1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Sometimes you’re the fish. I couldn’t beat them a single hand in a really juicy 5/T game today so after the game got bad I left for plo where I remembered again why I should just always grind this game and not bother playing anything else.

I have gone on a little downswing from my peak this month mainly because I have not stuck to what works best for me.

At least I made people laugh and had a good table presence. And bought my parents a baguette.

Won $8, 000 at plo the other day thanks to a high VPIP VIP player who I felt really bad for so I sold him my strat guide and offered him coaching. Thankfully he paid me back what he owed me. Yesterday it started well but ended on a sour note with AQcc losing to J6cc on 853cc and JJ losing twice to AKo all in pre.

Quick Question. In your early poker career, in 1/3 games, you seemed to be crushing it with your low buy-in and your limping strategy(including limping to reraise). Would you still recommend that strategy for 1/3 (but not 2/5 since there are alot more 3bets in that game)?

It depends on the table. At loose passives ones no, because people will not raise enough for you. At loose aggressive ones yes, because you’ll have more opportunities to trap people. Basically any table with one or two people who raise too much and you can employ this strategy. It can work in any game that fits this description really regardless of stake. Except in bigger games people will usually adjust faster and not open the action for you when they see you limp again without a strong hand so it’s not as effective.

This weekend I spent some quality time with my ex we saw live bands and a movie. One of my goals is to do more non poker activities because I need more balance. Played less poker but it was nice and still made some money mostly from 5/10 yesterday thanks to AKs in a 4! pot on an A high flop.

Did well at plo yesterday after my hearing prep. AJT96ds won a three way all in pre on J87cc flop and I still had the nuts by the river. Two hearings today and hope for a decent judge because both have a chance of getting out.

Last night I lost at plo against this gambler who has been getting very lucky against me lately. He also angles and slow rolls so losing to him is annoying. AQQ54ds lost to his K high KQT98ds lost to his trash disconnected K high, set lost to his draw, and mediocre AA lost to another personÂ’s rundown. At least I booked a win at the 20/40 mix, making a 9 dugi and flush in dramadugi and 8 dugi holding in badugi.

Had a dream I lost a lot to colluder wife and in my annoyance I tossed her my remaining stack even though she didnÂ’t have me covered. The chips hit her hand and she picked up at which point I realized she picked up chips she didnÂ’t win and I called over the floor to catch her before she left. It was a real debacle.

Last night I t he mix someone compared me to a really great poker player, calling me the white version of himÂ…it really made my day after having a bothersome hearing in the morning where my client testified and tanked her own case after I basically won it for her. At least the hospital discharged my other client who was scheduled to have a hearing.

Was really exhausted in the middle of the day but finished interviews no hearings tomorrow (yippie!) relaxed and now in a good mood to grind. I even had a client tell me she appreciated me.

Yesterday was very slow in the poker room as were the games. I lost a couple hundo because a bluff didn’t get through at 5/10 (but at least he tanked for a couple minutes so I made him think). I won a little at plo but the games were pretty dreary.

I’m pretty much free the rest of the day after postponement dockets are over which is a nice change of pace compared to the beginning of the week which was pretty hectic.

Last night started slow but ended with a bang when I finally found a good plo table and really ran it up with AAT76ds and 65432ds being the all star hands I played as well as KKQJ4ds. Lost some at mix and hold em but ran it up over $6k at plo for a really good day.

Good day from plo and hold em, up around $2, 700. AJ>KQ all in pre co v btn and flopped a set against an overpair. Pretty strong month so far around $14, 000.

Had a dream I was playing 2-7 triple draw and I discarded my cards to draw and discarded the wrong one and went to retrieve it and somehow the stub flipped over my discards and I suddenly had KQ9sss in my hand and I was aghast. The dealer and I got into a squabble because he didn’t pause the game to get a ruling and I didn’t get to play my hand at all (I had an 876 but drew 2 to 742). It was actually a really friendly dealer so I’m surprised he was in the dream as an antagonist.

My tinder date fell through because he got a flat tire on the way but we’re gonna reschedule. Ran fine last night even though a bluff didn’t get through and I ran into AA with QQT66ds in an unnecessary preflop squeeze. Ran well elsewhere in plo and 20/40 mix and made around $2k on the day. I got called a “draw three-er” by an annoyed player who lost with his d1 to my d3 in triple draw, granted I did have a pair blocker in my hand increasing my equity a little. Went from 772 to 7542 right away and then my 87 held.

Feeling awfully tired today for some reason, maybe disrupted my sleep cycle the exact time I woke up.

I’m running good today! I called in ahead and right when I arrived a seat opened up in an amazing game with four action players. And there were no table transfers! I’m in heaven.

Couldn’t get into any of the big plo games tonight but it worked out well as I’m up $10, 000 now mostly from 1/2 plo!

Really couldn’t miss yesterday in all the important spots. AQJ99ds beat KKQTT on J76r with A on the turn in a 5! pot at spr .66, AJJ96 beat 88 on QT8r he donked pot on the turn 6c with no flush draw and I jammed he called drawing to only a board pair in a $3k pot and I held. Also 3! KKQJ9 and flopped T98 b/b and got called by a worse straight and still held on a board pairing back door flush completing river. (What a game!)

