Ukraine-Russia War Take 2

Ukraine-Russia War Take 2

Here is what the preliminary take on the Ukraine thread disappearing is:

The site was hit with a massive spam attack where hundreds of spam threads were created. In the case where, for example, I see a single spam thread and delete it, that is called a soft delete, and mods can still see them but forum members cannot. Those deletion can be undone.

When a massive attack hits with hundreds of threads, an admin uses a different procedure where the hundreds of spam threads are merged and then hard deleted, where the threads are gone, and no note is left behind. As I have mentioned with my own experience of just soft deleting a large number of posts, sometimes a post or thread gets checked or merged accidentally and is deleted by mistake. Dealing with hundreds of spam threads takes a sledgehammer, not a scalpel.

It appears that our Ukraine thread may have gotten caught up in that recent net of spam threads. If so, it is likely gone for good. I cant say this for sure, and am awaiting comments from admins on this issue. Yes, this sucks. And hopefully there was some other software glitch that caused the disappearance, and we may recover it in the future.

But in the meantime, I have created this new Ukraine-Russia War thread to enable the conversation to continue. Obviously continuity with earlier discussions will be lost. There is no way around that. So as best as possible, let's pick up the conversation with recent events and go from there.

If you have any questions about this, please post them in the mod thread, not here. Let's keep this thread going with posts about the war, not the disappearance of the old thread.

Thanks.

when Israel did terror bombing in like Lebanon and Palestine (and Syria for that matter) tame_deuces supported it

Zelensky really couldn't keep his mouth shut - why would he question Vance like that? I understand he wouldn't have had a media conference like that which went for so long - but when he questioned Vance that was it. All the wheels fell apart from him and I think any chance of peace but I think that could have been his intention as I don't think he truly wants any peace deal he is just banking on America supporting their efforts to stop Russia from invading Poland. And for that he is completely out of line that he needs to settle this thing as he can't win it alone and he shouldn't put Europe at risk.

Zelensky is an actor, literally an actor. He has no military experience.

Trump is the former frontman of a reality TV show. And has far less experience of conflict than Zelensky.

Just say never defend yourself vs an invader ?

You can defend with diplomacy. Like Georgia in 2008 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Geor...
This example is more relevant than some WW2 Hitler arguments.

Georgia agreed to a peace deal, Ukraine decided to fight. We can compare results of those 2 strategies.

Or preventing color revolutions like Belarus and not dissing Russia - is also a strategy to not even deal with any invasions

Zelensky really couldn't keep his mouth shut -

He could hardly get a word in edgeways with those two idiots yelling and finger-jabbing at him.

Ukraine decided to fight.

No, Putin decided to invade.

they really dress him down here. almost feel sorry for him but naw.

Actually he dressed himself down. If I was Trump I would have told that twerp to go put on a collard shirt.

ask the Germans how great their economy is doing after after Biden blew up the pipeline that provided gas for cheap.

That's like the one thing Biden got right in 4 years.

If Zelensky would have just shut up and listened instead of trying to act tough in front of Trump this could have gone a lot better. He needs to let go of his ego and bow to the Don.

Supposedly Russian state media wasn't approved to be in the media scrum today but cleared security and attended. Not sure if that is legit

Is Trump a full on Russian asset at this point? Are we there yet?

It's all about common sense now. Watch as all of these wars come to an end and people still whine about how bad Trump is.

Zelensky was asked multiple questions by Vance then instead of letting him answer they both started shouting over him.

Typically when someone asks a question, they shut up and listen, not the other way around.

I'm sure in mong world refusing to listen and shouting over someone is strength but in reality thats what weak pathetic individuals do when their position is too weak to defend

yep. I think we got there when he called Zelensky a dictator and would not say the same about Putin.

Didn't want to cross his boss.

I've only seen clips. I'll watch it in its entirety to get the full context. I've always thought Z was a whiney little punk. His voice is very annoying. You may very well be correct here.

A staffer from TASS, a Russian outlet that often promotes glorified coverage of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, was briefly in the room for President Donald Trump’s bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. American media mainstays Reuters and the Associated Press were not granted access.

Well that's not my position so the question is moot

There was a time when you wanted countries to provide military aid to Ukraine? I honestly didn't think that was your view.

What is the point of having these public discussions? (the TV meeting)
I'd like to hear theories about this, it feels like a pretty recent behavior in politics.

There is no point, it was a mistake that may very well never be walked back. For diplomacy to work, you need to resolve or work around your differences before you speak in public. Then you can shout and be angry as much as you want without the fallout.

It's cos the clowns don't really know what they're doing when it comes to being diplomatic and statesmen.

Or maybe they do, and wanted all the drama cos it feeds their... egos, base support, that sort of thing?

It makes for nice news. They come together, touch on some light talking points, maybe disagree respectfully on a point or two, shake hands, smile for the camera, and everyone feels good about it.

It was set up quite hostile from the start here unfortunately, and seems they just wanted Zelensky to kiss the ring very publicly after framing him as the invading dictator

I'd love to see the thread Freak Daddy was talking about making that shows all the evidence Trump is a Russian asset because its something I preach on a lot that current right wing messaging is lock step with Russian media and **** like this just seems like we are putting on a show for RSM

The pivot to Russia and away from Europe seems really odd. Really really odd. I have seen decades of American antipathy towards Russia... even stronger antipathy than most of Europe... and now, this.

Being cooler on Europe and Nato, I kind of get, if you want to be isolationist, but the whole Russia loving thing is odd. Really, really odd.

That Russia pays enormous amounts to far right and nationalist-adjacent conservative politicians, influencers and media personalities to further their cause is the worst kept secret in international politics. Those who take the money once will be blackmailed into continuing to take them.

They also conduct an effective information war online, both targeted and through bot networks. This doesn't just target right wing networks, but all kinds of groups. The groups who are prone to being isolated from outside or contrary views are always the weakest to these efforts. We've likely all at some point fell for this information war, as it is also very effective when there is partisan divides.

I agree. Televising that meeting was idiotic. When the cameras are on, people inevitably need to grandstand.

It would have gone fine if it was Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in there instead. They would have looked strong without embarrassing the country.

Yes, Kamala would have looked like a strong leader like she always has. She might laugh at some point which would trigger her critics, but so what?
