he averaged 161 with a strike rate of 151.

That's what I'm clinging to.

Lotta ifs...

Anyone else enjoying the women's world cup?

It’s a decent watch.
England on the ropes here.
Wolvaardt batting is fun though

England 1/3 in response

Yikes

Ellyse Perry 74*, surprisingly and disappointingly her highest ever WC score.

Australia have lost their way a little, but 200+ will be a tough chase for India.

Can't imagine many people betting on a SA v Ind final once the semis were announced.

Wow what an upset

Meant to say 300+. Great chase by India. Disappointing effort by Australia. Our bowling and fielding was putrid. Good wake up call to the team that as good as they are, they are often vulnerable in knockout games. As great as Ellyse Perry has been, hopefully selectors inform her that she is no longer required for ODIs.

There seems to be too much hype for the ashes.

I get the articles and people being interested, but daily TMS podcasts that start 9 days before the ashes?

Detailed live reporting on a 3 day warm up game at a club ground?

Perhaps I'd be more psyched and into it if I thought England had even a faint chance to do something impressive.

Australia are trying their best by making sure their bowlers are injured and their batters are either old or out of form, but we're still gonna lose heavily.

England’s decision not to play proper warm up games is arrogant and foolhardy.

Hazelwood out of the first test too.

If England don't win the first test then I don't think they'll win any. Their best chance im an age.

Foolhardy possibly, but I don't think it's arrogance; just the result of an overactive schedule.

The days of proper tours are dead which has seriously undermined test cricket.

I may have been a bit quiet of late for cricket but I will be raring to go when the Ashes start. Sadly no tickets for me as days 1 to 3 are booked out and but may still go to day 4 Brisbane as the weather is very unpredictable at the moment. So while Bazball might have the game done in 3 days with the weather I can see it going to late day 4, day 5. As for the squad, not sure why we are selecting Marnus tbh - I would select Renshaw. I can see Webster missing out now that Green can bowl again.

Marnus has scored 5 centuries in the last 8 matches.

Renshaw has scored 2

I can understand you might prefer Renshaw, but surely you understand why they've picked Marnus
