1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

Up $4,519, AA all in pre, AJT53ds all in pre at crazy table, game was still good but it was getting late.

Br challenge: $11,732 left. Getting close now!

Date was fine.

You deserve better than fine!

May 3 is looking good 😀

Thank you, let's just say he was quite photogenenic. But he still has a really nice smile. Also strangely likes darkness indoors/dislikes natural light? We were a mismatch on a lot of interests too. And he's out of shape. Oh well.

Getting close to the "single digits" in the challenge just a few weeks in, feel like this was a good idea for my motivation. You never know, the games have been unusually good lately, it could be even sooner than May 3!

coffee, music, a bit overcast today but bright enough to help me wake up, good sleep, not too much either. Feels like a good day in the making!

This is a deal breaker: Also strangely likes darkness indoors/dislikes natural light?

Of course, the fact that my husband doesn't like mustard was almost a deal breaker for me 😉 Glad I let it slide.

Glad the games have been good. Stick to May 3!

Got sorta beat up early on today at plo, lost top set flush blockers to wrap flush draw. Lost top pair and overs to a wrap no pair, and lost AA in a 3! pot to a rundown. Went for thin value on the river and he tank called me with a boatÂ…. Left for hold em and soon the 20/40 mix to get some reps in and enjoy poker a little.

Made a good comeback in the mixed game of all places, up $800, winning AA992 in big o all in pre and made nut nut for the scoop, jamming a pat 87 in single draw and holding, and a pat j dugi holding in badugi. Also made an 86 in triple draw outdrawing an 87. Back at plo now in the must move where the games got better (games were mediocre earlier).

Game selection is crucial…! Just got paid off on Q4353 by 44 with QQ.

Some runbad with AAs all in pre today in the second plo session, including a big one, getting bluffed a couple times too in pretty close spots didn’t help. Game has slowed down now will probably call it a night soon about even.

Lost $162 when all was said and done on the session, not bad at all given how poorly I ran in the bigger plo pots, e.g., raise, 3!, 4!, we 5!/get it in for heaps multiway with AAK65ds as the only one with AA and lose all the pots even the side pot I had against JJ987.

Br challenge: $11,894 to go.

Firery start to the session today, winning KKQJ8ds all in pre, losing TT877ds all in pre, winning dsAA all in pre and winning T88 on T86 to 86 on T8662. Family movie night then more playing later tonight. Up around $2k today.

Movie night was fun, the birdcage, great throwback comedy highly recommended. Putting in a few more hours tonight before calling it an honest day’s work. I ran into some government working friends from back in the day, great guys, and they were talking about how they really don’t work more than a few hours a day max, and I realized I am actually working harder than them on the felt…! Poker is not easy. At least it doesn’t feel like work to me.

Won nut wrap double bdfd to a set and a low wrap against my buddies of all people, then action player accidentally punted to me with air (gutshot plus overs, announced "nuts" and quickly tabled his hand when we were all in) on 996 when I had 96 for around $800, I gave him a $10 discount because he clearly misread his and/or the board. Ended up $3067 in 6 hours yesterday.

Got invited to play in 50/100 $5k buy in but I told the organizer thank you but I better not due to br issues due to a recent expense.

Bankroll challenge: $8827 to go of $50k. Getting there pretty damn fast! It's looking pretty good for whoever guessed April 20 right now.

Good rest, didn't overdo it last session, just 6-7 hours of play this time, a little less than my usual, games were still decent but I need balance so I don't burn out and I was already up enough anyway and starting to get tired, plus I wanted to try to wake up at a reasonable hour. Lattes today, exercise, then Friday fun begins! Gonna be a good day, I am feeling it.

Go, go, go!

What family is involved in movie night? (If that's too personal, feel free to ignore!) Sounds like fun -- I remember really liking that movie, but it's been years.

Thanks! Doing well today so far, hopped in the big o while waiting for plo. My parents, sister, and the three doggies. I don’t have a significant other or kids of my own, not really surprising since it’s harder for people like me in general to have a family. Relationships are also trickier when playing poker for a living.

The big girl was groggy from tooth removal and anesthesia at the vet earlier in the day, the poor thing.

Strong start after winning a little at big o, winning AA gutter nfd to two pair in 3! pot and winning AQJ75 against second nut sttaight on KJT for a nice pot. Helps to get paid more often when we bluff sometimes too. Up around $2300 now and I still haven’t gotten a seat in the big game which looks incredibly juicy tonight. I could close out the challenge today if it goes well.

Up $4,375, won top set at the end against colluder husband and got to hit and run on him just like his wife did to me last week…hehe. To be fair I announced it was my last hand before it was even dealt. Too tired to play the big game by the time a seat opened up.

Br challenge: $4452 to go.

What was I thinking with July? Just didn’t want pressure you I guess lmao

WP OP, homestretch

Excellent. Right on track for May 3! You can even take a few days off 😉

Someone moving from NLH to PLO, would you recommend PLO5 instead? Also what is your book like, could you give some sort of brief table of contents/overview?

Nice run you’re on

Thank you! You probably just didn’t understand how much I enjoy PLO5! I’ve come a long way from where I started a few years ago with this game and it only seems to get better.

No promises! I’m very motivated to wrap this up in record time now. Less than a month would be sweet. 😀

Yes to PLO5 if you can find it. It’s less explored and still relatively new so the fields are softer.

The guide is around 11 pages long. It covers preflop starting hand selection, how to play certain hands like aces and kings, how to play different categories of made hands (sets trips etc.) draws, handy general postflop principles, and good bluff candidates.

Thanks! I’m even beating my own prediction somehow. It’s been a hot run for a while now. Counting my blessings.

The guide is very good.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. 😀

April 20th I really wanna plo5 for free lol. So make sure to win on that day.

Up $1,100 so far today, day is early…will you guess exactly right..?! We’ll see.

Just made a great play I’m a little happy about, there’s an open and a call and btn 3!, we cold call sb A6655ds, four ways to J34 both our bdfd, checks to short stack who jams $215 into $280, btn calls, we jam $1200 and get other deep stacks to fold, we scoop against a pair of 3s and a wrap on 8J runout…!
