Edit: RULES FOR THIS THREAD
Posting guidelines for Politics and Soci...
These are our baselines. We're not reinventing the wheel here. If you aren't sure if something is acceptable to post, its better to ask first. If you think someone is posting something that violates the above guidelines, please report it or PM me rather than responding in kind.
To reiterate some of the points:
1. No personal attacks. This is a broad instruction, but, in general, we want to focus on attacking an argument rather than the poster making it. It is fine to say a post is antisemitic; it is not okay to call someone an antisemite over and over. If you believe someone is making antisemitic posts, report them or PM me. The same goes for calling people "baby killers" and "genocide lovers". You are allowed to argue that an action supports genocide or that the consequences of certain policies results in the death of children, but we are no longer going to be speaking to one another's intentions. It is not productive to the conversation and doesn't further any debate.
2. Racist posts and other bigoted statements that target a particular group or individuals of such groups with derogatory comments are not allowed. This should not need further explanation.
3. Graphic Images need to be in spoilers with a trigger warning.
4. Wishing Harm on other posters will result in an immediate timeout.
5. Genocidal statements such as "Kill 'em all" etc, are no longer permissible in the thread.
If anyone has any questions about the above, please PM me. I don't want a discussion about the rules to derail the content of this thread. If anything needs clarifying, I will do that in this thread.
Please be aware this thread is strictly moderated
no it didnt. they stopped suicide bombing bc they were able to establish domestic weapons production and import. it was a political decision.
Neither attempts were car bombs. The Brighton bomb was far, far bigger than that. You’re probably confusing them with the car bomb that killed a prominent Tory MP in the HoP car park.
What brought the IRA to the negotiating table was it being rendered impotent by widespread infiltration that may even have included both its leader and the head of Sinn Fein.
Nevertheless the point remains that ultimately freedom fighters/terrorists must usually be negotiated with to achieve peace.
Not when they are religious fanatics.
Well, well, well. Fox News ran a piece on the slaughter of journalists by Israel.
Reports are that Hezbollah now wants a "ceasefire" untethered to the Gaza conflict, where everyone just goes back to the status quo. Israel is demanding that Hezbollah basically agrees to the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 it agreed to in 2006 and immediately broke, where they retreat above the Litani River.
Given Hezbollah's actions the last 18 years, especially the last year, Israel's demands seem very reasonable. Really, Hezbollah needs to disband as a state within a state militia, and convert itself completely into a Lebanese political party.
Even if you think Hezbollah had some productive purpose at some point in the past, it is clear in 2024 it serves no productive purpose for Lebanon, and is a huge net negative. It is pretty ironic that Hezbollah markets itself as a necessary force to stop Israel invading Lebanon, and yet in this century the only 2 times Israel has invaded Lebanon is in direct response to Hezbollah initiating violence. So basically in practice they are accomplishing the exact opposite of what they market themselves as.
And this is on top of all the social and political instability they cause inside Lebanon and all the war crimes they commit in Syria.
what reports? post a link or something.
Hezbollah doesnt even have hardly any upper level leadership left. how are they agreeing to ceasefires that go against their entire ideology of the last 40 years?
you are almost certainly getting your facts missed up. reports were that Nasrallah agreed to a 21 day ceasefire so long as it was ok with Hamas and included Gaza. then they killed him. I made a post in this thread like a week ago outlining that.
Was coming in to ask if anyone thinks Israel will pull back if the going on the ground gets too rough on the ground or if their ego will get in the way.
Guess those pansy Hezbollah already giving up.

Hezbollah fired 150 rockets at Haifa yesterday. I dont really think it is an ego thing. Israel realizes what a existential disaster it has been allowing the IRI to have a proxy army on their border, and realize they need to remove it, whatever it takes. Obviously, Hezbollah agreeing to leave and then actually honoring their word would be the best case scenario, but short of that Israel has to continue using force.
As far as Hezbollah "giving up," I think it is more IRI is trying to cut its losses. Unlike other proxies who have varying degrees of autonomy, Hezbollah really just operates as an extension of the IRI. And the current conflict in Lebanon is becoming more of a liability to the IRI than advantageous.
But as Victor implies, threatening Israel is the main reason for Hezbollah's existence, so if Hezbollah agrees to stop threatening Israel, then what purpose does it even have anymore? So possibly Hezbollah will refuse to leave the border, and hope Israel decides the juice isn't worth the squeeze and leaves regardless.

Yeah I would agree with that regarding the IRI. The more Israel bombs Beirut, the more pressure Iran will feel to do something which for self preservation reasons they probably are not in a big hurry. Also Israel has spent a year in Gaza already which is still a slog and they're a large reserve army. I'm sure they'd love to not have to do a big ground invasion of southern Lebanon. So could be a win/win although lacking closure.
The again
Israel said it is expanding its ground operation in Lebanon with the deployment of a fourth division. The number of Israeli troops on the ground is now likely to number 15,000. The rapid deployment of four divisions operating across south Lebanon, alongside evacuation orders for Lebanese villages on the coast upwards of 20 miles from the blue line and the intensive bombing of the country’s south and east and the capital, suggests Israel is preparing for a wider push north against the Lebanese militia.

Netanyahu hasn't left a way out afaics. It's destroy lebanon or lose.
Israel's prime minister has urged the Lebanese people to throw out Hezbollah and avoid "destruction and suffering like we see in Gaza".
Might be an admission of a war crime in gaza as well
I’m wondering if Israel just take the opportunity that Russia is already having a plate full of $h!t to deal with and can’t back up their “friends” in the Middle East for now .
lol
I haven't really followed this thread but just wanted to chime in and say how great of a job Netanyahu is doing eradicating the terrorists. My particular favorite was the blowing up of the pagers. I mean... Hamas literally can't feel safe anywhere anymore.
And could you imagine if this all played out with a more liberal leader and not a hard liner like Netanyahu. It would have been plea bargains and negotiating to get the hostages back, not kicking ass and removing every last Hamas leader.
An update on a normal day in Israel, where no civilian are attacked, only military targets.
Husband and wife dead at the city of kiryat Shmona, from a rocket attack.
7 wounded, including 2 in critical condition, from a stabbing attack in the city of Hadera.
Medium level injury to a civilian driving his car next to the city of Kiryat Atta.
15 rockets were fired to my Kibbutz, all shot down by the iron dome.
Victor... Comments please
oh they are def targeting civilians now. I think I posted that a few days ago when they started hitting Haifa and Tel Aviv.
dont act like this is out of nowhere, Nasrallah promised that they would if Israel continued escalating. Id say wiping out apartment buildings, fire stations, paramedics, villages.
NYT piece on what American medical workers observed while volunteering in Gaza, including many children shot it in the head…

Its awful. But also entirely predictable. Netanyahu might be selling pain for the other side only but the reality won't be anything like that.
The Israeli military have fired 355 bullets at a child, and then fired on the rescue workers who came to save her.
the stuff going on in Jabalia right now is just liquidation. a few days ago they bombed many parts of the camp and then sent fliers telling people to leave. then snipers and quadcopters fired on them. now they have blockaded the roads out and are just murdering every civilian they see. and they have ordered the hospital to evacuate and leave the injured and sick to die. they also bombed the tent camp around the hospital and killed like 15.
