1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

1/3 Grinding and Bankroll

Hi all,

First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.

I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.

I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?

I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.

Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks,
DT

I lost a couple KKs pre, but ran well elsewhere and booked a tidy $2.4k profit on the first session of the new month. Two short stacks at our table kept min buying and punting, it was a sight to see. They both hit a gutter on me once, one time a 2-outter when I had top set and two of his 7s and the other time with a 2-outter when I had nfd and two pair and he hit one of the only off-suit Qs left What donks!

I hope they come back or are regulars -- they can't get lucky every time. I play against guys like this. I won $5,500 Friday night at 1/2/5 PLO because the short-stacker donks kept buying back in, running it up, and giving it to me. Unfortunately, my husband lost $3,500. LOL. He kept feeding them and I kept winning it back 😉 (Only had one decent pot against my husband all night for a few hundred.)

Lost early on, getting a bluff called and losing a dsAA all in pre, also losing a 4! pot with nut straight to AA nfd all in flop. Got stacked with dsAA to maniac and I topped off and colluder husband said I was over the table max by $5 and forced me to take it off. This was after he asked me if I took my crazy meds and said I was psychotic for calling him out for an angle. Bleh. Made a come back at better game winning top set JJT97ds in 3! pot to bottom set on J82r. Running it back.

Still trucking an overnight session to reset my sleep schedule so I can attend a family event (Greek Easter) on Sunday. Running well flopping top two back door nut flush draw rivered the nut flush. DsAA held, got cracked a couple times too. All in all doing very well.

Ran meh at 1/2 plo but running hot at 10/10 winning dsAAQ56 three ways pre and AKJT8ds in 3! pot too flopping top two nut gutter spr 1.5. 😀

Wrapped up the long 10/10 session strong, playing all through the night into the next afternoon to reset my schedule, was pretty card dead for a while, got AAT98ss and flatted a 3! for deception super deep once since a 4! would put me in awkward territory spr wise, made some sets and held, got one bluff through A9993 on K567, raised turn, blasted river V folded. Got another one called by a hold 'em player (of course), KK on Q9J, blasted turn and river and he called with T8. Bleh. He later folded quads to quads so I was super perplexed by his call against me. Lost a lot in the bomb pots, lots of second best (only play the nuts!), biggest was AJ on AJ66A to 66. Anyway always good to book a nice juicy win in a big game.

Anyone seeking high-quality plo5 coaching from a top player, please check out my coaching thread. $75/hour, and with the first session you get my plo5 guide for free otherwise $20 by itself. Still at a steep discount from my hourly!

Starting my morning session well, winning AKQQ9 in 3! Pot with top pair overpair and nfd and drawing out on top set. Lost JT986ss all in pre to dsAA multi-way, flopped nut wrap oesfd and pair and bricked. Grinding it back.

Had Greek Easter, good food and family/friends time, then played an evening session and won again, K9876ds won three ways 862 flop, top set lost one time but won another, wrapped it up on another solid W on the day. Almost played 10/10 at the end but I was really tired after an early wake up and the guy everyone was waiting for to play was late in showing up. At least I got to see some of the the guys do $4k flips while I waited.

Good sleep after booking another solid W over two sessions, glad I did not play another couple hours of 10/10 after waiting for the action to get back from dinner, would have overdone it and been bad for my schedule. Morning routine going well....lattes, beautiful light, poker night in america re-reuns, music, then another day at the tables. Life is good! It's cloudy but bright, I feel another good day in the making.

I'm honestly starting to wonder how much of my run good this year is playing better versus running better...probably a combination, but moreso playing better. I am taking higher variance pre and postflop lines a lot more.

Probably playing better for sure.

Mid session update - started rocky but then won an AA pre, QJT97ds flopped top pair nut wrap back door flush draw and got there, then mid set wheel wrap back door flush draw got there against allegedly top set. Took a break to relax and eat dinner and back at it winning well.

Can you re-read what you posted there, and get to the same result?
I mean, taking higher variance lines preflop in games with very close equities can absolutely be correct, but the 3.5% edge after rake will hardly confirm that its your improved decision-making that earns the big incoming dollars, in my drunken opinion...

