The Aran Islands, that's out of the way. Nice one. They speak Irish there, right?

Drunken Irish. Of course, there really isn’t any other kind.

I loved going to Inis Mor, one of the Aran islands. I wanted to go there for a long time after seeing Flaherty's Man of Aran. We took the ferry to the island, about 45 minutes. The weather was dreadful with soaking rain and strong winds, but that seemed about right.

We hopped on a tour bus as soon as we got off the ferry because there's no other way to get to the ruins of an ancient fort at the end of the island. Bus dropped us off for about a half hour uphill walk to the fort atop the cliff. Most of the road is gravel except for the last 500 yards or so that is all stone. It's not a staircase, just stone. The walk back down was treacherous with the slippery rocks and strong winds.

By the time we were done, I was completely soaked through a windbreaker, a fleece jacket, a swearer, and t-shirt. Even the T-shirt was wet.

The sun finally came out by the time the tour bus got us back to town. Stopped at The Bar (yes, that's its name) for a couple Irish coffees.

I think this was my favorite day in Ireland. The weather was beautiful the rest of the time, but it was great to get out to that island on a day of real Irish weather.

So I''m visiting my Mother today and (as always) she watching some Hallmark channel concoction. I think this one is a Hallmark Mystery channel movie. Anyway Edd Burnes is in it (aka Kookie) although a much older Kookie. I couldn't help but think of this song.

About 10 years ago I went to one of those oldie TV rerun channels and recorded all of 77 Sunset Strip and watched them all. First time I has seen it since first run when I was a kid. Thing I remember most was that Ephraim Zimbalist Jr. would smoke 10-15 cigarettes per episode. Different time. Frenchie was hot and Kookie was cool!

Happy Friday! Drink 'em if you got 'em 😀

find it delicious to see john weathered a full irish not including breakfast with blood pudding pucks
although very enjoyable when properly done

I ate the full Irish breakfast, including the blood pudding. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't necessarily good either.

Already planning a golf trip next year to Scotland.

If I should learn, in some quite casual way,
That you were gone, not to return again—
Read from the back-page of a paper, say,
Held by a neighbor in a subway train,
How at the corner of this avenue
And such a street (so are the papers filled)
A hurrying man, who happened to be you,
At noon today had happened to be killed—
I should not cry aloud—
I could not cry
Aloud, or wring my hands in such a place—
I should but watch the station lights rush by
With a more careful interest on my face;
Or raise my eyes and read with greater care
Where to store furs and how to treat the hair.

.

how long are you thinking about going?
play every day or skip some days?
i assume you're up for the walk because carts aren't really a thing.
any particular part of Scotland you'd like to visit?

Skip some days. Okay with walking if necessary. Not sure which part of Scotland, but might also opt for Ireland. It's a long way off, but we are going to make plans soon.

Cost isn't that much a consideration.

Listening to BBC TV and just heard the recap of a cricket match. Did not understand a word of it. Well, I understood the words, but that was it.

wild guess at a number of rounds, total trip length?
have you been to Scotland before, or want to mix in other sights?
also suggest Coyne's A Course Called Scotland

two suggestions to start
for your first home base either head toward North Berwick (just east of Edinburgh) or Prestwick (southwest of Glasgow)
in either location you can play an Old Tom Morris links course, which should be the goal of the trip

Never been to Scotland, and I'd also want to go to the town where Local Hero was filmed and see other stuff. Probably thinking of four or five rounds.

Years ago I read Bernard Darwin's Golf Courses of the British Isles, my favorite golf book that made me want to play some courses in Britain.

Darwin was the grandson of Charles Darwin, and he also edited The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. He ended his introduction with a reference to the man who kicked old Buddha's gong (and if you get that reference without looking it up, I'll Venmo you ten bucks).

Local Hero was filmed way up in Aberdeenshire
if that destination is a confirmed goal, there are several old tom courses to choose from

and there's no way if you're up in that direction you should not head towards peterhead and cruden bay and also visit new slains castle
an experience provided to you by old tom morris and bram stoker

If I remember correctly, the beach and the phone booth in Local Hero are not in the same town.

Cricket is easy. It's rugby that is incomprehensible.

This might confuse those who haven't read the music thread, so hop over there to read about the Janis Joplin tribute band.

Dom's birthday today, guys.

I remember that he won a seniors event a couple of decades ago so maybe we shouldn't go near this.
