Climate Change - increasingly horrible disasters loom
...............
there is so much out there about this - I don't really need to provide a lot of sources - a quick google
Climate change contributes to wildfire risk in 3 very fundamental ways.
1) It warms the air which leads to more evaporation. Dryer burns better.
2) It expands the breeding cycles of bark beetles. More beetles eating the trees weakens them.
3) It also amplifies weather extremes including wind. Windier makes wildfire spread further and faster.
I'm located in Detroit and can confirm it is ****ing horrendous outside.

Yes but 80-85% of wildfires are caused by humans ( careless cigarettes, quads, unattended or poorly extinguished campfires and arson. Also horrible forest management practices lead to worse fires . Though drier conditions do lead to worse fires
I agree but blaming forest fires on climate change is wrong . Take two of the biggest wildfires on populations LA and Jasper Alberta one was arson and one was mismanagement
The problem is as it gets hotter what do people buy more of AC which consumes power....
Almost all of what we're observing over the last century.
Aside from some massive category 8 volcanic explosions (Toba, Yellowstone) and the natural transition in and out of glacial cycles every 100k years, there is nothing like what is happening in the present over the last several million years.

Who supplies your talking points? You got a degree from Climate Denier University?
So. Cal rain in the fall months preceding the wildfire was 10% of normal. The Santa Ana winds were blowing at 100MPH.
Humans start fires. But they don't create the fuel supply or the wind that makes them take off and difficult to subdue.

Hey I didn't say climate change isn't real . Empty reservoirs and please provide proof that winds were at 100 mph .
Im just saying don't say climate change causes more fires

The World Cup final scheduled for Sunday is at risk due to air quality.
A 2700% increase in American exposure to extreme smoke days in a single decade. A wonderful example of the exponential increase in the progression of climate change consequences.
Input from a Canadian near the GTA who is experiencing the smoke and bad air quality from some of these fires, but not as bad as those to the S/W of me, ie Windsor and Detroit.
My nephew is a climatologist at the University of Alberta and has told me this before, I think it was 2023.
In the US more fires are caused by humans than other causes but the real bad ones are caused by lightning. The reason is, human caused ones are typically reported early and are put out relatively quickly. Lightning strikes tend to cause fires in remote areas, especially dry areas and get big and expansive before humans ever get to them.
In Canada it's about 50/50 since we have much larger unpopulated areas and also our lightning strikes tend to hit in what is called the boreal forests dominated by fir trees which are much more flammable. Not that we have more lightning (we don't) but because so much of our land mass is forest it appears like we cause more smoke, etc.
Some of the US, mostly northern states, have similar causal/effects.
This also has an effect on climate change and creates a feedback loop (self-reinforcing). As we get warmer and dryer there are more large forest fires which burn more forestry and that reduces the amount of CO2 absorbed by forests, which feeds into the atmosphere and also producing carbon which accelerates the effect.
I fear for my children and grandchildren. My great grandchildren
will likely never make it. I hope I'm (and my nephew) are wrong.

The best we can do is not give up. We were born to struggle for the betterment of our descendants.
I'm grateful for your willingness to contribute. You're not alone.
How come you post stuff you don't even read yourself?
The article said that the gusts 'reportedly exceeded 80 MPH.' (emphasis added)
I didn't see anything about 100MPH, but wouldn't be the first time I missed a detail like that.

Absolutely.
Unfortunately it's long past the time when indulging in fantasy instead of focusing on the practical becomes effectively giving up. It's even worse than giving up where it slows down the practical efforts.
Indeed but one is happening albeit too slowly while one is in the 'might as well just pray' camp
anything that slows down the development and rolling out of green technology is a disaster* when we desperately need to be doing it as fast as possible.
*a disaster that is a catastrophic own goal when it comes from those who aren't deniers.

You have the Neville Chamberlain approach to climate change. An unwillingness to address the fundamental truth of consumption as the true enemy.
No one is arguing against the implementation of green technology that you point to as the solution. Lots of green technology is being implemented.
But dirty technology is not declining while green technology is advancing. They are just being added to each other.
Your unwillingness to confront the enemy and ban the consumption which is dependent upon dirty technology doesn't add up. That's your fantasy.

I'll defend chamberlain. He rearmed and installed the ground defenses etc that led directly to us winning the war. Your failure to understand the dynamics of the tipping point that occurs as green tech move ahead of dirty tech is bizarre
Dirty is only still advancing to the extent it is still ahead of green tech. The green tech is and will continue to overtake - we need to do this as fast as possible. Don't slow it down, speed it up

Your silence on consumption is deafening.
