Marnus has scored 5 centuries in the last 8 matches.

Renshaw has scored 2

I can understand you might prefer Renshaw, but surely you understand why they've picked Marnus

I just don't trust Marnus against good quality fast bowling. Also scoring runs at Alan Border Oval and Adelaide Oval is whole lot different to scoring runs at Perth and the Gabba. I also wouldn't rate any of the Tasmanian and South Australian bowlers tbh that he scored those first class centuries against. Also I can't believe we are heading into the Ashes with Usman still playing - he will be our weakest link. Don't worry about Marnus - I would much prefer him to play than Usman.

Marnus

I'm not seeing an issue

Standard Bazball nonsense from the Poms. Started as ever by a ludicrous first ver suicide by Crawley

Just very quickly will comment here - Marnus and old man Khajawa should have been left out as England's pace attack is too good. Cannot believe Khawaja was rolled out - this is a worse decision than playing a 40 year old Gatting in 1994/1995

When did the camera work get so awesome?!

Bazball > Ozzie Spazball :p

supposedly ABC had a headline referring to 'shambolic england' earlier today, which has since been removed

Nonsense? They've only lost 2 of the last 14 test series, winning 8. LOL.

For a long time I was calling for Marnus to be dropped, but he has earned his way back, hard to argue against his inclusion. Khawaja though, I hope he keeps failing and showing up our incompetent selectors who treat dropping players as akin to killing their first born child.

Some terrible batting today but great bowling too. Starc is on a hat trick. Stokes as a bowler is phenomenal. A fiver in his last Test and another one today.

Worse than the terrible batting was the over rate. Sure, 15 wickets fell after lunch but with only 4 falling before lunch, Australia bowled a pathetic 23 overs.

The thing about Khawaja is though it isn't like he hasn't got his post career sorted as he will end up with the Ch 7 commentary team which makes this even worse that they have selected him - it is literally the equivalent of playing like a 37 to 40 year old washed up player for WI, Zimbabwe or Ireland where the only reason he is playing is not actual form but just the amount of games he has played and says he is available.

England def looks like the stronger team on paper and they showed it today. if they can use just a little bit of common sense it should be a comfortable series victory.

Can I just mention the terrible umpire decision not to initially give Weatherald out?
Thank F for reviews.

CricViz has ENG 72/28, probably about right. Australia unlikely to score another 10 runs, I trust England to score 200-300 which will be enough to wrap up the win after lunch on Sunday. Cummins most likely out for the next Test, rumours that Hazlewood out for the series, England need to take advantage of the situation and go 2-0 up, or 1-1 at worst.

Long live Test cricket!

First ever pair for Crawley

First ever Test where the first three opening partnerships all failed to score. Decent chance for that to extend to the 4th innings.

So glad we stuck with crawley for years because he was gonna be so good in australia

People are moaning about Crawley after his pair (they were moaning after the first duck).

Let's start moaning if he fails again next Match. Be supportive and give him a break. Last match he scored 64. The match before that he scored 84.

Right now literally the English fans have just started boiling their next batch of coffee

Oh dear

Always a roller coaster with England.

Partnership would be good right about now.

To be fair many of us here and elsewhere have been moaning about him for years. And rightly so. He’s had 59 tests and averages 30

He isn’t good enough and what makes it worse is that he doesn’t try hard enough

Yeah, true and a fair point.

From my perspective everyone moans when he does badly (Pope too) and gives him a pass or even praises him when he does well.

What's actually happening is that some people moan when he does badly and are silent when he does ok. A different set of people are quiet when he does badly and praise him when he does well.

They're different groups of people that I'm conflating.

CricViz has Australia at 67% which I think is ridiculous. I don’t see enough good form in the Aussies to warrant that.

Khawaja the old man won’t open again. He needs to either make a contribution and/or Australia to win to justify future selection.

Believe I heard that given time off the field, the earliest Khawaja can bat is at #8. If Australia wins and he doesn’t have to bat, will that save him? He should be dropped because he’s old and not fit.

Australia 39/0 (8)

Keep Head as the opener, drop Khawaja for Webster

This is a pretty humiliating loss for England right now

Travis Head 123 (83) - S/R 148.19

504th score of >80 in the 4th innings in Test history, that was the best strike rate of the lot, just pipping Bairstow’s 136 (92) - S/R 147.82.

Australia 205/2 (28.2) - 7.23 rpo

357th score of 105+ to win in the 4th innings in Test history, that was the best team strike rate of the lot, passing West Indies 173/6 (25.2 - 6.82 rpo) against India in 1983.
