Suitedjustice's Ongoing Mid-life Crisis
I woke up in the middle of choking to death again; though to be accurate, it was towards the end of the process--woke up
I remember seeing the 5.5 hour TV version (in episodes obv) as a kid in '84; not sure we if we had already a color TV back then. I don't remember much apart from the existential dread it oozed and finding out that we protestants also had Bishops.
And the bishops can marry, which I'd forgotten about. On the religious front, you also get what I assume is Jewish Practical Kabbalah magic, which is cool.
I knew about the extra long version of the movie, but the "short" version won a bunch of awards, and I figured I'd get the gist of it after 3 hours.
The poker room is running a $500 high hand payout every 20 mins, today only. Usually it's $500/hour, so I'm in Springfield today hoping for some promo magic.
+$111 from 5 hours of poker and +$65 from 2 hours of slots. I didn't come anywhere near a high hand for the promo.
In 5 hours I picked up no AA nor KK pre; I made one set, no straights and no flushes post, so I'm happy with the win, most of which I picked up from one hand: value betting AT on a T high board vs two classic stations, and not being afraid to put in a smallish third bet on the river, knowing that worse would call and that I would be good at least 50% of the time vs those players.
So you've got grind on the mind once again, and you made that money. Nice!
I haven't played much hold em in the last several years, but at one time I played a lot of it, and I think I made as much money with AT on a T-high board as with any other hand. AA and KK are nice, but often you need another big hand playing to get paid. With a T-high board, a lot of random junk will pay off AT.
Thanks Sheep!

There's a lot of truth to the adage that they'll put you on AK, especially if you're a TAG.
-$90 at the tables for 4 hours and -$40 for 2 hours at the slots. Not a great day, but not a disaster.
Once again, no AA, no KK, no straights, no flushes, and one set.
Here's the set hand. Main villain is a standard $1/$2 reg. He knows the basics, but his bet sizing could use work.
Two limps from EP and MP, I open T♥T♠ for $15 in the CO. BU calls, EP calls , MP calls.
(Pot $63) - four players
Flop T♦5♠4♦
Checks to me, I bet $30. only BU calls. Effective starting stacks $400.
(Pot $123) - heads up
Turn 9♦
It's hard to make a flush. I don't want to check and give BU a green light to bluff, nor do I want to miss value if he checks back something he would call with.
I bet $40 and BU raises to $100.
(Pot $263) - heads up, hero left to act.
Villain has the flush here 90% of the time. If I call, the pot will be $323, and that is enough on its own for me to try to spike 10 outs, even without the implied odds on the river action. I call.
(Pot $323)
River 2♦
Now the A♦X semibluff gets there. Check check. Villain shows K♦Q♦
Villain's sizing should have been bigger on the turn. He gave me right price to try to realize my equity. If the board paired, I don't think he could have folded to a reasonable bet on the river.
Should I have bet more on the turn? I figured it might fold out some hands that Villain would otherwise continue with, and the smaller size makes it easier for me to bet/fold to a larger raise.
Yeah IMHO you should have bet more OTT here for value. On this board, he can have a lot of legit hands that you beat, and a lot of draws that 1/2 players often kinda feel compelled to go with.
I just finished Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander, an astonishing three hour admixture of color-drenched magical realism and galloping existential dread. Mind you, it's very good.As usual with these great directors, I noticed the blocking: what kind of business they put in the frame to draw the eye around and augment the themes and storylines. Here Bergman does not disappoin
This is giving me Deer Hunter vibes.
we talked about this earlier, i found it
going to now watch the caesars and complete the trifecta

Yeah it saved me money this time around, but across Villain's range, I would make less money with the smaller turn bet, as I'm prolly +EV in that spot more often than not, even after being raised.
I watched The Deer Hunter recently. Michael Cimino is definitely a sharpie with the camera placement and blocking, and he doesn't like a short runtime on his movies.
I've been toying with giving his Heaven's Gate a watch, as that flick bombed so badly that it brought an end to the 70's film auteur era as surely as the bloated and bloody Altamont concert ended the 60s hippie era, but I haven't pulled the trigger on it. I've heard some noise about Heaven's Gate being reassessed as a masterpiece with certain flaws, but most critics still rate it as an overlong stinker.

Nice find! One of the few shows I haven't been able to find on the alternative streaming sites is The Sarah Silverman Program. I'll check the Internet Archive for it.
I liked Heaven's Gate. I enjoyed watching it. I even liked that movie where Warren Beaty and Dustin Hoffman are wandering around the desert, which is another one that people like to hate.
I like long dramas, loved Deer Hunter and like Micheal Cimimo. I like westerns. Heaven’s Gate was a bit too much but I think I made it through.
I vaguely remember in college in the late 80s we had to read "Final Cut: Art, Money, and Ego in the Making of Heaven's Gate, the Film that Sank United Artists" and then watch the movie for some class. Book was interesting IIRC, movie less so...
Yesterday I went to the casino and lost every hand of video poker I played. I finished my run down $80 and discouraged, and I didn't play poker. I'll try again today.
gotta listen to king niche and keep the grind on the mind
as far as heaven's gate goes, that's also on my list of must watch films
from my understanding, there's some cuts out there that work better than others - the problem with the film is pacing and stretches of boredom but it's an otherwise wonderfully crafted film

After paying my rent, I no longer have the funds on hand to safely play live poker. I'll need a big score at the slots or video poker, or a miracle run at online poker to pull me out of the rough. I have a lot of work to do to generate as many reps as possible in a short amount of time.

GL!
GL, what about the tournaments?
I’m sure they’re already aware of your willingness to help out but remind the bosses at the old office that if they want an extra day or two off for travel this month, you’re there to pick up the shifts.
Club W PT gold is softer than infant poo but it’s also super swingy in the cash games. But they do have a couple of high value super cheap tournaments in the early evening: a 5:30pm $750 freeroll with 100+ to first place and a $2250 $2 buy in with a $2 add on with $400 to first place. I’ve finished final 5 in both multiple times this year [emoji2375]
DM me about it if you want to run them b/c I can’t play the $2 mini add on b/c of my work schedule
I mean, for live poker, you have to have big reserves anyway, not the kind of money anywhere in the neighborhood of paying rent. And you have to be a big winner in the game, like not a 10bb/100 winner, a 10bb/hour winner. If you're not then it's just too swingy to make a living, you can do the math, with those few hands played it's very easy to get on a monster multimonth downswong even if you play a lot more than suited.

I’ve been on two sick downswings that took a long time to break because I didn’t have the time/time tolerance to put in the volume to work through it. I’ve been lucky to not go on one since I came back to playing a few years ago but that one in 2016 into 2017 sucked. The one after Black Friday was a real dick kick and I was finishing school and using poker to help pay for it so that sucked lol.
I think SJ is aware of the precariousness of the situation but the situation is what it is. Gotta find a way to work through and out of it
I think he might be there in the cycle:
1) Unnecessary founds to play. <=== We are here
2) Going back to a full time "standard" job.
3) Building a money cushion.
4) Getting bored of the "standard" job.
5) Going back to poker and AP "freedom".

Yeah we've all been there, that's why we point that out
