POG PUB 2024: A New Year, A New Thread, A New You
It was an honor to spend 2o23 with yall. And I look forward to spending 2o24 here too.
Happy New Year!
Hot mustard is different than hot mustard I think.
Carl's Jr Famous Star cheeseburger.
(Yes, I had a deal :p)
They are also still playing Christmas music. Kind of late, kind of nice.
Things have been going well. I got a surprisingly solid boost to my career this past year, and started up guiding/mentoring rock climbing again. In a much more stable housing environment. My partner has finally come around to getting treatment for Borderline, which has been a struggle as I try to work through some mental health issues myself, but ultimately progress is being made and we both have each other's support, so I'm optimistic there.
How about yourself?
Oh, that’s all awesome! I especially like to hear you’re back into rock climbing bc you always seemed really happy and in your element when you used to post about that. And I’m excited to hear you and your partner are supporting each other through your mental health journeys. I’ve been on one of my own for the past 7 years or so. That stuff is HARD and takes so much honest personal reflection. Proud of you for taking those steps. ♥
For me, well… My baby is now 3. She’s the center of my whole world, my life, my heart. I waited a long time to work on myself before becoming a mother, and I don’t mean this as a brag, more of like.. a dream come to fruition- I’m really good at being a mom. It’s maybe the thing I’ve ever been best at. It’s inspired so many huge changes in myself, and my outlook on life and the way I view others and treat others and how I show up in life.
Besides that, I’ve gotten back into classical music pretty significantly. I managed to get into my city’s fairly competitive professional symphony while I was pregnant and I’ve continued pursuing performance. We moved and now I’m performing with my new city’s opera company. It’s been more fulfilling than I thought it would be. AND the baby somehow remembers the music we were performing when she was in utero. Beethoven’s 9th is one of her favorite pieces of music lol
I could go on but it would just be about her and I know how annoying it can be to hear parents wax poetic about their own children but… for real I love her more than my own life. It’s been a massive shift in who I am as a person, and I think for the better.
a parental epiphany i had that i think is valuable and insightful... i got this taking care of my niece.
so i was thinking about how i should react, and how i would feel when she fails hard at something. and i was filled with love and caring. there was no judgment. no shame, just support and love and care, and even pride in the attempt! and hope that would be more attempts! failure is expected and necessary!
so my epiphany... what if i gave MYSELF that kind of reaction when I fail at something?!?!?
cuz when i fail, i feel such awful shame. i'm stupid. i'm worthless. i don't deserve to live etc lol
I watched the 20 year old movie "The Core" last night. A pretty entertaining action/Adventure movie! With that said, it broke more laws of Physics than Star Trek which has matter transporters, warp drive and phasers.
i love the core!!! hilary swank and that other guy.. stanley tucci? soooo good! and it's such stupid, fun movie lol
i watched that movie multiple times
me and mark could go to the movies together, then go to outback steakhouse after, then fight on opposite sides of the revolution
btw....
it annoys tf out of me when people say "literally", and they don't mean anything close to literally. it's destroying the word! it's confusing communication. it's weakening language!
but really it's just the world changing, and leaving me behind :(
it also makes me hate myself for being so annoyed at something so trivial

Go to a better steakhouse, at least. I'll pay!
I could care less

It would make a great party movie. Even with all the bad science and non-existent plot points, the movie manages to tell an engaging story.
And yes, I could easily hang with you. I was talking to my family about you ordering 40 nuggets. That is an insane amount of food. We said 20 is doable but 40... idk. lol
Also my daughter is a relatively liberal democrat. She may join your side of the revolution. 😀
Filthy is the most liberal Democrat I know
Filthy’s no democrat, how dare you?! Democrats are racist, capitalist, genocidal scum!

It upsets me, too, but I am scientifically minded. I can sort of calm down by thinking about the fact that "silly" started out meaning "blessed". The meaning slowly and logically changed over time to its current meaning. Of course, the change in "literally" is not really logical, but it is in line with our language patterns and evolution.

i can't order delivery cuz it's too stressful. but there is papa john's 3 or 4 blocks away, so i order pick up from there sometimes.
i was ordering the extra large garden fresh. lots of veggie toppings, and it's like 25 bucks. but i saw a sign on their window that said "carry out special 10.99 for large one topping pizza" so that is a way better deal. so today i ordered 4 of those, and the guy was like "would you like to make them extra large for 2 dollars more?" and i was like "hell ****ing yeah i would mother****er!"
so i got 4 extra large pizzas(for myself), for the same price i was paying for 2!
i won't eat them all at once though. im not that ****ing fat! i'll eat them over a couple days
right on!! couldn't have said it better myself

noam chomsky, who knows a lot about language, and specifically old man scholarly official langauge lol... he says that real language is just whatever people say to communicate to each other. like that matters way more than whatever a dictionary says.
just like what you were saying with "silly". words mean whatever people think they mean. we used to think literally meant one thing, and the dictionary says that same one thing, but the real meaning is now something else. times change. language changes.
the world will eventually leave us behind :(

semantic drift..
One example that always comes to mind is spectacular. A few years ago a TV station was reporting on a "spectacular accident." I found it odd. It does fit with past/traditional usage of spectacular, but nowadays spectacular usually refers to "good" events.
I find that print and TV journalists tend to hang on to words that have had their meaning drift much longer than the general public do. Makes sense in a way that they would be the holdouts. Stuffy tradition of correctness and all...lol
A perfectly cromulent usage
Oddly I feel like spectacle tends to refer to something bizarre.
There was a post about loading dishwasher today. Not surprisingly I tend toward chaotic neutral. So long as everything is facing downish and vaguely fits run it.
it's probably been 20 years since i used a dishwasher, and i've had one in my house over 15 of those years
