Isn't this basically what Ben Johnson did? Rejected several offers before landing on one with a patient owner, number one overall pick QB who looked at least ok his rookie year, good weapons and tons of cap space.
The issue I guess would be if you reject jobs and your team regresses the next year. Bobby Slowik went from getting head coach interviews to fired in a year
Relatedly…Jake Locker went from being potential #1 pick to a lower round guy by staying in school and regressing. Less of an issue these days with NIL but it could be huge $$ lost back in the day
Maybe that was the official stance but I was pretty sure they pushed him out behind the scenes. (Seeing as he almost immediately resurfaced with KC.) Reading on it now, maybe not.
Thought it was basically the same as Chip with Oregon where the main guy stepped aside under not so subtle pressure that it would be better for the team.
They likely usually get hired back on as a college HC. And then Chip Kelly fails enough to get other jobs and make a lot of money. It does work both ways.

one charles p o'kelly barely was hired straight from new hampshire to serve two years as the mustache mike bellotti oc before king phil felt the need to shift coach horses and gift him the ad position
pretty sure without looking bellotti is still the winningest uo head coach

most egregious is locker also chose to pass on the last year of the previous cba that resulted in sam bradfords initial 6 yr/$78m/$50m guaranteed contract. next qb taken was tebow at 25 who signed a 5/11/9 type of deal.
drafted 8 in 2011 under a new cba, lockers contract was 4/12.5/12/5
drafted 8 in 2010 was rolando mcclain who signed for 5/40/23 with the lolraiders

Jake Locker was never going to be the #1 pick. Neither was Matt Leinart. These "oh they would have gotten taken so much higher if they came out a year earlier" stories are almost always BS.

yeah, that comment from Pegula was extremely telling about Beane. He's clearly been doing scorched earth ass covering to save his own job over the past month or two. I reckon it would be hard for a new coach to trust him given this.