Insanely swingy session, was up $3k then down $1.5k after a naked A bluff didn't work against two pair plus 2nd nuts, the won T9872ds versus two AAs, then up $4k after an insane hand where I 4! AAKJ5 to $600 and flop T88r and shoved $1,300 eff., he had KK87x and 9, T runout gave mt the nut straight runner runner, BUT even though I tabled my hand no one at the table saw it (or if they did, didn't speak up), thankfully as soon as the hand was over I realized I had it (or was 95% sure) and asked the floor to go to surveillance and after some back an forth sure enough I had the winner. Not only that, but the dude with the 8 didn't clearly table all 5 cards. He had to pay me $1,500 and the casino made up the $2.4k difference. Then I won KQJT9 on T43J8, raised big ott. Finally ended up somewhere in between my session highs but didn't see a board pair at the end and cost me a few hundo. Utterly exhausted, way too long of a session, and I could tell my focus and play quality was deteriorating, but I felt pressured to play longer after that surveillance debacle and felt pretty bad for the dude who had to pay it back, especially since we play together a lot and he's a really nice guy.

I'm surprised they went to surveillance after the hands were mucked. I had no idea they would do that. Lucky for you they did.

Yeah very lucky. The floor sorta screwed up the explanation to the fun player …first said I had a flush when there was no flush possible…so they negotiated down the amount he owed.

Ran bad at 10/10 plo losing a dsAA and folding a couple winners pre, but jumped in a good looking 10/25 hold em game and got a triple up with AA to get unstuck and in good profit territory! Blind $200, I $600, cold $2,000 and I got to ship three ways $2,7k and held.

Wonderful start to the day, very good pre session routine and plenty of sleep. Playing the mix for a while until plo opens up again later.running good so far making hands.

Sorta getting my butt handed to me at plo so far today, straights not holding against top pair and sets not holding against gutshots. Got bottom set nut gutter and back door nut flush draw in three ways in a 3! pot too. It was a close spot but I was about getting right odds if behind. AA getting out- flopped too. On track for best month ever again judging by early in month results so it’s going to be fine regardless. I’m relaxed even though I’m stuck. Zen.

Made a come back, won an AA three ways, made a straight flush against nut flush plus big boat, then game went south and played 5/T/25 where I got AQs all in pre against a maniac and got there, then won ATs against him too on A4TAQ. The maniac was spewing and wanted to bump it up and play stand up game, but I was getting tired and quit a good game booking a solid win.

In the mix, held with a pat 8 dugi in badeucy, lost in big o with AKJ72ds, and made a J6 in triple draw with 6432 pipping V who made a J8.

Got a good start to the day, sat at a 2/5 open seat with no list and players gave me a hard time, I immediately confirmed with floor I could sit down, then floor came back and said they made a mistake and there were transfers to that game and I had to get up. Player said he didn’t want me there because I was pro. lol. Dealer told me to leave too…!

Other game lost AKo to QQ sb v straddle 60bb eff.and got a little angled dude pretended to fold pre so I almost mucked, then he jammed..lol never folding anyway.

Now at plo thank goodness. No limit is an awful dying game with thin edges anyway.

Going well today, lost some at 1/2 plo with 9-high rundown …gambled …thought I was playing low with a lot of high cards…but unfortuantely it didn’t work out. Then won a bunch at 10/10, AATT5 held pre $2,500 and AKQ98ds too, lost nut straight flush draw to straight two pair on both run outs was the only suck out.

Good start to day. A little earlier than expected, a couple bluffs called so far and not much action. Sushi break then hopefully a transfer to a better game.

Sushi makes everything better!

Sorta a blur of getting it all in and losing, was close to my biggest loss of the day ever. Trying to play as long as this action player is in the game but it’s getting very late and I’m tired. Won AKTT8 on my flush draw flop with open ender and scooped. Otherwise ran pretty bad and my action forcing hands pre didn’t fare well.

Sorry to hear. I had a bad poker night, too. Couldn't win a hand against the worst PLO players on the planet -- must have been the aurora borealis, which I somehow missed.