The monster premium AAT98ds also held against KK versus a short stack. Really was a filthy rungood session. People I know came over and asked what game I was playing and one of them even took my photo, lol.

Even won at my 10/25 hold em stand up game session getting value from my good hands.

Happy Mother’s Day! I’m going to visit to grab lunch with my family today to celebrate. Hope everyone can do something special for their moms today.

Last night after Mother’s Day lunch the games were not great, I was sitting at a table with a couple (never the best situation) at plo and she saw her husband’s straight but not mine at showdown lol. We ended up chopping but it was a little irritating to have a biased second dealer at the table. I ran poorly and also played so-so raising a little light one hand but also re-raising AKQQT and losing to 99532 and left for hold em where nothing really happened for an hour or two and decided to get an early sleep rather than waste my time in poor quality games for no reason. Lost under $2k.

Had a dream I was in New York City visiting a Chinese pizza restaurant three slices for $5 I only got 2. Also a quick dream about an evil genius. Strange combo.

Good session again, made over $5k in around 30 minutes then gave some back losing KJT76ds to two people with AA and AQQds to AKKss and AQJT8ds to a crappy king high. Won AKK65ds to AA all in pre and AJ864ds on 754dd my nut flush draw to 63 and two pair. Made around $4k on the session. Busy day of interviews today and hearing prep covering for a colleague. The game was very good when I quit but I needed my rest.

I was sun running so well my neighbor asked if he could lick my lucky butt hole…!

I was chatting with another player who was wondering if I wanted to go half on a condo or house in Florida and I remarked that my play quality is better now that I’m playing less and when I played full time a couple years ago if I put in even 3/4 of the volume I would probably have made a lot more money.

Had a long interveiw and hearing prep covering massive hospital docket for a colleague and got out late from work but played a quick session in the evening. Thankfully most of the cases will resolve and only two potential hearings that might not actually go forward. A couple clients asked me for my number aways a good sign. One asked what other law I practice. Another said she didn’t need to talk to me. Happens.

At plo lost a lot and made a slight comeback then lost again. Was at table with legend who I noticed ever since I sold the guide to is getting ever so slightly better. Lost AKQT9 to his k high junk on T87 his T7 boated right away at spr 1 in a 4! pot $350 pre $800 flop.

Today after possible hearings I will take it easy and recover from a grueling couple days of work before interview start again on Friday.

Enjoying hazelnut lattes now with oat milk mixed with 2% waiting for court to start.

Made $3, 000 yesterday. My client who I’ve been working to get out of the hospital got out finally! He’s with his family at home. Very happy, hope he stays out of the hospital.

Yesterday ran really good at plo at 1/2 making over $3k there but really bad at 5/5 plo which randomly ran and I made the poor decision to play as the smaller game was much better. Ended up breaking about even. Looking forward to the weekend. Still a really good month so far up around $28k only halfway through.

Br challenge is coming along well too. $32k of $60k left.

lost a bunch at 10/10/50/100 plo last night ran bad in the big spots where I was pushing a lot of equity. Set plus nut gutter versus two wraps AA nut gutter and flush draw against worse pair worse flush draw. Also lost some flips.
-$11, 000. Hope I get invited back at least.

Made a bet that a player would show up to the big plo game before 9pm with the game organizer and he did so he owed me $300. The organizer didn’t want me back last night because I instinctively reacted to the river one hand he was in and he says that messed him up. This guy from out of town wanted in the game and made a big stink sitting in the game almost forcing it to break and everyone waited him out until he left and did the same today but they didnt wait him out this time.

I offered the game runner to waive his $300 side bet if I could play and he said deal. (In reality I could play if I wanted to as there were open seats and the out of towner was playing but I didn’t want to piss off the game runner.) I got AJT98 all in pre against a whale with AKQT9 and lost and AJT75ds against his A99 and lost but ran good in side bets and ended up $2k. Also won $4.5k at 5/5 making straight flush against nut flush but getting blown off the winning hand by the same player later in the session, he turned his trips and naked ace of hearts in to a bluff in a dry side pot for some reason but it worked.

Made a decent come back from the other night at least. Could have been better but I’m not complaining. Also have realized that winning waterfalls/side bets is much more thrilling than winning a normal poker hand. Good thing I don’t play in the pits. (And never will!)

Played 5/5 plo and lost wrap to top set and nut straight plus top set to straight plus fd. Lost top pair nfd backdoor wrap to middle set. People were straddling $15 and I decided to straddle to $25, the maximum, and someone actually complained. Later a dealer who makes a lot of mistakes mixed the side and main pots and I asked him to double check the main pot was still right and he said “you care about $10?” Then he stopped the game because I left my bag on the rail of the table while I was talking to the floor and claimed he could not deal while the bag was there….

Reminded me why it’s healthy to have activities outside of poker.

I ran poorly at plo in most spots played but my short mixed session made up for it...we bantered. Joke of the night was from a jovial dude, he goes, "I was telling my friend I was thinking about killing myself and he said to me, 'why don't you just think about killing other people instead?'"
