There's already been proposed plans on immigration by democrats. And to make it clear, the primary problem w/ illegal immigration is the asylum process. There's been several reform proposals by democrats, not even including Biden's plan toward the end of his term that was written w/ bipartisan support, and then voted against by Republicans.
Immigration became a key issue in the last election for several reasons, but primarily because it's the easiest issue to incite and engage fascist with. It's an age-old playbook for leaders w/ authoritarian tendencies.
