The NHL Thread
For the 5 of us who post NHL stuff, here you go. Officially the season starts Tuesday October 11, although there were tw
also the dickinson and murphy signings seem meh at best. murphy's one of those guys who has basically never been good afaict, is his dad a billionaire or something? otherwise i don't get it
it's joever for the loilers 😀

Just baffles me on the moves they make . Personally I hope Mcdavid pulls a Brady move next year . The reality is they will still make the playoffs with two of the best players in the world .
I wish that no trade contracts were banned
if the loilers are out of the playoffs, he'll be moved this year
Bettman said they’ve agreed to a $3.5 billion total investment fee and closing arena build if they go ahead with expansion to Houston or Austin with the Friedkin family.
expansion usually happens in 2s, so i wonder who the other team would be. have seen some rumblings lately about going back to atlanta again...
oh yeah and brady tkachuk to florida for a bunch of picks. i'm sure yall heard by now
Capitals acquire Jordan Kyrou from Blues for Connor McMichael, Milton Gastrin, and Pick 16
To OTT - William Eklund, Kasper Halttunen, rights to Brandon Svoboda
To SJS - 2026 9th OA
draft week, trades all over. it's all happening
St. Louis finally manages to dump Kyrou for some reason. I heard some random guy insist that Kyrou's poor attitude is the biggest problem there, so if they win the cup next year, you heard it here second
No idea what to make of the Calgary-NJ trade. Default assumption is Calgary lost obv
Ottawa seems to have done well getting Eklund and that makes the Tkachuck deal look much better too. Now let's see when Florida unveils the MAGA alternate jerseys
Does anyone else think it has been a odd/weird off season so far already?
yeah, player empowerment era is in full effect. so now you get stuff like brady getting traded with 2 years left on his contract because he's already told them he's going to florida. used to be 1 year, and guys would rarely leave even when their contracts did run down.
related: quinn hughes has 1 year remaining, i would be stunned if he's not in new jersey next season, but stranger things have happened. should be a lot of this stuff going forward
not a ncaa football fan, but this seems similar to the transition into the nil era. bit of a culture shock, but it is what it is. somewhat concerning for the canadian teams if they're all about to be treated like red-headed stepchildren so to speak, but i imagine a lot of guys will hang around if they believe in the project and/or target guys who don't want to live in magaland
Wait, Buffalo got the 4th overall pick and a second for Bowen Byram? Deary me
Byram and Greenway to Chicago for 4th overall, #45 pick and Louis Crevier
[Luszczyszn] Where do the Blackhawks think they are right now that they wouldn’t just draft whatever defenseman is right in front of them? Like the chances that guy is going to be better than byram are probably north of 50% right? Insane
dom hates it for chicago, so gj buffalo perhaps
sounds like san jose is shopping the #2 pick too. i didn't really buy any of this stuff because nobody ever trades top picks, but it seems like everyone is losing their minds rn. lots of bad teams trying to fast track their rebuilds, patient teams will probably be better off.
edit:
With Chicago reportedly trading the 4th overall pick to Buffalo, this marks the first time since 2008 that a top 5 pick has been knowingly traded
The last one was the Islanders receiving a second round pick from the Leafs to move down from 5 to 7 on the draft floor.
yeah, exactly
though with sj it sounds like they might just be moving down a few spots, which is more defensible. but everyone seems to think that stenberg is great so idk about that. i don't really trust that grier knows what he's doing
Teams trading draft picks away like this is the worst draft in history.
Tell me this is not true Babcocks contract is 2 years 25 mill ? That is what google is telling me
Babcock becomes the 19th coach in Oilers history and sixth since McDavid was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. Edmonton's captain is a five-time Ted Lindsay Award winner as most outstanding player voted on by the NHL Players' Association (including this season) and is entering the first season of a two-year, $25 million contract (average annual value of $12.5 million) he signed Oct. 6, 2025.
Lol no that's McDavid. Look at the signing date
Wild’s pursuit of Dylan Larkin could direct their entire offseason and future: Wild made a big offer for Tkachuk, per league sources. Wild's offer was arguably better but Senators had no choice but to accept the Panthers’ offer because Tkachuk, who had a no-move clause
want this to be true so bad. wild don't pick until the 3rd round this year, don't have a 2nd round pick until 2029, etc. trade everything futilely trying to get quinn hughes to stay. trade everything you got left for dylan larkin lol
About Matthew Knies: Word of discussions with Buffalo and the 4th overall pick. San Jose also said to be of interest here as well. Montreal remains interested, but hard to compete with the above teams.
bro sucks (aka wayyy overrated for some reason), whoever "wins" this loses
'This is what we want': Oilers' McDavid all in on Babcock as coach
“I’m excited about that challenge to be pushed by a coach,” he concluded, “because it's been a really long time in Edmonton.”
“The definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result,” McDavid said. “Babs is different. He gives us a different personality, a different approach to our group, and an approach that we’ve probably have never had.
“We've tried it the same way for a really long time. Let's try it different.”
the problem isn't that the loilers have a bunch of players that suck, it's that they haven't had a psychopath coach to yell at, bully, harass, abuse, etc them. that will make them good players ..... ****ing somehow(??)

Looks like GPT pulled that paragraph from this article.
https://www.nhl.com/news/mike-babcock-hi...
I can’t find the details either. His contract with Toronto in 2015 was 8 for $50.
Columbus contract was only 2 for $8.
I’ll guess something like 3-4 for $15-$20.
Jason Robertson supposedly offered 8 for 96m by the stars. And a lot of talking heads have said they expect him to decline it. Says he wants 14m per year and he's not happy playing here anyway because his reputation is he's great in the regular season and then disappears in the playoffs, although he was good last season.
Also seems to somehow blame playing for the Stars as the reason he was left off of the Olympic team. Deadline for a trade seems to be before the draft starts tomorrow. As far as I know he doesn’t have a no trade clause. I don't think he'll be happy playing for a team with enough cap space to sign him for what he wants.
With the cap exploding, no good player should sign for 8 years. But they are all risk averse idiots
speaking of risk-adverse idiots:
Leipold on Quinn Hughes: "We are going to re-sign him. The question will be for how long. We would like to go as long as we could. He will probably want it to be a little shorter -- shorter being maybe three years. We hopefully will end up at five."
bro, you're 1 year away from having 32 teams bidding for you on the open market, being able to play where ever you want. your brothers are in nj, who just hired a smart gm. wtf are you doing
imma lol so hard, he deserves to waste the rest of his prime in minnesota getting shitkicked by the avs and stars etc

Now when they suck he can blame leaving on Babcock.
I don't know man. He had a **** year this year, but has been a playoff monster (best xG% on Leafs last 2 playoffs). Was also good last year (2nd on team xG% in regular season).
Leafs were a shambles this year and he's only 23, so if can probably be forgiven. Habs fans seem disappointed the deadline day fell through at the last second and now it seems the Leafs want way more to move him.
I think I'm fine with the Habs standing pat though. Keep our prospects so we have the flexibility of good players on ELCs 2-3 years down the road. The Atlantic is a murderer's row so it's probably better to move your window back than try to go all in now.
