British Politics

Been on holiday for a few weeks, surprised to find no general discussion of British politics so though I'd kick one off.

Makerfield polls are closed. Most extraordinary bi election ever? UK political event of the century?

So Burnham won with over 50% on a very high turnout. Many factors but once gain evidence that people will vote if they think (correctly or not) for someone they think will do stuff. lol tories who got 2% are now completely irrelevant.

In other bi-election news tories won south aberdeen. Labour scrapped into 4th place.

It took me several reads to get what you're saying. You don't have to be grammatically perfect but you could try a little harder.

Great result for Burnham, terrible for Starmer, the Tories and Greens. Burnham might get a longer honeymoon period with the voters than Starmer did due to being more likeable (or less dislikeable) but still looks like a placeholder for Reform. Hope I'm wrong.

sorry not my finest effort. I just hope burnham understands that first and foremost, it's doing stuff that matters. I'm not over-hopeful but I do think him and Milliband (who is likely to be a big player) benefit from their experience of office and past failures. They are better equipped to understand what the likes of mcsweeney are peddling.

That's so British , on par with putting people in prison for free speech!

I think the Tories would have been happy to see Reform win in Makerfield. As funny as it would have been to see Burnham lose, I'm glad he won. He's an infinitely better politician than Starmer. That said, I think Starmer has done a better job than many give him credit for (not to say he's done a great job, just not nearly as bad as many make out), particularly on the international stage.

I think if Labour put Burnham, Milliband (Treasury), Starmer (FO) and Harman (HO) up they will take some beating. Of course, that's never going to happen - it will be sycophants like Louise Haigh and the awful Rayner who will be brought back.

I like Starmer and would vote for him, but he looks dead in the water at this point. The Labour party is so utterly divided that leading it is nearly impossible, but I think Burnham might just have enough pull on both sides to hold things together long enough to win an election. I can't think of a politician who I have agreed with more on issues over the past 2-3 years than Bur

Reposting this from 5 years ago to sum up the current situation.

Starmer is probably hanging on for the World Cup final tickets.

Remarkable transformation of the people of Makerfield, in going from salt of the earth working class to thick as pig **** Northerners.

Goodby and good riddance, c[]nt

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss

Site is back. Been down for days but I don't think we missed anything important

Yeah apart from your PM resigning and Jeffrey Donaldson being found guilty on all 18 counts as well as a mass stabbing in Edinburgh. But other than that all quiet.

Authorities and media are calling it a hate crime and terrorism. Most of the time when this happens, everyone is quick to declare it a mental health emergency and rule out terrorism. Wonder what is different this time?

You better hope the new guy does something about your immigration problem or you won’t have a country anymore.

Mongo you should check this out I reckon you'll love it

Countries are defined by borders, not the racial composition of its people (which change over time anyway), dumbass.

Now now, we all know your country would be far better off with Tommy Robinson as PM. (As would mine be with Conor McCregor)

Absolutely. Unless and I accept it's a small hope, he actually has/develops some real policies to change things. The small hope is slightly helped by it being possible he is aware what will happen if all he has is empty vacuous bullshit instead of something people can genuinely get enthusiastic about.

Against that, it's really hard. Starmer squandered the great opportunity we had while burnham is starting with his back to the wall.

Some press stories (which may well be highly speculative) suggest burnham would like starmer to stay for a little bit so he can better prepare to take over. kier (i always put the country first) starmer is sticking up two fingers.

Maybe they will engineer a leadership challenge just to give burnham a bit more time. Remember that time some MPs lent no-hoper Corbyn their votes so that he could stand.

Lol they should get Corbyn to stand for the shits n giggles

burnham would like starmer to stay for a little bit so he can have the summer off.

Rumours that Burnham is in favour of replacing Council Tax and Stamp Duty with a Proportional Property Tax set at 0.48% of market value (0.96% for second homes) are hard to believe when the South East would be hit hard. Even three bed terrace houses here cost in excess of the break even point of £500k, so most house owners in the South East will be net losers.

The Valuation Office would need to be expanded, or I don't know where the market values would come from - Zoopla estimates are often wildly inaccurate.

Personally despite the hit I'm very much in favour of it but I don't expect it to happen.
