Ukraine-Russia War Take 2
Here is what the preliminary take on the Ukraine thread disappearing is:
The site was hit with a massive spam attack where hundreds of spam threads were created. In the case where, for example, I see a single spam thread and delete it, that is called a soft delete, and mods can still see them but forum members cannot. Those deletion can be undone.
When a massive attack hits with hundreds of threads, an admin uses a different procedure where the hundreds of spam threads are merged and then hard deleted, where the threads are gone, and no note is left behind. As I have mentioned with my own experience of just soft deleting a large number of posts, sometimes a post or thread gets checked or merged accidentally and is deleted by mistake. Dealing with hundreds of spam threads takes a sledgehammer, not a scalpel.
It appears that our Ukraine thread may have gotten caught up in that recent net of spam threads. If so, it is likely gone for good. I cant say this for sure, and am awaiting comments from admins on this issue. Yes, this sucks. And hopefully there was some other software glitch that caused the disappearance, and we may recover it in the future.
But in the meantime, I have created this new Ukraine-Russia War thread to enable the conversation to continue. Obviously continuity with earlier discussions will be lost. There is no way around that. So as best as possible, let's pick up the conversation with recent events and go from there.
If you have any questions about this, please post them in the mod thread, not here. Let's keep this thread going with posts about the war, not the disappearance of the old thread.

Volodymyr Zelensky said he was ready to work under Donald Trump's "strong leadership" to achieve a lasting peace days after their explosive Oval Office meeting.
The Ukrainian president described the White House showdown as "regrettable" in a lengthy social media post in the wake of the US announcing a pause in military aid to Kyiv.
Zelensky said "it was time to make things right", after Trump had accused him of not being ready to come to the negotiating table.
He also reiterated that Ukraine was ready to sign a minerals deal with the US, after the failure to do so at the Washington meeting, and outlined a proposal for how the war might stop.
Zelensky said Friday's meeting "did not go the way it was supposed to be", adding: "It is regrettable that it happened this way," he wrote. "It is time to make things right. We would like future co-operation and communication to be constructive."

Well there is a reality that will be bumped up against. And there are some who are subject to disillusionment, maybe more so in Europe than in the U.S.
When Russia forces a peace deal and doesn't advance into Poland what are these warmongers going to say then? Will they just start WW3 at that point by some unilateral terrorist action as with the pipelines? It's like these people in DC and Brussels would literally rather destroy human civilization than just admit they were wrong.

We need to preserve national sovereignty and cultural heritage. 3rd world migration to 1st world isn't going to help 3rd world countries and only weakens all 1st world countries. Russia is a horrible country to live in with incredibly low quality of life and they actively engage in warmongering.
On top of that Putin is a serial war criminal. He is a constant threat to the democratic world and actively disrupts peace and prosperity around the globe.

Russia had the best banking system in the world and an extremely strong economy under Czar Nicholas until the global banking cartel installed the Bolscheviks who also happened to murder 60 million people....and we know who they are.

If Putin invades Poland or sends hypersonic missiles into Brussels or performs any such insane acts of war against Europe I will contact the biggest neoliberal I know and tell them I surrender my vote and all my political allegiance to them. I will become a Democratic Party loyalist and volunteer strategist or even janitor - whatever they want me to do. I will write their propaganda I will get a nurses assistant license and wipe the Clinton's buttholes when they get bedridden and tell them I feel their pain of their bedsores and sneak Bill Viagra and young interns.
I pledge all this and more because it will never happen. Russia has been drawing this line in the sand for 3 decades. Nothing they are doing is unpredictable or anything they haven't thought out and reviewed many times over these last 3 decades. It's not a plan of aggression but defense, a very reasonable defense. Recall that we almost blew up the world when Russia merely, in reaction to our hostile actions in Europe, put nuclear weapons in Cuba.

Yes when the oligarchs go spend our money on jet skis and coke and hookers that is exactly what they are doing, having fun. Just as we do, many countries spend way more on their military than is reasonably justified. Because Russia has no natural borders and has been a target for many invasions, they are an easy propaganda target.

The Black Sea ports and access are seen as strategically vital. Not to mention, there are a lot of ethnic Russians there. Russia will see Ukraine be a buffer state. I think very few people (and I'm not one of them) fully understand the significance of the area to Russian security concerns. But the point is Russia understands. They have articulated the significance and what they are willing to risk to protect it from NATO control.
I don't know how to defeat Russia militarily or choke it economically. I just know they protect Ukraine from the West like a boxer protects his chin.

Russia is fairly shitty outside of major cities yes.
But Ukraine was objectively worse in all regards even pre 2022, hopelessly corrupt the same as Russia and with 1/3 of the per Capita GDP.
You can hate Putin and at the same time admit that Ukraine was a worthless shithole country that had it been on the other side of Russia on the map we wouldn't have moved a finger to help.
The sanctification of Ukraine and zelensky in particular is as insane as the denial that Putin is a threat and should be coerced to behave differently.
Russia attacking Ukraine was like a big mafia group attacking a small mafia group.
You can arm the small mafia group so that the two mafias have a prolonged war and many mafiosos die (which is always good for everyone else), and that can be a reasonable choice, but you never at any point start considering the small mafia group your ally, your friend, someone you care about inherently.
Now the war did go as planned by the people who wanted to weaken both mafias.
Both countries are hopelessly ****ed up with collapsing demographics that can never be fixed having lost so many working age people both to war itself, and because they fled never to come back again.
We (the side that wants Putin to be weak) did win in those terms.
Yes maybe prolonging this EVEN more would put more nails in Putin coffin but the core goal of structurally weakening him has been achieved.
And republicans were crucial to achieve that, without their support help to Ukraine would have dried up a long time ago.

Russia depleted their impressive USSR era stockpile of military gear, lost more than a million working age men (counting deaths + severe permanent disabilities), lost a couple of millions of central Asian immigrants which were previously core workers in many sectors in various area of the country.
All at the fairly low price of approx 600 bucks per american over 3 years, most of which was spent on American companies building equip to send to Ukraine.
The USA can call it a day and chalk it up as a strategic win for them
