I guess in some twisted way, this is a show of American balance? You have two people who are nearly complete opposites. One asking what can everyone do for their nation, and the other asking what the nation can do for them.

Insider trading certainly, but bootlegging -- not really, no. What Joe Sr actually did (and he already possessed a large fortune, quite largely made in real estate and Hollywood) was to import a vast quantity of Scotch, held in bond on 'medicinal use' certificates, against the day that Prohibition was repealed -- in effect gambling on whisky futures. This would be fairly similar to buying gold in the UK in 1929-30, betting that the Government would have to come off the Gold Standard and then the gold price (fixed until then) would rise. Which duly happened in late '31.

I think the biggest problem for folks around here is that you bring it up in virtually every thread.
I have acknowledged many times that both parties are almost equally evil and disgusting.
But saying it in every other post isn't likely to create converts. But it is almost certain to make you annoying to folks, even for people like me who essentially agree with you.

As best I can tell, both of FDR's grandfathers died before the first laws restricting the importation of opium were passed in the United States.
P.S. -- I see now. His maternal grandfather was smuggling opium into China, not the U.S.
Im not sure I've actually heard the cockwomble answer a question given to him in quite some time now. He just rambles on about snakes or leaks or whatever, and seems to not even understand what he's being asked.
