Trump 2nd term prediction thread
So, looks like Trump not only smashed the electoral college, but is looking on track to win the popular vote, which seems to be an unexpected turn of events, but a clear sign of the current temperature in the country and perhaps the wider world.
Would be interested to hear views on how his 2nd term will pan out from both sides of the aisle - major happenings, what he's going to get done, what he's not going to get done, the impact of his election on the current conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, whether his popularity will remain the same, wane, or increase, etc.
A bit of an anemic OP, I know, just interested to hear people's thoughts now that the election uncertainty is over.
New prediction: Trump will rug Ross Ulbrecht by tying him to the Jan 6 'hostages' release somehow, causing months/years of delays.
Really want to be wrong on this one and he Day-1's it.
I did meet some older Americans who were single issue abortion voters, in the sense that they always looked first at that to vote (that was when both democrats and republicans had both pro choice and pro life options sometimes), above everything else all the times, at least according to them.
And they would not vote for a position if both candidates were pro choice and only look at the rest of the candidates were both pro life.
I'm won't vote for pro-choice candidates but also won't necessarily vote for pro-life ones.
I voted on keeping Trump out of power. No other issue is/was even close to being of equal importance. Someone as damaged as Trump should never have power. I likely will not vote in the future. (I’m an educated white male, so I’ll likely be just fine.)
Nomination now official.
Here's yet another reason we shouldn't be pausing research like our idiotic new administration wants to.

Basically 6% of the isolates of extremely virulent kleb pneumonia from Ukraine are 100% anti-body resistant.
Not the time to be halting antibody research. If a better antibody isn't found at some point soon, this is extremely concerning.

Who's proposing to stop research on antibodies?
“I’m gonna say to NIH scientists, God bless you all,” Mr Kennedy said, NBC News reported. “Thank you for public service. We’re going to give infectious disease a break for about eight years.”
Not even the worst thing in that article.
"He added that he would use the power of the Department of Justice to threaten medical journals to publish retracted studies."

That's anti-vaccinism not anti-antibiotics (as far as i can tell).
Luckly anyway, the NIH got one of the best actual experts in the world (the very rare person who is both an expert in healthcare and in healthcare economics) nominated (and he shouldn't have any problems getting the senate to confirm) at his helm and not the crazy RFK.
HHS can interfere somewhat but at the end it's congress approving NIH budget (and research allocations and whatnot).
So you should be happy about this nomination if you want useful, very cost effective base research (like antibiotic research) funded by taxpayers money in the USA
It's funny because you lamented a purported risk for antibiotic resistance being forgotten by this administration, in response to the nomination of a person who... actually studied antibiotic resistance for a decade lol.

What's funny is the mental gymnastics you attempt in order to avoid that RFK says he wants to pause research into infectious diseases at the worst possible time to do so.
And a casual reminder that RFK has zero medical qualifications.
How many unauthorized immigrants Donald Trump hopes to remove from the country: 11 million people in all.
It won’t be easy. How will the government find all of these people?
Where will they be held as officials process their cases?
Will migrants’ home countries take them back?
And will lawmakers approve all the funding required for this?
He wants to use the military and law enforcement to detain
the millions of people who are in the United States illegally.
The government will hold them in detention facilities while it inspects the facts of each case.
Finally, it will fly undocumented migrants to their home countries or other places that agree to take them.
Trump also wants to deport undocumented migrants with clean records
(aside from the blemish of breaking the law to enter the United States).
And he has said he’ll go after people with Temporary Protected Status.
Undocumented migrants have due process rights, so their cases typically have to work through the courts.
But immigration courts have years long backlogs. Trump officials want to
use arcane laws, like the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, to bypass this process.
Right now, officials don’t have anywhere to put tens of
thousands more migrants, let alone hundreds of thousands.
The government will have to build, buy or lease more detention centers.
Will other nations cooperate?
the plan is expensive enough that Congress will likely have to approve more
spending for it, and a bill might require Democratic support to pass the Senate
A goal of mass deportations is to create a climate of fear
among migrants, leading some to leave America on their own.
Trump and his allies say their plan will revitalize the economy and prioritize the rule of law.

Critics say that mass deportations will cause chaos in Latino communities, as well as labor
shortages in industries like agriculture, food processing and construction, leading to higher prices.

Here is an idea lets start with the 1.1 million that have had their asylum claims judicated and they have been ordered to leave the country as well as anyone that has a criminal record or committed a crime
Will Trump even come close to Deporting over 5.5 million like Obama did that will be a challenge . Funny how democrat's never refused to cooperate with him

Why would it be a challenge? Obama's administration deported about half the number of each of the two previous administrations. He did this by focusing on deporting them as they arrived or committed crimes, rather than hunting down people who have been living and working here for years.
I think the only reason it would be difficult for Trump to reach that number would be sheer incompetence (don't forget, you're comparing to 8 years and this isn't year 1 for Trump). It's, again, the main hope sane people have for the next 4 years.

The challenge lies in the fact that two of the largest states will not cooperate with Trump's administration . I agree lets get the ones working issued temporary work visa's and collect taxes
Texas creating an entire generation of unemployable people.

Why not you? You going to try to give me an example of the supreme court ignoring the constitution? If they were to do so on this topic, it would lead to massive disobedience and protests. I don't think they will here. Of course they *can* so maybe I shouldn't have used that word. I just don't think they will.
But it's obvious what decision is correct to most of us, I'm sure you'll agree.

I would argue Dobbs ignored the Constitution. Although really it ignored state decisis that a fundamental right of privacy exists in the constitution. I would also argue citizens United ignored the Constitution when claiming a corporation has the same first amendment rights as real people. Again, I think they really just ignored the concept of the individual having the rights found in our bill of rights, not fictious persons. Bush v Gore, they ignored all normal process.
