With England's most recent approach they might have won the first test and been competitive in the others. Series might even still be alive.

2 tosses wasted.

Injured Cummins and Hazelwood wasted.

Khawaja being injured and in the XI wasted.

Ill and absent Smith in test 3 wasted.

Lots of attempts by the cricketing gods to make it competitive, but alas it's gone before Christmas day.

Also wasted…a lot of decent starts.

27 times in the series an England batsman has got to 20 and only 1 ton

Amazing how the Poms suddenly look competitive in English conditions.

Shows how they totally failed to acclimatise and adjust to Australian conditions. Not a surprise given they only played one dummy warm up game.

I think so - in stark contrast to the Oval when I visited in July and surprised by the very tasty beer options which to be fair compared with inner city London prices wasn't all that expensive and sometimes cheaper - you don't get that in Australia. Beer prices at grounds always at least 20% higher

I used to go to test cricket a lot but more or less gave up after they stopped us taking our own beer in. Apart from the obvious, the crowd getting up and down all the time makes it too hard to enjoy the cricket. Big screen was part of that as well. I literally missed a lot of Muralitharan bowling England out because the crowd was up and down so much.

Still think the best test match I saw live was the Sydney (Jan 1999). Despite not drinking because of the 2 hour queue for shite beer, being able to sit behind the wicket for a great game in the boiling heat for 3.5 days was magic.

Just on this rant again, when Strauss’ team that won 3-1 came here in 2010-11 that played 3 3 day first class lead up games against full strength WA and SA teams plus one against Aus A and one against Vic after the 2nd test and they were here almost a month before the series started

England played one 2 day game this year

Yep. Ludicrously underprepared.

Sadly that's the nature of cricket these days and it is seriously degrading test cricket.

lmao Engurland

The thing is, if you look at their schedule, there really isn’t any excuse for them not coming earlier. I honestly put it down to arrogance and a lack of attention to detail.

It’s by far the most important away series in the 4 year cycle and if it’s important, it should be treated as such.

Good effort from Head to face the first ball of the match and still be batting at stumps. I will make a bold prediction that the Test will last more than 2 days.

94,119 - record cricket crowd in Australia.

Well another spare three days for the team to be on the piss then

This curator might be hanged. You'd think they would have learned after Perth. CA has lost a lot of potential revenue this tour.

Possibly, though the wicket's predicted to become much more bat friendly as it ages.

I fear the people in charge don't really care about test cricket.

Anyway crazy game. Another 6 wickets this morning.

Yup think he'll get a dressing down, they lost $11m last year and they're on the hook for way, way less revenue this time.

Odd thing is that it seemed like a good test wicket that just needed a mow. Usually when we get an unplayable wicket it's too late to fix once the test match is imminent.

Good fun but ridiculous. I'd be mightily pissed off if I was an English fan who flew out intending to go the 3rd day onward.

From what they were saying on the radio, it was two paces and that’s where the problems started?

But I agree that it didn’t look that nasty

Got a friend who went out there who had tickets for the fourth day.

He's has some family to visit, but is a massive cricket fan, and definitely wouldn't have gone if the Ashes wasn't on.

The batting was insipid, but the stats don’t lie, the pitch was putrid.

1st ever Test in Australia (15th overall) to not feature an over of spin.

2nd ever Test in Australia (5th overall) with a bowling strike rate below 25.

5th ever Test in Australia (17th overall) lto not feature a score or 50+.

etc etc

PS. credit to England, deserved victory. Tongue was fantastic. Will Bashir and Potts play in Sydney?

I watched basically every ball until England had like 20 to win. The pitch was horrendous. Seam movement (exaggerated), uneven bounce. Starc looked like Garfield Sobers at Adelaide but not so much with the bat here. Only 3-4 players seemed to have the technique to even survive here.

A valiant 3-2 defeat incoming

A valiant 3-2 defeat incoming

one that might just allow the delusions to continue

I really hope you’re right and that Root scores some runs. I have my biggest bet of the year on him averaging 36+ and he’s slipped back after Melb

I'm just thinking here.

If someone said to me at the start of the ashes: "forget all the hype. Australia are the better team in home conditions. They have way the better bowlers and batters on par with England. Here's what I can get for you: A Root century, at least 1 test win, but you lose the ashes".

I might take that deal.

I badly need another decent score from Root so that he averages over 36 for the series

54 runs if he's out once

90 runs if he's out twice across 2 innings.

Dream scenario is that he gets 90+ in the first innings and then it's guaranteed.

Correct. I badly needed a not out in Melbourne
