Kane Williamson is averaging 62 over the same period. Shame he plays so few tests.
Kane is definitely 3rd in that list.
Averages 36 vs Australia
42 vs England, 37 vs India.
Averages 44 away.
He cashes in big when the conditions and opponents suit him.
In comparison Root averages 40 vs Australia, 59 vs India and 53 vs NZ.
Averages 46 away.
Smith Averages 56 vs England, 58 vs India and 46 vs NZ.
Averages 53 away.
Jarrod Kimber's book ranking the top 50 batters (an entire book with loads of stats and analysis and thought, not a newspaper column), has Steve Smith 6th, Joe Root 14th and Kan 32nd

If weβre doing a βvs top teamsβ segregation, it needs to include South Africa too.
Yeah it has never sat well with me to put Kane Williamson up there with the likes of Smith and Root. The discussion previous to the last 5 years was Smith v Kohli with Williamson 3rd (Root was always the 4th best batsman thought of then) and now it is Smith v Root and Williamson is still 3rd for that very reason - scores well in NZ in those conditions he is used to and on those small grounds they have there.
Also need to mention the variable conditions in Aus around the country where a Gabba/Perth wicket can be very different to an Adelaide/Melbourne wicket and Sydney in recent years has just been like a box of chocolates with what it will play like.
I think if the Kiwis had toured Aus more - Williamson's average would be much lower when it is already low against us.
New Zealand has flatest tracks in the world of all the places that regularly play test cricket. I guess Pakistan is more flat You donβt even have to deal with the spinning ball in New Zealand.
Yeah NZ is a bit of a joke. Should be a whitewash when they play us next summer
So yet another all-too-regular and meaningless T20 World Cup is on. Pakistan have decided they will play India. More than a third of the teams will have played two matches before Australia plays their first one.
While results so far have been predictable, it’s been great to see that many of the matches have been closer than expected. Don’t forget that cricket will be played at the next Olympics. I expect England will lose to some minnow. USA? PNG? ITA?
Cricket world cups have one of the most annoying rules in any sport: predetermined seeding. That is, presuming a team advances from the group stage, they keep their seeding. Seeded 1, qualify 2nd, you advance as the 1st seed.
Pre-determined seeding for the Super 8 stage:
X Group: IND (X1), AUS (X2), WI (X3), SA (X4)
Y Group: ENG (Y1), NZ (Y2), PAK (Y3), SL (Y4)
I have a Nepalese guy in my building so watched the England match with him. I'm not really a fan of T20, but that started converting me. Very exciting.
I've watched occasional highlights. Scotland having someone play on attempting a dilscoop against the Windies was quite the dismissal
He thought they were curling so gave it a little help to the target.
DOUBLE SUPER OVER!!!
And a THIRD was definitely possible.
Much better than “boundary count”.
I've been paying so little attention to the t20 wc that I am late to lolaustralia for losing to zimbabwe
Another one-sided contest between India and Pakistan yesterday. Not sure, why there is so much hype for this encounter.
Congrats to Australia who thought they would get better as the tournament progressed.
Hope it’s a NZ v SA final.
Australia too invested in test cricket its ruining their t20 team obv
I think England played about as well as Australia this tournament so far.
I had been diligently watching every game in the background on delay on Prime until I cancelled my subscription not knowing that I had cancelled it perfectly on my last day of my subscription so missed out on the last 6 or so games. I think we can put down our performance to no Cummins, Hazelwood or Starc - but I would like us to get rid off Zampa. He isn't Australian quality. We can't rely on him in the field let alone with the ball anymore. Also think Ellis is overrated
Or wanting to attend the Australian GP.
Bump for the ENG v NZ series and the in progress 150th Lords test. Having lost time to rain on Day 1, 30 mins in to day 2 - 1st innings: Eng 140 a/o V NZ currently 90-8 (having been 29-6).
Stokes and Atkinson dropped for the 2nd test due to yet another nightclub incident... You couldn't make it up!
Kane retired from international cricket after that first test. Pitch was so bad he was like I'm done with this crap.
What a player though
