Ask me about being an airline pilot or flying in general
I wasn't even aware of OOT until someone recently suggested I start this thread here. (I had posted a question about Ve
Good luck man. I appreciate so much all that you've contributed here, easily the best non-poker non-joke thread on the site. I'll never forget your contributions to the Sparks prop bet. Legend.
The Sparks prop bet is up there!
W0X0F, I remember you having to take time off from the earlier issue. Best wishes going forward with treatments and recovery. I'm looking forward to hearing your positive outcome.
A most sincere thank you for the time and effort you've put in educating us non-aviators on your world.
As always, invite open for a beer/coffee/lunch/whatever if you're going to visit W0X0F-sis in Longmont and would like to meet up on the way by.
As mark said, bestest thread around.
I'm rooting for you Captain Steve.
Is a 60-year-old plane less reliable than a 5-year-old plane on average? Or does the fact that maintenance is done on planes overrule that? Metal fatigue is a thing, safety inspections are continually revealed to be greatly lacking, the more maintenance done the more opportunity for mistakes, oversights and counterfeit parts, the cycles of flight are inherently degrading, and inactivity is undesirable as well.
Ok. So?
Obviously, airplanes should be single-use.
Right. If not single use, definitely only 1 year. They probably design them to break down as soon as that year warranty runs out.
When you need a straw man to that level, you have unwittingly apologized for being on the wrong side.
Sure, guy. It's not at all a joke about your complete unwillingness to pay the slightest attention to people who actually have some expertise on the subject. :eyeroll:

Of course I'll take the 5 year old airframe given a choice. Who can forget Aloha Flight 243, which actually lost the top of the fuselage in 1988? I lived in Hawaii when that happened and it was an extraordinary story.

It was at the outside range of flight cycles when it ripped apart. Shocker. I mean they were doing maintenance.
Garmin Autoland FTW in Colorado:
The pilots' decision to allow an autopilot landing after losing pressure ended well. I'm sure reaction videos are being created already. Thoughts?
I have a friend who works at Garmin who helped test that. Pilot took him up as an observer and then simulated a heart attack. Friend had no idea it was a simulation or that he was an active participant in the test until the pilot gasped out "auto...land." Then he caught on, hit the button and enjoyed the ride.
Sorry guys, I kept meaning to mention the above, but forgot when I was online. Here's a video of a local news story too;
wishing all future humans the ability to harness three-point access toward someone else in their lives who can consistently hit the walk off home run of stories half as consistentally as our captain W0X0F
not intended to come across as a eulogy
but more a gee you guys should appreciate more the aluminum wisdom W0X0F has willingly scattered upon us across the decades.
please let me know if i can help correct your next flight path in any way

You are a prolific poster and I've greatly enjoyed your paritcular brand. Thank you for the kind words.
Today, I saw one of my oncologists to discuss a CT Scan I had last week. It was good news and he reports that the radiation seems to have been effective. It felt that way to me...the palpable tumor area is not as large or hard as it was 2-3 months ago. We're going to check again in March and I'm just going to continue my life philosophy of finding the joy in every day.
So happy to hear such great news!
Congratulations! Sounds like a pretty good life philosophy too.
the best thing i read today
congratulations!
Good to hear you are doing better. All the best wishes for 2026! ♥
Thanks to all of you. Feeling good going into 2026. Got to be honest...six months ago I had my doubts that I would be here for Christmas. Now, I'm thinking I might get a few more trips around the sun.
Go round and round!
