I will avoid the term "working class" in this post, because I do not think it is a meaningful as it was in the olden days. Traditional working class jobs are all over the wage brackets.
As someone who grew up poor and then moved into the socio-economic bracket called the middle class (more by random chance than worthy effort), I can state with a fairly high degree of certainty that the poor are routinely under-estimated and the middle-class routinely overestimated. I doubt that this phenomena is unique to my country.
For poor people, it is often harder to succeed, because there are fewer opportunity to do so, and brilliance is rarely awarded in the available gigs. Generational wealth is often non-existent. So, even when you do move in the socio-economic strata, bad decisions can cripple you for life, while good ones will still start you off at a disadvantage.
For the middle-class I think it seems much harder to fail. The penalty for mediocrity is low; below average doctors and lawyers can do completely fine for themselves even if they don't get headhunted for top brass. Generational wealth is the norm, so people can afford a couple of bad decisions and doing the right ones will give you a cushion for life.
As for politics, even in social-democratic country like mine, where politics is not just for the wealthy like in the US, it is still a middle-class game that very much follows middle-class rules and based on middle-class culture. The disenfranchisement of the poor isn't due to stupidity, it is due to the fact that it is fairly obvious who the game is for and thus it is a waste of time to pretend you participate on equal terms.
And in that respect, it is easy to see why people like Trump can carry an appeal. When it all burns, everyone feels the heat and thus the game is on equal footing.

What endless berating? No democratic elected official has ever talked about “white rural trash”. If the standard is the entire internet needs to stop being mean to low performing rurals you’re creating a pretty ridiculous standard and level of protection that no other group has. Except these people absolutely did choose this. They fled cities for the suburbs and exurbs to escape minorities. They've voted for Republicans who have gutted social services for generations. They are openly hostile to modernity and education --the mere suggestion that they learn to code instead of shovel coal is taken as an insult to their honor. Right now in Springfield, Ohio they are attempting a racist pogrom against some of the most productive members of the local economy.
