1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll management.
I started playing 4-5 times a week at MGM National Harbor in March after a few months off. Previously I had been playing at MD Live and lost most of what I had won (around $1,200). Anyway, I took $200 to the casino and tried my luck. No bankroll to start really.
I had a great March (+$3,000) but a terrible April (-$3,000) after trying 2/5 and losing $1k and a horrific 24-hour session where I dumped $1,800 in just cooler after cooler (set over set, AK into AA, nut flush v. boat, etc.). This month I'm up around $1,000 so far. Any tips about bankroll management that can keep me from losing it all again? Do you set some of your winnings aside for example?
I have a somewhat steady income outside of poker but my goal is to make poker a supplement to that income and not just a break-even hobby.
Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks,
DT
$86,450 to go, booked a small win but I’ll take it.
Woke up while the sun was still out which is always nice, wrote some concluding remarks for the strategy guide per a friend's advice (thanks!), lattes and music now. Keeping perspective I am doing very well, just shy of an $18k month despite the runbad...it will be ok.
Lost KK to 66 all in pre at 5/T $1,500 pre no straddle I 3! he 4! jammed he flopped a 6 on both run outs…lol. Dinner break now as he snap quit on me after this hand. It’ll be ok, I win some at plo and the mix at least, more plo to follow. Channeling my inner peace.
Not much, plo broke and then played a slow 2/5 session in a bad game not getting paid and whiffing, -$1,500 day thanks to hold 'em, won at plo. br: $88,370 to go.
It's a new day, edited the guide a bit more, enjoying lattes and music, exercising, going to hit the felt soon. Feel energized and positive and ready to crush!!!
Tank full of gas, gallon of milk in the fridge, full stock of latte capsules, what more can a guy ask for?
Up $1,500 at 10/10 so far, taking a dinner break and will revise the guide further, going on 20 pages now. Feel like it’s in really good shape now. AA holding mostly helps.
$2,800 day, needed that. $85,570 to go. Guide is in amazing shape.
Woke up and was pleasantly surprised to see a positive review of my revised guide from Bobby Peru (thanks!) in my coaching thread. Really nice way to start the day. Proud of my hard work to get the guidebook into even better shape than it was previously, added a lot of my thoughts and equities.
Woke up after a good night's sleep, changed my latte habit to Americano blend now, I add a little water to the milk and espresso, helps the digestion and hydration a little. Feels like another good day in the making...!
Starting pretty good today, game is above average which always helps. Game just got a lot better and is well above average now. Happy dumbo…surrounded by four action players…I’m in poker heaven.
Ran very badly in my all ins, top set lost to backdoor wrap (lol), two AA lost to action V in 4! pots, ran AKKT9ds into other action's AA. - $2,600. 87,170 to go. A little break even stretch.
Losing a lot of all ins as a big favorite this month but keeping my composure, happy about my mental game. Sent the guide to a couple winning pro friends and they approved. Really nice to have my peers' stamp of approval. Nuts, lattericanos, and music now after solid sleep, woke up late but it's ok, I needed the rest after a bruising session. The 10/10 game organizer is right, I am tough. Bad reg who told me to kill myself twice won with backdoor wrap to my top set and said he killed me, I ignored him and just laughed inside about how bad he is at poker.
Very slow session, in a good 5/T with 100% VPIP VIP, stuck some but game is good so I am still playing. Sold another PLO5 strat guidebook at least.
Plan for the rest of the day is keep playing disciplined and let the game come to me (been folding an awful lot), go for a walk outside in the sun, get chipotle, eat and get a good sleep in. Wake up late and reset my schedule again. And hopefully make some money too. But no biggie if that doesn’t work out. It’s one long session.
I was card dead all night in the big hold 'em game (opens were to $200) until the very end iso'd KTo and A5o against 100% VPIP VIP and stacked her on 8884A with the last hand and crai turn naked Kh on AJ43hhh and she folded after raising my flop bet. Played a little PLO got it in three ways nut straight plus fd and made my flush and called it a session up a couple grand. $85,070 or so to go.
Had a vivid dream an arsonist was being chased in his car from the scene of the crime by the cops and was finally apprehended and he tried to flee through his window but they took him down in the snow. Wow.
Solid sleep, went for a walk in the sun for chipotle in the AM before bed so I got good vitamin D and sun, gonna be a good night! It's been rough but I am holding my own.

I'm a big fan of keeping one's composure, especially when being pelted by negative variance. Easier said than done, of course. Aside from healthy life-habits (e,g, sleep, exercise and nutrition) what's been the most significant factor in your improvement? I'll admit that I still lose my composure way more often than I should at the table.

Being over-rolled for the game, but even then sometimes I get upset at losing a 90/10. Being full time now I try to be a little more aware of my table image and act "professionally."
Won $4k at 10/10, some AAs held, lost at 5/5, went ape with AKJ22ds in a squeeze spot and got scooped by AQT92. Break now, more poker soon. Sold three guides today, a record!
After discussing with my pro poker friends they said the guide was too cheap for the content and quality so I’m increasing the price to $50.
Lost AKs to TT on KT3K runout in 4! pot at 5/T, chopped AA to KQs in 4! jam all in pre spot, doubled another AA pre, then left for plo where got AQJT6ds all in spr low J93 both my bdfd to JJ and 99 and bricked. Grinding it back before some rest.
Ended up $2,200, $82,870 to go. Zzz...
Woke up late in the process of resetting my sleep schedule again, hopefully the Saturday early morning games will be good, Saturdays have been hit or miss. Lattericanos music, got plenty of SLEEP, gonna do some light exercise and relaxing stretches before heading out for a session.
Someone messaged me on discord about how helpful the guide has been to him winning in his games, super!

Starting very rocky, lost AA nfd double gutter ott to slowplayed set, then got it in ott with nut straight three ways with two pair redraw and lost to flush redraw. Day is young.
$81,270 to go, ran it up towards the end KK flopped top set in 3! pot and held versus draw was the biggest one. Exhausted. Sleep!
Woke up early after plenty of sleep, apparently there is a 50/100 5-card running right now, will see if I make it on time before the game breaks. could be what I need to finish the month strong if I can get a seat.
Made a quick $700 at plo, checking the nuts twice paid off, got it from worst straight on river…big game had already broke by the time I arrived, playing 1/3 with trans VIP now, enjoying her antics. “I have a $30,000 pussy.”
