Ukraine-Russia War Take 2
Here is what the preliminary take on the Ukraine thread disappearing is:
The site was hit with a massive spam attack where hundreds of spam threads were created. In the case where, for example, I see a single spam thread and delete it, that is called a soft delete, and mods can still see them but forum members cannot. Those deletion can be undone.
When a massive attack hits with hundreds of threads, an admin uses a different procedure where the hundreds of spam threads are merged and then hard deleted, where the threads are gone, and no note is left behind. As I have mentioned with my own experience of just soft deleting a large number of posts, sometimes a post or thread gets checked or merged accidentally and is deleted by mistake. Dealing with hundreds of spam threads takes a sledgehammer, not a scalpel.
It appears that our Ukraine thread may have gotten caught up in that recent net of spam threads. If so, it is likely gone for good. I cant say this for sure, and am awaiting comments from admins on this issue. Yes, this sucks. And hopefully there was some other software glitch that caused the disappearance, and we may recover it in the future.
But in the meantime, I have created this new Ukraine-Russia War thread to enable the conversation to continue. Obviously continuity with earlier discussions will be lost. There is no way around that. So as best as possible, let's pick up the conversation with recent events and go from there.
If you have any questions about this, please post them in the mod thread, not here. Let's keep this thread going with posts about the war, not the disappearance of the old thread.

The United States is pausing military aid to Ukraine, days after US President Donald Trump clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the Oval Office, a White House official confirmed with Reuters on Monday.

I am not defending Trump, but Zelensky stating the end of the war is very far away was pretty horrible diplomacy, given Trump keeps stating he thinks the war could end soon.
Even if you believe Trump is full of **** and the war really is far from ending, just dumb diplomacy to counteract him publicly like that.
he could have just said something along the lines he agrees the war could end quickly if Russian retreats and there is real security guarantees, and maybe it plays better.

We'll see. While winning the information war and getting the US to cave was their only way to anything not resembling a loss, they'll still have to capitalize on it.
Right now, they don't have much to push with. Of course, Ukraine doesn't have to much to defend with either, they're scraping the bottom of the barrel for recruits.
The next prong of the Russian disinformation war will be to split Europe further than it already is. As we can see from the not-so-subtle change in talking points that our resident MAGAts, nationalists and tankies bring in from social media, this is already well underway.

One thing I haven't heard much about is that some major comms in Ukraine use StarLink. That's now unreliable at best and should be considered compromised imo.

When was the last time a history book had anything good to say about the US? I dont recall very much pushback when the left was peddling out anti-American smears like the 1619 project and tearing down statues of Washington and Lincoln.

When the Soviets put nukes in Cuba we almost blew up the planet over what we saw as an unacceptable encroachment. Russia has been saying for 30 years that a parallel installation in Ukraine is a red line and an existential issue. Of course they are going to seize the momentum and try to force these truculent fascists in Ukraine to heel. At least their doing so doesn't put the whole world at risk. I hope they are successful and so avoid WW3. You might not want to live but I do.
I wish we could all fight over this issue, like in a conventional war. I think this is a suitable hill on which to die. It really comes down to a lot of people being tricked by propaganda, believing Russia to be some evil nation, that Putin is Satan, and that Trump is Manchurian candidate Hitler controlled by Putin. By now, I believe, everyone can see the falseness of those beliefs. But they won't, no matter how many people die, admit they are wrong and that they were fooled and that they are gullible and venal.
At this point this is really what the war is about. It's about the gambit of those who pretended to be fooled by the fairy tales about Russian aggression, that gambit failing and those who believed it refusing to admit that there ever was a gambit. This war is over whether the establishment is going to drop their BIG LIE, submitting to observable reality and that they were wrong to the tune of a million dead bodies as well as their own idiocy and corruptibility.
